Brokering Desktop Connections Sentral provides connection brokering that allows zero client users to log in from anywhere and be directed to specific centralized Blade PCs. Rather than move computer equipment from place to place as the employees change locations, users simply broker their connection to their centralized Blade PC from wherever their new office is located. Sentral's Dynamic Allocation feature maps groups of users to pools of centralized resources. For rapid restoration of service in mission critical environments, Sentral provides the network administrator with the ability to automatically route the user to a different secondary source in the event of a primary source failure. The goal of a CDI project is to move the computing resources (PCs) to the secure, climate controlled datacenter, and use stateless zero client devices at the desktops to connect peripheral devices such as displays, keyboards, and mice. Sentral provides a number of capabilities to enable CDI: Sentral discovers the host platforms and the zero clients in the CDI project, which is the first step in identifying the components allocated to the solution. Sentral dynamically brokers connections from zero clients to host computing platforms such as R Series Blade PCs, A Series Blade PCs and M Series. Sentral pushes PCoIP firmware updates en masse or to specific groups of zero clients, if needed, from a single source. And Sentral pushes software updates to the host platforms, as well. Since the host computing platforms are centrally located, Sentral provides network administrators with remote management capabilities such as health monitoring, power recycling, event alerts, lost session tracking, and more. Sentral s source routing capability delivers business continuity for mission critical operations that is not possible with distributed PCs and not offered by other connection brokering products. 4 2 of 4 4/1/2013 4:37 PM What s the purpose of brokering a connection? Zero clients are stateless, with no processor, memory, or storage. When a user logs in, his zero client sends a request to his designated host computer to establish the connection over PCoIP. That connection request/acceptance sequence is called brokering. Brokering has a number of benefits: 4. Moves/Adds/Changes Brokering allows the re-mapping of connection routes. This means that people can change their physical locations without having to physically move their PCs. They can log in to their Blade PC hosted desktops from zero clients in different offices or temporarily connect to their Blade PCs from a conference room location, for instance. In highly collaborative settings such as financial trading floors, this ability to connect to a specific host platform from anywhere on the trading floor saves $1000s per day by eliminating the need to relocate powerful physical machines to where the trader has moved. Instead, traders move wherever they want, and their systems stay put. More end points than hosts Brokering creates the opportunity to install more end point connection stations than hosts. In a hospital, for example, nurses stations can be set up with zero clients at multiple points in the building, allowing the nurses to roam from floor to floor and access the information located on their own Blade PCs. Rather than using dedicated PCs at every station, the zero clients are essentially shared access points producing cost-savings and work flexibility. User based and device based brokering Sentral allows both user-based and device-based brokering. This capability allows administrators to set up a combination of specific and shared resources, as needed. Specific routes for user based brokering may be mandated for security purposes; device based brokering may be desired for isolating shared resources to specific users. With device based brokering, kiosks can be created to allow a number of viewing points to access a specific host resource. For example, zero clients can be used at greeter information stations at dozens of entry points in a large building complex, all accessing a building directory listing. Or, as another example, this feature can be used for updating information on flight information displays in airports. Shared resources Specialized application high end workstations are sometimes set up as shared resources. For example, in a hospital environment, a specific MRI or oncology program may require very fast CPU/GPU processing for rendering graphics output. That machine may only be used occasionally, so rather than purchase one machine per doctor, with Sentral s connection brokering ability, a network administrator can give each doctor his or her own zero client with access to his/her Blade PC and a drop down menu selection to broker a connection to the shared resource. The benefit is that the administrator can set up a lesser number of shared resources to reduce costs. Is Sentral the only broker for ClearCube systems? VMware Horizon View can also be used to broker connections. In ClearCube s Centralized and Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure (CVDI) projects, Horizon View brokers connections to both physical machines and virtual machines on ClearCube SmartVDI systems. However, in CDI projects, where all machines are physical, Sentral s brokering has a number of advantages over Horizon View: The biggest advantage is overall cost savings. Horizon View requires a license per user, plus the customer must install a VMware infrastructure consisting of vsphere and Horizon Server /Connection Manager on separate machines to enable Horizon View to function. In contrast, Sentral s license installs as a standalone management package without requiring the virtualized backend infrastructure.

5 3 of 4 4/1/2013 4:37 PM A second advantage is the breadth of platforms that Sentral supports. Sentral can broker connections to Linux host platforms. This is especially important in markets such as command and control, CAD, and other areas where Linux workstation operating systems are used for security, performance, or application compatibility purposes. Horizon View cannot broker a Linux connection. Why is Sentral valuable to network administrators? Host platform management ClearCube host platforms are typically thought of as set-and-forget, located in the datacenter out of the network administrator s sight. However, Sentral provides management capabilities that include discovery, inventory, asset management, health monitoring and alerts to allow the administrator to remotely manage his resources without having to be in the datacenter. 4. Sentral discovers the type of host platform (R,A, or M Series) and the type of PCoIP host adapter (dual or quad) installed. For asset management, Sentral extracts property profiles (settings, configurations, available drive capacity) about the host platforms. Sentral monitors the conditions of the host platform s components such as fan rotation, temperature, power, installed applications, processes running, and overall blade status. In the event of an exceeded threshold or failure, Sentral sends notification to the network administrator via or SNMP traps. Historical logs are kept for events. PCoIP traffic can be adversely affected by heavy periods of network traffic. Sentral is the only management program that keeps track of and reports lost PCoIP sessions to the administrator. This function can help the administrator troubleshoot and isolate network problems affecting specific users and adjust bandwidth to reduce or eliminate session loss. Source routing For rapid restoration of service in mission critical environments, Sentral provides the network administrator with the ability to automatically route the user to a different secondary source in the event of a primary source failure. With hot spares allocated, Sentral can be configured to switch a failed user to an active spare. The way this works is that spare machines are set aside for an environment by tagging a group as spare. This tells Sentral that it needs to allocate from this group only in the instance where the primary resource is not available. Sentral agents are installed on Blade PCs that are polling to the server about their connection state. If a machine stops polling, then the server determines it to be no longer available for connections and thus results in the allocation being retrieved from the spare group/pool. With folder redirection as part of the login script, folder locations on the network can be remapped when a user logs in from a spare Blade PC. This assumes that all users in the group have the same user profile. Third party tools like Liquidware s Profile Unity can also be used to maintain user profile portability from one machine to another when a switch happens. This feature is highly valued in e911, command and control, and financial services areas because users can immediately resuming work on secondary host platforms without having to wait for a technician to repair or replace their primary systems. This physical switching capability also buys time for the administrator to fix the problem without the stress of having an operator not being able to work. Remote power control Power can be cycled on the host platforms through Sentral in the event of an operating system lock up. In addition, with R Series blades, the user can initiate a hard power up/down from his zero client desktop device.

IPMI messages regarding system temperatures, voltages, power supplies, etc. are sent to Sentral s management console.
