About this guide This guide describes installing the Riverbed Cascade Express in a standard rack, connecting it to your network, verifying network connectivity, and verifying that it is receiving and processing traffic data. When these tasks are completed, the Express is ready to configure operationally. Operational configuration is described in the Express help system. At least one data source must be provided to the Express in order to verify the installation. Therefore, the most streamlined approach is to configure your data sources to send traffic data to the Express as part of preparing to begin the installation. The Preparations for Installation section of this guide discusses topics that should be considered before mounting and cabling the Express. Safety Notice This guide refers to the step-by-step instructions shipped with the hardware for the mechanical steps of mounting the chassis. To reduce the risk of personal injury or equipment damage, observe the hardware manufacturer s safety warnings and cautions, which are provided in the rack mounting kit. iv

1. Inventory and inspection 1. Check the shipping documentation to ensure that all cartons have arrived. 2. If you have not already done so, visually inspect each carton for indications of damage. 3. If any cartons are damaged or missing, contact Riverbed Technical Support before continuing. Phone United States and Canada: Phone outside U.S. and Canada: support@riverbed.com Web: 4. Unpack the contents of the shipping cartons and inventory the contents against the shipping documentation. 5. If any components of the order are damaged or missing, contact Riverbed Technical Support. 2. Preparations for installation Before installing the chassis, ensure that the following considerations have been addressed: Traffic or traffic data sources Rack space Power Cooling Network connections Access to network Configuration information Safety information Traffic or traffic data sources The Express can use traffic flow information from NetFlow, IPFIX, sflow, or Packeteer sources. Some models also monitor network traffic directly via a tap or mirror port on the monitored network. The Express must be receiving traffic or traffic flow data in order for you to verify successful installation and configuration. 1

Rack space The Express is best mounted in a 4-post, 19-inch rack or cabinet. It can also be mounted in a 2-post, 19-inch rack, but this requires a deep shelf. Height: 8.7 cm, 3.44 in. (2U) Width: 45.1 cm, 17.8 in. Depth: 70.5 cm, 27.8 in. Weight: 29.5 kg, 65 lbs. Power Cooling The Express has a 750-watt power supply that requires: 100V-127V, 50/60 Hz, 11A, or 200V-240V, 50/60 Hz, 5.5A Required cooling is 1826 BTU/hour. Ambient air should be: Air temperature: 10 to 35 C (50 to 95 F) Humidity: 8% to 80% Network connections Management port The Express is equipped with a 100/1000baseTX management port that must connect to a hub or switch on the management network. The management port is set by default for auto-negotiation. Ensure that a straight-through cable to a hub or switch port on the management network is available at the rack location. Ensure that the management network switch port is set to establish a connection at 100 or 1000 Mb/s and full duplex. On flow-monitoring-only models of the Express, this port receives all traffic flow information, in addition to providing access to the management GUI. The other models have separate connectors for monitoring traffic on the monitored network. 2

Monitored network All models except the flow-monitoring-only models connect via straight-through cables to taps or mirror ports on the monitored network. Models that use electrical cables include 2-port 10/100/1000baseTX (RJ45)connectors. Models that use optical cables include 2-port 1000baseSX connectors. Ensure that optical cables are multimode fiber with LC connectors. Ensure that the necessary mirror ports are set up and that the cables are available in the rack where the Express is to be installed. RMM port The Express hardware includes a remote chassis management module. The Intel Remote Management Module (Intel RMM) is operating whenever power is available to the Express chassis. It allows you to power the chassis on and off remotely, over the network. It can also be used for remote troubleshooting in the event of a hardware problem. The RMM operates independently of other Express functions and provides dedicated access to the hardware level. It has its own network address and provides its own web-based user interface, which you can access with a web browser. The network address for the RMM does not need to be on the same subnet as the address for the Express management interface. The RMM has a 100baseTX port that must connect to a hub or switch on the management network. The RMM port is set by default for auto-negotiation. Ensure that a straight-through cable to a hub or switch port on the management network is available at the rack location. Ensure that the management network switch port is set to establish a connection at 100 Mb/s and full duplex. Access to network If you lock down your network on a port-by-port basis, ensure that the following ports are open between the Express and the services that need access to it: TCP/22 (ssh) This is needed for secure shell access to Express software components and for the Express to obtain information from servers via scripts. UDP/123 (ntp) Time synchronization. UDP/161 (snmp) Profiler uses SNMP to obtain interface information from switches. Also, management systems use this port to read the Express MIB. TCP/443 (https) Secure web-based management interfaces. 3

The Intel documentation disk contains a multilingual safety booklet that describes safe installation practices. Safety information is also included in the rack installation instructions (the folded sheet titled Slide Rail Installation ). Familiarize yourself with the safety information before installing the hardware. The chassis and rail hardware are provided by Intel and covered by the Intel safety information. Riverbed makes no modifications to or exclusions from the Intel safety recommendations. 6

3. Mounting and powering CAUTION: If your methodology requires you to configure a system in one area and then install it in another area, skip ahead to the Configuration section before continuing with this section. When you are ready to mount the chassis in the rack, 1. Locate the box containing the rail kit. This includes rails and rail installation instructions. 2. Locate the instructions. These are on a folded-up 11 x 17 sheet of paper labeled 1. Slide Rail Installation on one side and 2. Cable Management Arm Installation on the other side. 3. Mount the rails in the rack, as described in the instructions. 4. Place the chassis into the component mounting channels of the rails and ensure that the component release levers lock the chassis securely in the rails, as described and illustrated in the instructions. Observe the safety cautions in the mounting instructions. 5. Pressing the slide extension release levers, slide the chassis into the rack. 6. Connect the power cable to the chassis and to rack power. 7. Press the Power button. This is located near the center of the control panel on the upper-right side of the front of the chassis. 8. Install the bezel by pushing it directly on to the front of the chassis. A key is taped inside the bezel. You can use this key to lock the bezel in place. The bezel covers the power button and prevents people from accidentally switching off the Sensor. Refer to the Intel Server System SR2500AL User s Guide on the Intel Server Deployment Toolkit CD for descriptions of the controls and indicators on the control panel. 7

4. Express configuration The first time you log in to a newly-installed system, it displays an initial Setup page. This is a one-time display. After you set up the initial configuration, you can make subsequent configuration changes on the Profiler Setup pages of the GUI. If your company arranged for the Express to be preconfigured by Riverbed, then this configuration section is unnecessary, and you can skip to the Network connection section. To configure the Express, you need a separate PC and a crossover cable. This PC must have an Ethernet port configured for TCP/IP networking. It must also be running Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer. The LAN interface adapter settings of this PC must be set to: IP Address: Network mask: Gateway: Using these settings, connect to the Express as follows: 1. Use a crossover Ethernet cable to connect the Ethernet port of your PC to the Management connector on the left rear of the Express. 2. Point your browser to This displays the login page. 3. Log in with the default user name admin and the default password admin (unless you arranged with Riverbed for a unique user name and password). This displays the Express Setup page. 4. Fill in all the required fields (marked with an asterisk) on the Setup page. 5. In the RMM Settings section, click Set up RMM. This opens a setup page. 6. Enter the factory preset username admin and password password in the setup popup. 8

7. Enter the RMM network interface IP address, netmask and gateway and click OK. 8. Check to ensure that the new RMM address information is displayed in the RMM Settings section. 9. At the bottom of the Setup page, there is a checkbox labeled Power down after configuration. If the Express is mounted in the rack and you are ready to connect it to the network, leave the Power down after configuration box unselected and click Configure now. If the Express must be powered off and mounted in the rack before it can be connected to the network, select the Power down after configuration box and click Configure now. 10. When you click Configure now, you will be prompted to change the password. The password you enter here must be the one you will use after this point in the procedure. Enter your new password. 11. When the password change operation is completed, exit from the browser session and disconnect the crossover cable from the Express. Additional configuration tasks, such as specifying a traffic collection profile scheme that is not available on the Setup page, can be performed by logging in to the Express GUI after it is connected to the management network. If the Express is mounted in the rack and ready to connect to the network, proceed to the next section, Network connections. If the Express still needs to be mounted, wait for it to power down (indicated by the green Power indicator blinking) and then mount it in the rack as described in the previous section, Mounting and powering, before proceeding to the next section, Network connections. 9

10

5. Network connections After the Express is mounted, configured, and has been powered on for more than two minutes, connect the network cable and verify the connections as follows: 1. Connect the cable from your network to the Management connector on the left rear of the Express. This is the same connector that you used to configure the Express. 2. If your Express is a flow-monitoring-only model, skip to Step 3 below. If your Express is not flow-monitoring-only model, then connect the cables from the tap or mirror ports on the monitored networks to the network monitoring ports, which are labeled Mon0 and Mon1. 3. Connect a cable from the network to the RMM connector on the right rear of the Express. The RMM connection and the Express management connection can be on different subnets, but these must correspond to the addresses you assigned for each interface on the Setup page. 4. Point your browser to the Express IP address that you specified on the Setup page during the Configuration task. This displays the login page. 5. Log in to the admin account with the password you specified at the end of the Configuration task. 11

6. Navigate to the System Information Devices/Interfaces page and check the status of the data source devices on the Devices tab. When a data source comes on line, the Express begins collecting data. At least one data source must be listed with a green status indicator before you can complete the Express installation verification step. If no data sources are listed on the System Information Devices/Interfaces page Devices tab, then Express installation and configuration cannot be verified. Set up at least one data source device (preferably all data source devices) and then perform the installation verification described in the Verification section below. 6. Additional configuration Additional configuration can be performed by logging in to the Express GUI and navigating to the Profiler Setup pages. For example, you may want to set up profile period as early as possible. The initial Setup page offers the choice of collecting separate traffic profiles for: Weekdays, weeknights, and weekends, or Weekdays, weekends, Saturdays, and Sundays. If you want to add more profiles or use a different profile scheme, 1. Log in to the Express. 2. Go to the Profiler Setup Profile Periods page. 12

3. Click Reconfigure Weekly Scheme to open the profile scheme composer. 4. Specify the days and times of the traffic collection profiles you want to use. For detailed information, go to the Profiler help system, select the Index tab, and enter profiles as the keyword to search for. When you specify a new profile scheme, Express discards any current baseline information and begins collecting new data. For descriptions of making other configuration changes, refer to the Profiler help system. 7. Verification Complete the installation by: 1. Verifying Express operation. 2. Verifying that the Remote Management Module is accessible. 3. Exiting the installation process. Verifying Express operation Verify that the Express has been successfully installed and configured by making the following checks. 1. Go to the Dashboard page and verify that the graphs display data. 13

2. Go to the System Information Profiler page and assure that all status indications (System and Component, DNS Server) are displaying OK. 3. Go to the System Information Devices/Interfaces page and assure that each data source that is expected to be available is listed and that no status indicators are red. 4. Go to the Reports Traffic page. On the Hosts tab, click Run now. Verify that a traffic report is displayed. (It will take a short time for the query to run and the report to display.) 14

15

Verifying Remote Management Module access Verify that the RMM can be accessed as follows: 1. Point your browser to the IP address that you specified for the RMM on the Setup page during the Configuration task. For example, This displays the RMM login page. 2. Log in to the admin account with the default password password (unless you arranged for the system to be shipped with a different password). 3. While logged in to the RMM, you can change the default RMM password and define additional RMM user accounts. A successful login verifies accessibility to the remote management module. Exiting the installation process After verifying that Express is receiving and reporting traffic data and its remote management module is accessible over the network, ensure that the responsible person has the IP address, login name, and password of the Express and the RMM. This completes the installation process. The Express can now be turned over to those who are responsible for setting up user accounts and operational parameters. Refer to the online help system for further configuration procedures. 16
