OPEN TELCO: A take on the Virtual Central Office Hanen Garcia, M. Eng. Global Telco Solutions Manager Red Hat, Inc.
CENTRAL OFFICE Current Status Desired Status Huge Source of CAPEX and OPEX Reduction CAPEX and OPEX > 30% Closed, Rigid and Complex Open, Flexible and Standardized Variety of access devices Cloud based Model Variety of purpose built hardware Software Defined and virtualized Lack of standard interfaces => Lack of programmability infrastructure Full programmability
VIRTUAL CENTRAL OFFICE Service Agility End to End Operational Efficiency Improved Customer Experience Lower Costs Define a cloud native approach for a virtualized central office leveraging NFV and open source technologies
VIRTUAL CENTRAL OFFICE PRINCIPLES VCO is a reference architecture based on three important principles 1. OpenDaylight as a common controller for both the virtual network overlay and the physical network fabric underlay 2. OpenStack as a common platform, for both NFV Infrastructure and VIM, to ensure an orchestrator agnostic framework 3. Consolidation of control plane functions into the virtualized infrastructure and the distribution of the data plane into the network fabric
VIRTUAL CENTRAL OFFICE SCOPE Residential services Internet broadband access Business services Remote & Branch Office (ROBO), Enterprise CPE Mobile services
