Emma Ziolkowski Term Definition Image blog a web page or site that speaks to an audience of readers informally about opinionated topics. a blog is a website on which the author posts entries in a journalism format. cookies cpu something on a web page or site that tracks and stores data. a text file created by the server computer when a user enters information into a website. The main purpose of cookies is to identify users and customize web pages for them. a computer. central processing unit. CPU (central processing unit) is an older term for processor and microprocessor, the central unit in a computer containing the logic circuitry that performs the instructions of a computer's programs.the brains of the computer where most calculations take place.

2 digital literacy ability to find, evaluate, share, and create content via a computer and the internet. directory a general approach to organizing information. a structure created on a device for storing and retriever computer files. encryption a conversation of data into another form called ciphertext. the translation of data into secret code. firewall hyperlink a network security system. can either be hardware or software. a system used to prevent access to or from a private network. firewalls are often used by companies to prevent individuals outside the company from accessing private documents and data. hypertext systems. on the web or other hypertext systems hyperlink is a synonym for both link and hypertext link. an object on a web document that either links to another location on the website or another

5 search engine a search engine is a web page or site that allows you to browse the internet. spam excess amount of advertisements that are unwanted and not beneficial to the person receiving. spyware a software the converts info from one computer to another by transferring data. stand alone environment a situation where an application runs on a single computer. does not pull resources from outside networks or equipment it is self reliant. url uniform resource locator. (ie is the unique address for a file that is accessible on the internet. usb universal serial bus. (ie a usb stick) a plug and play interface between a computer and add-on devices, such as media players, keyboards, telephones, digital

6 cameras, scanners, flash drives, joysticks and printers. wan web browser wide area network. a geographically dispersed telecommunications network. the term distinguished a broader telecommunication structure from a local area network. a software application retrieving data information. provides a way to look at and internet with all of the information on the world wide web. website www a location connected to the internet. a collection related to the world wide web files called a home page. a company or an individual tells you how to get their web site by giving you the address of their home page. world wide web. a technical definition of the world wide web is all the resources and user on the internet that are using the hypertext transfer protocol
