Part No Revision 1 8 July 2002 SIB Description This document describes how to remove and replace a Switch Interface Board (SIB) on a Juniper Networks T320 Internet router. For additional installation and configuration information, refer to the following documentation: T320 Internet Router Hardware Guide JUNOS Internet Software Operational Mode Command Reference JUNOS Internet software configuration guides Contents SIB Description... 1 SIB Components... 2 Tools and Parts Required... 2 Replace a SIB... 3 Remove a SIB... 3 Install a Replacement SIB... 4 Verify That the SIB is Installed Correctly... 5 Contact Juniper Networks... 5 The SIBs provide the switching function to the destination FPC (see Figure 1). The SIBs create the switch fabric for the router, providing up to a total of 320 million packets per second (320 Mpps) of forwarding. Three SIBs are installed in the router. The SIBs are located at the center rear of the chassis in the slots labeled SIB0 through SIB2. SIBs are hot-insertable and hot-removable. 1

Tools and Parts Required 2 Figure 1: SIB SIB Components Table 1: SIB LEDs Extractor clip Tools and Parts Required Each SIB consists of the following components: Switch Fabric ASICs. High-speed links (HSLs) to each FPC. Three LEDs, located on the SIB faceplate and replicated on the craft interface, that display the status of the SIB. Table 1 describes the functions of the SIB LEDs. SIB online/offline button, located on the SIB faceplate. Phillips (+) screwdrivers, numbers 1 and 2 Electrostatic bags, one for each SIB removed Antistatic mat LEDs ESD grounding wrist strap Online/offline button Extractor clip Label Color State Description OK Green On steadily SIB is functioning normally. Blinking SIB is starting up. FAIL Amber On steadily SIB has failed. ACTIVE Green On steadily SIB is in active mode. Replacement SIB or blank panel for each SIB removed 2058

Replace a SIB Replace a SIB Remove a SIB To replace a SIB, use the following procedures: Remove a SIB on page 3 Install a Replacement SIB on page 4 Verify That the SIB is Installed Correctly on page 5 The router can have up to three SIBs installed. The SIBs are located in the rear of the chassis in the slots marked SIB0 through SIB2. Each SIB weighs approximately 4.5 lb (2 kg). To remove a SIB, follow this procedure (see Figure 2): 1. Have ready an antistatic mat placed on a stable, flat surface. 2. Attach an ESD wrist strap to your bare wrist, and connect the wrist strap to one of the ESD points on the chassis. 3. Press the online/offline button on the SIB faceplate. Press and hold down the button until the green ONLINE LED goes out (about 5 seconds). 4. Loosen the captive screws on the ejector handles on each side of the SIB faceplate. 5. Flip the ejector handles outward to unseat the SIB. 6. Grasp both ejector handles, pull firmly on the SIB, and slide the SIB about three-quarters of the way out of the chassis. 7. Move one of your hands underneath the SIB to support it, and slide it completely out of the chassis. 3

Replace a SIB 4 Figure 2: Remove a SIB Install a Replacement SIB To install a replacement SIB into the rear of the chassis, follow this procedure (see Figure 3): 1. Attach an ESD wrist strap to your bare wrist, and connect the wrist strap to one of the ESD points on the chassis. 2. Hold the SIB by placing one hand underneath to support it and the other hand on one of the ejector handles on the SIB faceplate. 3. Carefully align the sides of the SIB with the guides inside the chassis. 4. Slide the unit into the chassis, carefully ensuring that it is correctly aligned. 5. Grasp both ejector handles and press them inwards to seat the SIB. 6. Tighten the captive screws on the ejector handles. 7. Press the offline/online button until the green ONLINE LED lights to bring the SIB online. 2059

Contact Juniper Networks Figure 3: Install a Replacement SIB Verify That the SIB is Installed Correctly Contact Juniper Networks To verify that the SIB is functioning correctly, check the LEDs on its faceplate. The green OK LED should light steadily. To check the status of the SIBs, use the following CLI command: user@host> show chassis environment sib For technical support, contact Juniper Networks at support@juniper.net, or at JTAC (within the United States) or (from outside the United States).
