1 Remediation Clarifications Transcript Title Slide (no narration) Webcast Focus This webcast contains scenarios about the online examinations during the initial training of students when remediation is required. The scenarios in the webcast review when: Remediation is not required, Remediation is required, And, when the specific type of remediation is at the trainer s discretion. Also included in the webcast are a couple of tips about transferring student testing scores from the online student course to the Summary and Certification Form for Initial Training. As stated in the Student Training, Testing, and Monitoring webcast, in order for a student to become certified to administer medication, the student must earn 90 points or more on the testing components and successfully complete four medication administration observations. The multiple choice and written documentation exams are completed by students independently online. As portions of the testing and requirements to become certified to administer medication are not completed online, there is not a total score that is calculated in the online student course like there was when you completed the online portion of the Trainer course. The scenarios in this webcast are going to focus on when remediation is required for the multiple choice and written documentation examinations. Examinations We ll begin by reviewing the criteria stated in the Student Training, Testing, and Monitoring webcast about when remediation must occur. The multiple choice exam is worth 50 points. If a student earns less than 40 points, meaning they missed more than 10 points, remediation must occur prior to retesting. Remediation for those students is to review the material that relates to the missed questions prior to retesting. There is a report that you are able to view by student that indicates which lessons questions were missed from so that you can determine which lessons the student needs to review. The directions for accessing this report are reviewed in the Accessing the Student Course webcast which can be accessed by certified trainers in Trainer Resources. 1

2 The written documentation exam is worth a total of 40 points. If a student earns less than 30 points on the written documentation exam, meaning they missed more than 10 points, remediation must occur prior to retesting. Remediation for those students is to review online Lessons 5, 7, and 8 about recording, administering, and documenting prior to retesting. The trainer may want to repeat portions of the classroom presentation and/or provide additional practice activities related to documentation for the student. Additional practice activities can be found in the Trainer Manual and the online Trainer Resources. Transferring Scores The actual score earned on the multiple choice or written documentation exams are transferred to the Summary and Certification Form for Initial Training. This form documents the student s completion of the requirements to become certified to administer medication. When you view the result of the multiple choice exam in the student course, the result shows as a percent. This means that you need to convert the percent to a score to transfer it to the Summary and Certification Form. To convert the percent to a score, multiply the percent as a decimal times 50. For example, if the grade report shows 84%, take.84 times 50 for a score of 42. The result of the written documentation exam shows in multiple columns in the grade report of the student course. The first four columns show the percent earned on the corresponding part of the exam. The fifth column then is the final result of the entire documentation exam. It shows as an actual score that can be transferred to the Summary and Certification Form. There will only be one score, the total score, to transfer to the Summary and Certification Form for the written documentation exam. The handwashing and gloving skills are each worth 5 points for a total of 10 points. Students that have difficulty with handwashing or gloving procedures during the skill observation and fail either or both of these skills should be remediated as described in the Student Training, Testing, and Monitoring webcast. Remember, every student will need to successfully complete the handwashing and gloving skills in order to become certified to administer medication. This makes sense as these are essential skills needed to safely administer medication. When a student misses more than 10 points on the exam, it is clear that remediation is required as the student will not pass the course even if full points are earned on the other testing components. Keep in mind that not all students that fail to achieve 90 points will clearly fall into these remediation requirements. It is possible for students to miss 10 or less points on each exam and still not achieve the required 90 points to pass. Let s look at a couple examples that will demonstrate various remediation scenarios. Remediation Not Required 2

3 Here is a Summary and Certification Form for Initial Training for Jonas Smith. As you can see, he has earned 37 points on the written documentation test, 45 points on the multiple choice exam, and 10 points for handwashing and gloving. Is remediation required for Jonas? Correct! Jonas earned a total of 92 points which means he passed the online examinations and skill demonstrations. Keep in mind this does not mean he is certified to administer medication yet as he still needs to successfully complete four medication administration observations. That is incorrect. Remediation Required In this example for Alma Jones, she did well on the written documentation test with a score of 39, but missed over 10 points on the multiple choice test with a score of 35. Her total score then with the skills demonstration is 84. What is the required remediation for Alma? Correct! As Alma missed more than 10 points on the multiple choice test, Alma must review the lessons that she missed questions from and then take the multiple choice test again. That is incorrect. In this example, Pepper Ann King earned 29 points on the written documentation exam and 45 points on the multiple choice test. What is the required remediation for Pepper Ann? Correct! As Pepper Ann missed more than 10 points on the written documentation exam, Pepper Ann must review Lessons 5, 7, and 8 about recording, administering, and documenting prior to retesting. That is incorrect. Here you can see that Carlos earned 29 points on the written documentation exam and 39 points on the multiple choice test. What is the required remediation for Carlos? Correct! As Carlos missed more than 10 points on the written documentation exam and also more than 10 points on the multiple choice test, Carlos must review Lessons 5, 7, and 8 about recording, administering, and documenting prior to retesting. As the trainer, you would also want to see what other lessons questions were missed from that Carlos should also review. 3

As Carlos missed more than 10 points on the written documentation exam and also more than 10 points on the multiple choice test, Carlos must review Lessons 5, 7, and 8 about recording, administering and documenting prior to retesting. As the trainer, you would also want to see what other lessons that questions were missed from that Carlos should also review. Is Remediation Required? In this example, Chris Peachey earned 34 points on the written documentation test and 45 points on the multiple choice test. Is remediation required on the written documentation test if 34 points were earned? Is remediation required on the multiple choice test if 45 points were earned? Did Chris successfully complete the online examinations and skill demonstrations? Correct! As Chris did not earn 90 points or more on the online examinations and skill demonstrations, he has NOT successfully completed these components. That is incorrect. In this situation as Chris did not successfully complete these components, remediation should occur. You as the trainer should work with Chris to review the areas that Chris may not have full mastery of yet. It would make sense to have Chris review Lessons 5, 7, and 8 about recording, administering, and documenting as well as the lessons multiple choice questions were missed from prior to retesting. Summary To summarize then: The multiple choice and written documentation exams are completed by students independently online. If a student earns less than 40 points on the multiple choice exam, remediation must occur prior to retesting. The handwashing and gloving skills are each worth 5 points for a total of 10 points. If the student does not achieve 90 points or more on the online examinations and skills demonstrations, he or she has NOT successfully completed the testing component of the course and remediation is required prior to retesting. Remediation requirements for failed observations during initial training is addressed in the How to Conduct a Medication Administration Observation webcast. There is not a total score calculated in the online student course like there was when you completed the online portion of the Trainer course. The Summary and Certification Form for Initial Training documents the student s completion of the requirements to become certified to administer medication. There is not a separate certificate available online for students like there is for you as a trainer. If after remediation and retesting a student misses more than 10 points on either the multiple choice or written documentation exam or earns less than 90 points overall, the student must repeat the entire course again including online lessons and the classroom presentation. 4
