3 What Minimal Agreement Should Include (1) Reference Model: basic terminology (2) Metrics: 2-way latency, packet loss, path jitter, path availability (3) Measurements: active, out of band, shared fate, common TOD, +/- 1 msec accuracy End to end ( operational), path, distance sensitive Disclosed intervals and structure of the measurement stream with agreed on minimum standards: (frequency, packet size, probe size)? (4) Aggregation/Reporting Daily averages of all measurements aggregated as (individual ->probe->cycle -> 1h/24h), Do we report statistics (median, min, max )? (5) Dispute resolution/penalties -On 1to1 basis subject to business agreement (6) Paradigm - Trust but verify 01/24/05 3

5 Minimal Definitions Latency (network delay): is measured by the synthetic (UDP, PING) traffic every 5 minutes on an ongoing bases between the designated endpoint and reported as: TBD Jitter (inter-packet delay variance): is measured by the synthetic (UDP, ) traffic every 5 (?) minutes on an ongoing bases between the designated endpoint and reported as: TBD Packet loss/packet delivery: is measured by the synthetic (UDP ) traffic every 5 minutes on an ongoing bases between the designated endpoint and reported as % of lost packets to all packets sent Availability (network): is measured by the synthetic (UDP ) traffic every 5 minutes on an ongoing bases between the designated endpoint and reported as % of successful transactions. 01/24/05 5
6 Metrics and Scope Metrics: latency (2-way), Jitter, Packet loss, Availability? need to agree what these metrics mean; possible solution is to accept IPPM RFC definitions or some extract of them Scope: reference scope vs operational scope reference scope - interface points ( was is covered) Operational scope edge routers (what is measured) Note: the measurements will be limited to the path within the edges of the provider network - Operational scope = reference scope Note: Do we need more metrics? 7 Measurements Properties of metrics Proposed rules: Active measurements injected synthetic traffic (frequency, packet size, probe size) Out of band not in a customer stream (not the same logical flow) shared fate - shares the physical not logical path, gets the same QoS treatment as the customer traffic Aggregation per probe, per 1h, per 24 h Path measurements, not aggregates over network Distance sensitive, TOD synchronized Note: Reported performance depends on the measurement methodology Note: The difference between shared path vs shared fate 01/24/05 7
