11 Chapter 3: Roadmap This document is a road map for the Avaya Secure Router 2330/4134 documentation. Use this document to find the correct document for the task you need to perform. Avaya Secure Router 2330/4134 technical documents are structured with an emphasis on the tasks you perform. Customer documentation packaging The customer documentation roadmap section describes the content of the technical publications. Each publication belongs to a package of related documents. The packages are referred to as job functions. 17 Chapter 4: Information quality The Avaya Secure Router 2330/4134 customer documentation uses three designations to indicate the quality verification level for the information. Each designation indicates the quality testing level that the documentation has passed. The quality designation is also an indication of how the documentation is released. The three quality designations are Draft on page 17 Preliminary on page 17 Standard on page 17 Draft Draft quality of the document is verified by development. Draft information is consistent with the design intent of the service or feature. Sometimes, Draft documentation is released to customers for early trials and demos. Preliminary Preliminary quality of the document is verified by the product support and product verification organizations. Procedural information passes testing on hardware and software. Preliminary information is released to customers for the purposes of trials and demos. Preliminary status is cumulative. A document must achieve Draft status before it can achieve Preliminary. Standard Standard quality of the document is verified by product line management. All information is consistent with market positioning and support. 19 Chapter 5: Text conventions This section describes the text conventions used in the Avaya Secure Router 2330/4134 documentation. Text conventions Text conventions provide an explanation of how text is formatted throughout the customer documentation suite. Angle brackets Angle brackets (< >) indicate that you choose the text to enter based on the description inside the brackets. Do not type the brackets when entering the command. Example: If the command syntax is ping <ip_address>, you enter ping Bold or Bold Courier text Bold or Bold Courier text indicates command names, options, and text that you need to enter. Example: Use the dinfo command. Example: Enter show ip {alerts routes}. Example: Protocols > IP identifies the IP command on the Protocols menu. Braces Braces ({ }) indicate required elements in syntax descriptions where there is more than one option. You must choose only one of the options. Do not type the braces when entering the command. Ellipsis points Ellipsis points (...) indicate that you repeat the last element of the command as needed. Example: If the command syntax is ethernet/2/1 [ <parameter> <value> ]..., you enter ethernet/2/1 and as many parameter-value pairs as needed. Italic text Italic text indicates new terms or book titles. Example: Avaya Secure Router 4134 Installation - Chassis (NN ) Plain Courier text Plain Courier text indicates command syntax and system output, for example, prompts and system messages. 23 Chapter 6: Modular, task-based information Modular, task-based information is a quick reference for using the Avaya Secure Router 2330/4134 taskbased documentation. It describes the structure of task-based information and how it can be used most effectively. Task-based documentation Task-based documentation is a new way of packaging customer information in a structured, modular, task-centric format. Task-based documentation focuses on what the user must do, and the sequence in which tasks must be performed. The goal is to make Avaya documentation easy to find, easy to use, timely, and accurate. In task-based documentation, procedural information is included in the document. Supporting conceptual and reference information is provided, and the user is guided on how to use it by identified prerequisites or direct links and references. The user navigates the information by following the flows that are provided for tasks and procedures. 25 Work flows, task flows, and procedures The task flows guide you through activities on the Avaya Secure Router 2330/4134, whether it is configuration, upgrade, installation, maintenance, or troubleshooting. Each flow provides the prerequisites and links to the tasks or procedures. To perform or refer to a procedure, always follow the task flow. Following the task flows ensures all the requirements have been met for successful completion of the task. Work flows, task flows, and procedures Work flows, task flows and procedures have similar elements to maintain consistency and usability. Each section has a specific function. Purpose statements Used to explain why or when you would perform a work flow, task, or procedure and its impact. Prerequisites Lists everything you must do or understand prior to starting through the workflow, task, or procedure such as; tasks that should have already been completed, risks, confirmation of system status, required knowledge, time estimates or limitations, and links to supporting information. The prerequisite section is omitted if no required prerequisites exist. Documentation Roadmap August

26 Modular, task-based information Work flows or task flows This section is the flow chart diagram representing the task flow with navigational links to the tasks or procedures in the flow. Procedure steps Steps in numerical order for performing the procedure. Each step is a single action. Example procedures Some procedures use example procedures to provide the user with a sample of how the procedure is performed correctly with realistic settings. Variable definitions Possible values, ranges, or definitions of any variable used in the procedure steps. If variables are not used in the procedure or partial configuration, then the variables definition section is omitted. Job aid Information that assists the user in performing the procedure. The job aid is usually information that the user must know to complete the procedure successfully. The job aid is only used when required. 27 Task-based documentation terms work flow task or task flow procedure step variable Term Description A high-level or top-level grouping of tasks. A logical grouping of procedures that is represented as a single action in a flowchart diagram. Complex tasks may be divided into simpler tasks or sub-tasks. A logical grouping of steps that can be described as a single action in a task. A single action that is performed in a procedure. A placeholder in procedure steps that can represent a value or definition. Restructuring Avaya technical documents into a task-based format is an ongoing initiative.
