IEEE Testing Signal Compliance of ZigBee Standard Tektronix 1
Agenda: 1: What is ZigBee 2: ZigBee Specification 3: ZigBee Signal Analysis 4: Demonstration for ZigBee analysis 2
What is ZigBee (1) Short Range Radio Communication System Low Power Over 1 year battery life, versus 1 week for Bluetooth Low Cost $3.00, versus $6.00 for Bluetooth Low Bitrate 250 kbps maximum, versus 1 Mbps for Bluetooth Low Complexity Simpler channelization rules Not frequency hopped TDMA user separation (single Tx/Rx frequency) 26 protocol primitives, versus 131 for Bluetooth Lots of devices in close proximity 30 meter Range (w/o extender, 10 meters for Bluetooth) Up to devices in a single WPAN (8 for Bluetooth) Limited only by short address field and traffic requirements 3
What is ZigBee (2) Wireless Protocols Complexity/Power Consumption WLAN IEEE a WLAN IEEE g WLAN IEEE b Bluetooth/ IEEE UWB IEEE IEEE (ZigBee) Data Rate 4
What is ZigBee (3) Application of ZigBee: Wireless Home Security Remote Control: Air Conditioner, Lighting TV, other electronics instrument Factory Automation Remote Monitoring 5
What is ZigBee (4) One of Wireless Personal Area Network family (WPAN) Standards of Physical Layer Specifications IEEE : PHY of Bluetooth Version 1.1 IEEE : PHY of High Speed WPAN IEEE a: PHY of UWB IEEE : PHY of ZigBee 6
What is ZigBee (5) Network Topology Peer to Peer connection Work controlled by Network coordinator Routing connection Combined network 7
ZigBee Specification (1) ZigBee Alliance: Define ZigBee Platform Stack IEEE Committee: Define Physical & MAC Layer 8
ZigBee Specification (2) Frequency and Channel Allocation Nominal Frequency Region Band Freq. Range (MHz) Channel Spacing Channel Numbers: 868 MHz Europe N.A. Channel : One Channel Ch 0 only 915 MHz Americas ISM MHz World ISM MHz 1 to 10, at (k-1) MHz, k = 1 to 10 5MHz 10 Channels 11 to 26, at (k-11) MHz, k = 11 to Channels 9
ZigBee Specification (3) BPSK: Binary Phase Shift Keying (Modulation) O-QPSK: Offset Quadrature Phase Shift keying (Modulation) 10
ZigBee Specification (4) One Data One Data Symbol is 4 bits, 32 bits chip spread one data Symbol 11
ZigBee Specification (5) When you demod and get the Symbol Table, you should take Q Phase back half Symbol Forward (Move to half Symbol Left in above picture) 12
ZigBee Specification (5) Regional Regulation Europe: ETSI, ETS US: FCC, FCC Rules part , 249 Japan: Telec, 2.4GHz band low power communication system ZigBee Alliance certification Test Adaptive Platform Test Logo certification IEEE Physical Layer Test Rules for ZigBee RF signal quality 13
ZigBee Specification (6) Regional Regulation requires ETS Effective radiated power Peak power density Frequency range Transmitter Spurious emission FCC part , 249 Max peak conducted output power Power Spectral density Field Strength of emission Frequency tolerance Emission out of band Telec: Test Method for 2.4GHz Low power communication system Frequency deviation OBW and Spread bandwidth Spurious emission Transmit power Secondary radiated power 14
ZigBee Specification (7) IEEE Requires: (2.450MHz, 868M/915MHz PYH) Transmitter Specification Tx to Rx and Rx to Tx Turnaround Time: < 192us Error Vector Magnitude: Less than 1000 chips Transmit center frequency tolerance: +- 40ppm max Transmit power should be capable of transmitting at least 3dbm (Max power is limited by local regulation) 15
ZigBee Signal Analysis (1) -Data capturing Swept analyzers require slow sweeps and Max Hold due to the low repetition rate bursts used in Zigbee For Timing Analysis, Zero SPAN mode can be used, but not together with other domains of analysis 16
ZigBee Signal Analysis (2) -Data capturing RTSA can acquire the ZigBee Packet Signal using FMT (Frequency MASK Trigger) The timing measurement is accurate and simple You can acquire only when the signal is generated Multiple domain views provide more in-depth analysis in multiple domains 17
ZigBee Signal Analysis (3) -Power Measure Scope of Measurement Carrier Frequency is calculated from whole sampling data of Packet Average Power of this Packet 18
ZigBee Signal Analysis (4) -Timing Analysis It is easy to measure timing: Polling is every 100ms period Turn around Time Tx to Rx: 8.46ms Specification: 12 Symbol periods (Less than 192us) Less than 12 Symbol period 19
ZigBee Signal Analysis (5) -Timing Analysis You may comfortably measure Turnaround Polling Packet Width You may monitor the specified signal (Packet) at the same position every triggering on the time vs power view due to stable trigger 20
ZigBee Signal Analysis (6) -Demodulation Eye Diagram View at the specified position of the Packet The marker is synchronized between three views: Time vs Power Symbol Table Constellation After IQ phase adjusted Constellation view 21
ZigBee Signal Analysis (7) -Demodulation Constellation and IQ waveform with I and Q Phase in original position (I shifted ½ chip period: Original IQ phase) IQ waveform and Symbol Table after IQ symbol timing recovery 22
ZigBee Signal Analysis (8) -Demodulation Each measurement point is correlated in time, and in each, you can make move each marker Synchronously Time vs Power, EVM vs time and Symbol Table view 23
RTSA Demonstration for IEEE measurement Using RSA3408A 8GHz, 36M Real Time Band Width Option 21 Digital Demodulation & ZigBee evaluation Kit: 2450MHz Band 24
Summary: Using the RTSA for ZigBee measurements RTSA easily can capture the ZigBee packet data Using FMT (Frequency MASK Trigger) Timing measurement using Time vs Power view is simple and easy using deep memory; data is captured seamlessly Multi-Domain analysis function with time correlation is very powerful tool for ZigBee PYH analysis Offset QPSK and half sine filter are supported and you can see the EVM and Symbol Table after recovery iq symbol timing 25
