5 2 Media Shuttle Overview Signiant Media Shuttle is the industry s only hybrid SaaS-based solution for the secure and accelerated movement of files while delivering powerfully simple user interfaces in the Cloud and maintaining content wherever desired. 6 3 Media Shuttle Network Architecture Overview Signiant Media Shuttle employs a simple, distributed and robust network architecture as illustrated in the following diagram: 3.1 Architectural Highlights: The Signiant service components exist in the cloud and provide highly-available web servers, database servers, management and reporting services and automatic application updates. For customers wishing to store their content in the Cloud, Media Shuttle supports both Amazon S3 and Microsoft Azure object storage. For purely cloud object storage deployments, no server software is required on-premises. For on-premises deployments, the Media Shuttle storage server software is installed on one or more Windows or Linux servers. On-premises content storage can be local disk, network-attached storage or SAN. On-premises Media Shuttle servers may be installed in a load-balanced configuration for 2017 Signiant Inc. 7 performance scalability and high-availability, a peer configuration for segregation of portal traffic, or a combination of both. When load-balanced servers are being used, a common shared storage is required among the load-balanced servers. Media Shuttle relays may optionally be used as a secure, intermediate transfer point in order to simplify corporate firewall rules. Relays are not applicable if on-premises storage servers are not being used. Users access Media Shuttle via a browser and/or the Signiant app and may connect from either the customer s own network or the public Internet. The Media Shuttle user interface is served from the cloud using a secure, encrypted channel. All file uploads and downloads are both secure and accelerated and the data flows directly between the user s system and the Media Shuttle storage servers (on-premises or cloud object storage servers). The Media Shuttle service in the cloud routinely sends status requests to the Media Shuttle Servers, and will automatically transfer application updates as they become available. Media Shuttle servers transmit status updates and transfer statistics to the Media Shuttle service in the cloud. For on-premises deployments, it is necessary to enable firewall rules which allow connections to the Media Shuttle storage server(s) from the Media Shuttle Service in the cloud and from users on the Internet for transferring file data. 8 3.2 Media Shuttle Installation and Configuration Requirements On-Premises Deployments The following summarizes the key points related to installation and configuration of the Media Shuttle storage server(s) for on-premises storage: Installation and configuration of server(s) meeting hardware and operating system requirements. Appropriately-sized storage for content, whether local or network storage must be provisioned. Refer to the Signiant Bandwidth Calculator at to assist with sizing your content storage based on the format of the media being stored. Firewall rules must be configured on the network firewall(s) to allow connections to the Media Shuttle storage server(s) from the Media Shuttle service in the cloud and from users on the Internet for transferring file data to the Media Shuttle storage servers. Firewall rules must be configured for Media Shuttle relays, if being used. For a complete list of system requirements, pre-installation checklists and firewall rules required, please refer to the Signiant Media Shuttle Before You Begin Guide Cloud Object Storage Deployments The following summarizes the key points related to the configuration of the Media Shuttle for cloud object storage storage: If all Media Shuttle portals are to be configured purely for cloud object storage then there is no requirement to install Media Shuttle storage servers (or relays) at all. However, if a mix of on-premises storage and cloud object storage is to be used for the portals then Media Shuttle storage servers will still be required (refer to section 3.2.1). Appropriate credentials are required for accessing cloud object storage in either Amazon S3 or Microsoft Azure. In a purely cloud object storage deployment, firewall rules must still be configured on the network firewall to permit users to perform accelerated transfers to cloud object storage. 9 4 Appendices 4.1 Using NAS Share as Media Shuttle Portal Storage for On-Premises Deployment The following procedure can be used to configure a NAS share for Media Shuttle portal storage: Prerequisites: If the Media Shuttle storage server is not part of a Windows domain, then a Local user account with administrative privilege must have already been created with same username & password as an account with access to the NAS server. Procedure: 1. Open Windows Services Control Panel 2. Select the Signiant Media Shuttle Process Controller 3. Edit the service Properties and click on the Log On tab. 4. Select This account If the Media Shuttle storage server is part of a Windows domain: 5. Enter the domain user to be used for NAS access (e.g. domain\userid). Note that this userid requires local Administrator privilege on the Media Shuttle storage server. If the Media Shuttle storage server is not part of a Windows domain: 5. Enter the local user to be used for NAS access. This userid must exactly match in userid and password with a userid that has access to the NAS server (which itself may be on a Windows domain). This local userid must also have Administrator privilege. 6. Enter the password for this userid. 7. Click OK. 8. Restart the service and verify that it starts Signiant Inc. Page 9 4/21/2017

10 9. Repeat steps 1-8 above for the Signiant Media Shuttle Web Server service. The same userid/password must be used as for the Process Controller service. 10. On the Media Shuttle portal s Storage tab (on manage.mediashuttle.com), specify the path to the portal storage using a UNC path. i.e.: \\server\share\folder 2017 Signiant Inc. Page 10 4/21/2017

11 4.2 Configuring On-Premises Storage Servers in a Load Balanced Arrangement Configuring 2 or more Storage Servers for load balancing is very simple: 1. Install the storage servers. Note that they should be heterogenous systems (all Windows or all Linux) 2. On the cloud-managed Storage tab, assign both (or more) servers to the same portal. 3. Ensure that the path to the common portal storage is accessible on all servers assigned to the portal Signiant Inc. Page 11 4/21/2017

12 4.3 Specifying Advanced Network Settings for On-Premises Storage Server There may be scenarios where it is necessary to configure special network settings for an on-premises storage server. These scenarios may include: Load-balancing firewalls are being used on the Internet link (in conjunction with NAT) and this has caused an incorrect external/public IP address to be determined for the storage server at install time. Multiple NICs exist on the storage server and the wrong one has been chosen when attempting to automatically determine the server s external/public IP address. In some network environments it may be desirable to configure a host in the network DMZ as a secure relay point for Media Shuttle transfer traffic. For details on how to setup relay servers, please refer to the following Signiant Knowledge Base article: It is possible to achieve higher performance for Signiant Accelerated (3-star) transfers by configuring a UDP port range rather than a single UDP port. For more information regarding using multiple ports for UDP transfers, please refer to the following Signiant Knowledge Base article: To configure network settings for the storage server under any of these scenarios, do the following: 1. 14 4.4 Specifying Network Interface on a Multi-NIC On-Premises Storage Server On systems that have multiple NICs, it may be necessary to instruct Media Shuttle to use a particular interface. To explicitly specify the NIC to use, perform the following procedure: 1. Log onto the Media Shuttle server 2. Open a command prompt 3. CD to the install folder: cd C:\Program Files\Signiant Media Shuttle 4. CD to the bin\agent\bin subfolder: cd bin\agent\bin 5. Run the dds_admin command:.\dds_admin 6. Enter the password 7. This will give you a command prompt like: > 8. Run the command: set ipint ##.##.##.## (where the # s represent the IP of the NIC) 9. Type quit to exit the dds_admin utility 10. Restart all Signiant Media Shuttle services using the Services Control Panel.
