2 ARC Recommendation for Certification ARC candidates receive paperwork to begin the process for certification when all of the following ARC requirements are acceptable. 1. Core and Methods program assignments 2. Student practicum 3. Praxis II or ACTFL exams 4. Prerequisite coursework 5. Other requirements in accordance with program policies and state certification regulations. 2

4 Application for a Temporary 90-Day Certificate An ARC graduate can be hired in any Connecticut public school. The district applies for a Temporary 90-Day Certificate. The graduate must be hired for a permanent teaching position. A Temporary 90-Day Certificate can only be granted in a candidate s ARC area of study. Teaching positions can be for full or part-time employment but must be permanent. If part-time of at least.4 FTEs, then 90-days will be renewed to meet the number of days requirement. 4

5 When does the Temporary 90-Day Certificate go into effect? Dates are 90 days of contracted teaching days (not calendar days) must be provided in Part IV of the ED 172 application by the hiring district. If an application is submitted before the first day of employment, the certificate is effective on the first date of employment provided in the application. If an application is submitted after the first day of employment, the certificate is effective on the date the application is received and logged into the State Department of Education s certification system. 5

6 Required Application Materials for Certification There is currently no expiration date for your eligibility for a Temporary 90-Day Certificate. 1. Official College Transcripts 2. Praxis II or ACTFL Scores 3. The official ARC ED 125 Statement of Preparing Higher Education form. 4. A completed ED 172 application with an official hiring recommendation from a district superintendent or designee. 5. No fee is required for the Temporary 90-Day Certificate. 6. The 90-Day Certificate may be renewed. 6

7 Certification Questions The next series of slides are questions about Connecticut certification that you will work on based on your Table letter. We will go over the questions together, first, then you will use your devices to research the questions assigned to your table. A copy of the table questions will be given to each table. Each table should work collectively to research the question. A web link is noted to help you get started. Different members of each group can work on different questions. Share your finding with your group. Each table should determine a reporter whose job it will be to share the group findings with the large group. I will monitor the tables progress and call time at some point. 7

12 Job Interview Perspectives Job Interviews should be considered a two-way street. The interviewing principal/committee/district will want to get a sense that you are a good fit for the position. You will want to sense that the job is the right fit as well. Before the interview, spend some time researching the school and district website. Inquire about your teaching load. Mention edtpa completion or the need to participate in during the 90-day. Gather questions you would like answered at the interview. Recommended questions are Will I have a mentor to help me learn the culture and procedures of the school? How often will the mentor be available? 12

13 Certification Levels Step 1 for ARC Graduates Temporary 90-Day Certificate 1. Successful completion of ARC program 2. Hired by a public school for a permanent teaching position (see note on long term substitute positions) 3. Official recommendation from the hiring district Level 1 Initial Educator Certificate 1. Completion of 90 days of successful teaching and participation in edtpa for school year 2. Issued for up to 3 years Level 2 Provisional Certificate 1. Completion of TEAM Program 2. A minimum of 10 school months of teaching under the Initial Educator Certificate 3. Issued for up to 8 years Level 3 Professional Certificate 1. After July 2016, shall hold a Master s degree in an appropriate subject area, determined by SDE, related to such teacher s certification endorsement area. 2. A minimum of 30 school months of teaching under the Provisional Certificate 3. Renewed every 5 years with regulated SDE professional development 13

14 Initial Educator Certificate The recommendation for the Initial Educator Certificate must come from the same district that requested the Temporary 90- Day Certificate. The State will not remind you or contact your district for the application. Keep track of your application dates. 14

15 ARC Support After the completion of the ARC Program, ARC graduates are provided the following professional development services. 1. Instructional coaching when teaching, as requested or edtpa coaching for 4 one-half hour sessions for each part of the portfolio (Planning, Instruction and Assessment). These sessions would be after school hours and may be conference calls, s, Skype, or any other helpful communication method. 2. Continued access to the ARC Resource Library 3. Posting of Profiles on the ARC website 4. Access to job posting information 15
