I. Introduction This document is divided into four major sections. The first section covers a step by step on how a user can log into the unit for configuration. The second section gives an overview of all the configuration screens and some of the pertinent values. The third section covers a step by step sample of a unit being configure for a restricted set of client cards along with local VPN authentication. The fourth section is a collection of trouble shooting tips that will help with the configuration of the unit. II. Logging into WiSAP Step 1 IP Address In order to configure the unit open a web browser and specify the IP address of the unit. Note the connection must be made through SSL, for example: Default Wireless Interface Default Ethernet Interface
Step 2 Security Alert A security alert is given about the certificate, click Yes in order to log into the unit. Step 2 Authentication Enter the User name and Password for the appropriate fields, the default settings are as follow: User Name: admin Password: admin Note: The username and password are case sensitive. The default username and password should be changed immediately.
III. WiSAP Overview Splash Screen Once the username and password have been authenticated you should see the following splash screen and menu. System Status System status shows the current state of the unit along with the following settings. Wireless IP, LAN IP, Mac Address and ESSID, Current Channel, Transmit and Receive Bytes, Device Up Time.
SAP Status Sub Menu The SAP Status shows all the wireless interfaces that are connected to the current unit. A list of MAC addresses along with quality, signal level and noise level will be showed here. LAN Settings This screen allows the configuration of the Ethernet interface. The system can use DHCP to configure the IP, gateway, DNS and WINS. The hostname and domain name must be configured manually.
DHCP Server This page configures the DHCP server for the wireless interface. A pool of 254 addresses can be specified as valid IP addresses, which will be issued by the unit. Client List Submenu The Client List shows all the MAC and IP addresses along with their expiration time for all the wireless clients that have linked to the unit.
Wireless Setup This page allows the configuration of the following items for the wireless interface: IP address A valid IP address. Channel the current channel that the unit will use to transmit. All the units must be using the same channel. ESSID A name that can be used to identified a wireless network. Clients can be configured to only interact with access points, which have the specified ESSID. This form of security is not recommended; because an ESSID is very simple to retrieve when sniffing traffic. We recommend that all the units in a particular area have the same ESSID. Security Mode The unit supports two types of security policies for allowing clients to connect. The first is the ESSID that allows users with the same ESSID to connect to the unit. A client can use the ESSID of ANY to connect to the strongest ESSID available. The second form of security is the MAC address list, which blocks all the clients that are not in the MAC address list. This mode is more secure but can be burdensome if you have a large number of units. Note: Although we allow a user to connect to WiSAP they will not be able to surf or access any computer on the network. The user must be authenticated through the VPN interface in order to have access to network or the internet.
Other SAPs The Other SAP sub menu allows for the configuration of bridging between WiSAPs and WiRepeaters. The unit supports the following three modes: No Bridging The unit will not link to any other repeater in the area. Open Access The unit will like to any other repeater in the area. Units use a spanning tree protocol that will drop any link that causes a circular reference. Use MAC Address List The unit will only link with other units, which have their MAC address specified in the list. This is the preferred method to prevent rouge access points from entering the network. The spanning tree protocol will also be available with this setting ensuring no circular references. VPN Setup The VPN setup page is where we determine which users can access our network. Once the user is authenticated he will have access to the corporate network as well as access to resources on the wireless network as long as they have established VPN connections. The following parameters are configured by the user: Local Address The local address has to be in the same subnet mask as the Ethernet address. This IP is exposed to the Ethernet Interface allowing administrators coming from the Ethernet interface to always find the unit. This is extremely helpful when the Ethernet interface is configured by DHCP and the IP is dynamic.
VPN Pool Start This IP address identifies the first address in the block of addresses that are assigned to the VPN server. VPN Pool End This IP address identifies the last address in the block of addresses that are assigned to the VPN server. Note: The IP addresses must be a continuous block. Auth Server Address and Port The IP address and port number for the radius server. Accounting Server Address and Port The IP address and port number for the radius server. Server Security Key The security key is used by the radius server in order to validate user requests. Please see your system administrator to retrieve this key. Authentication Type This setting supports two modes Local and Radius. Local mode verifies user names and passwords against a list of user names and passwords that have been defined locally in the unit.
Radius authentication allows the unit to authenticate against Window user names and passwords. This is the preferred mechanism in a corporate environment for keeping track of users. Note you must have a Windows 2000 server running IAS. Toolbox Setup Password This page allows the user to change the current username and password. Note: It s advised to change the username and password as soon as the unit is configured for actual use.
Reset Modem The Reset Modem sub menu allows the user to reboot the unit from any remote location.
IV. How to configure a WiSAP The configuration of a WiSAP is straight forward; here is what you ll need before getting started with your configuration: Getting Started 1) Ensure there s a DHCP server available if you enable DHCP resolution in the LAN Settings. Other wise you will need the following: a. Static IP address for LAN IP b. The class for IP entered (Net Mask) c. IP address of default gateway d. Primary and Secondary (optional) DNS IP addresses e. WINS IP address (optional) 2) A static IP address that will get assigned to the Local interface for the VPN. Note this IP address will always be accessible from the LAN interface. This IP should be used when ever the LAN interface is configured by using DHCP and the IP given is not static. 3) A Pool of static IP addresses that will be issued by the VPN server. Note the IP addresses should be unique and should not conflict with any of the IP addresses the current DHCP server is issuing. If conflicting IP addresses are used, users will not be able to connect to the WiSAP. 4) If a radius server is being used you will need the Secrete Key, IP address and ports. 5) If the VPN needs to be accessed from the outside you will need to open port 1723 and direct all of that port traffic to the static IP assigned to the Local interface in the VPN section. If the firewall is filtering on protocols, protocol 43 (GRE) will need to be allowed access. Once all the pertinent information is gathered, you can continue with the setup of the unit. This setup assumes the following: 1) DHCP Server will be used to configure the LAN interface 2) VPN authentication will be set to Local 3) MAC address list is used to restrict the users that connect to the unit.
Step 1 a) Follow the instructions in the Logging into WiSAP. Step 2 a) Click on the LAN Settings tab b) Click the Use DHCP check box c) Enter a unique host name within the organization d) Enter the domain name for the organization e) Click the update button. Step 3 a) Click on the VPN Setup tab b) Enter the last two octets of a static IP assigned by the Administrator 1 c) Enter the last two octets for the beginning of the static pool d) Enter the last two octets for the end of the static pool e) Ensure Authentication Type is set to local f) Click the update button to save the current changes g) Enter a user name, password and click the add button. Repeat this step for all the users that will have access to the system. Step 4 (Optional) a) Click the Wireless Setup tab b) Add the MAC address of the card being used to configure unit. c) Enter an ESSID which should be the same through the corporation. d) Change the security Mode to MAC Address List. e) Click Update Button. NOTE: If a MAC address is not present in the list, no client will be able to connect to the wireless interface. The unit can be accessed through the LAN interface with the static IP address that was assigned in the VPN Setup or the IP addressed assigned to the LAN interface. Step 5 a) Click on the Toolbox tab b) Click on the Reset Modem sub menu c) Click the Reset Now button 2 Setup is Complete Now you are ready to create a VPN connection and establish a link to the unit. Once you re connected to the unit through the VPN you ll be able to access network resources and the internet 3. 1 This IP can be used to configure the Unit from the LAN interface. 2 Make sure if you ve turned on MAC Address List security your MAC Address is part of the list that can connect to the device. 3 ISP provider is required to have access to the internet. Local security must allow users to have access to the internet.
V. Trouble Shooting Tips Connectivity 1) Wireless connection in windows will not detect the WiSAP access point? a. Open the preferences for the wireless interface and set the ESSID to ANY, make sure changes are applied. The unit will rescan and you should some change in the signal and strength meters. b. Try getting close to the unit and verify you can link. 2) I have a good signal but I still don t have an IP? a. Check to see if the unit is restricting IP address based on MAC address and make sure the MAC address of the card trying to connect is present in the system. If the card is not present in the list you will see the strength of the unit but you will not be able to link, which is why you don t have an IP. b. Check the Enable DHCP Server check box in the DHCP Server tab. If this is not selected an IP will not be issued to the wireless connections. You can specify a wireless address in the TCP/IP configuration of your adaptor. The default IP address for the wireless interface is , you can pick and address below ) I have an IP address but I can t surf the internet or access network resources? a. A VPN connection needs to be established in order to surf the internet or access network resources. VPN 1) VPN connection is rejected by the WiSAP unit? a. Ensure that your current version of windows has 128 bit encryption. b. Ensure the username and password is part of the user access list in the VPN Setup Page. 2) I have a VPN connection but I can t access the internet or network resources? a. Try to ping the default gateway on the LAN interface, if you receive a response everything is configured correctly in the unit. There s a configuration problem in the router which is not allowing your data to go outside your gateway. Contact the network administrator to help trouble shoot this problem. If the ping fails, check the
Ethernet connection to the unit ensure you have connectivity to the hub or switch. 3) Can I have two VPN connections at the same time? a. Yes you can establish a VPN connection to the WiSAP unit and another VPN connection to some other VPN concentrator. 4) Is my connection through the VPN Secure? a. Yes, the WiSAP unit uses MS CHAP V2, which uses hashed passwords and 128 bit encryption for the transmission of data. This ensures all that sent through the wireless interface will be kept secure and private. Note this does not prevent someone from sniffing the information once it makes it to the physical Ethernet connection. 5) I m having trouble accessing my VPN from outside my corporation, what s wrong? a. Make sure your firewall is routing port 1723 to the static IP assigned to the Local address in the VPN setup tab. 6) I m still having trouble accessing my VPN from the outside and I ve checked port 1723 to be directed to the WiSAP IP address. a. Check to see if you re firewall is filtering Protocols, if it is make sure you allow Protocol 43 (GRE). This protocol is used by the VPN server.
Click on Close button to close Network Connection Details. You are back to the Local Area Connection Status window.
