4 Introduction Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) 2007/2007 R2 offers end to end enterprise communication based on technologies such as instant messaging, conferencing, and software powered Voice over IP (VoIP) solution. It integrates completely with messaging and telephony infrastructures to provide a single identity based Unified Communication (UC) solution. All the voice communication in a UC infrastructure is enabled through Enterprise Voice functionality. A UC solution encompasses all the aspects of communication in an enterprise environment, and the availability of such an infrastructure is extremely critical for businesses to avoid loss in productivity and revenue. Enterprise applications which facilitate internal and external communication such as messaging, conferencing, and telephony require availability assurance. Thus it becomes critical to ensure availability of infrastructure hosting the Unified Communication solution. Discussing the high availability requirements of a complete Unified Communication solution will be outside the scope of this document but it will highlight some of the methodologies ensuring the availability of Enterprise Voice component in an OCS deployment.
5 Enterprise Voice Enterprise Voice in Unified Communications solution allows users to have Voice over IP (VoIP) functionality throughout the enterprise system. It also allows the integration of Office Communication Server in PBX or telephony infrastructure for PSTN connectivity. The core functionality of Enterprise Voice mainly depends on the OCS Front End servers and some components connecting to the PSTN environment. Unified Messaging (installed through Exchange Server 2007) is also considered a part of Enterprise Voice when voice messaging, call answering, Outlook Voice Access, and auto attendant services are deployed in the setup. Enterprise Voice is activated through Office Communication Front End Server where the Inbound and Outbound Routing components are configured to translate and route the calls for Enterprise users. The Inbound Routing component handles internal or incoming calls and does the appropriate routing based on policies set for answering and forwarding. The Outbound Routing component handles calls to the PSTN users through IP PBX or SIP trunk. The voice policies and phone normalization rules configured on Front End Server define the routing infrastructure for an OCS environment. Besides routing components, the Enterprise Voice infrastructure in OCS 2007 requires Mediation Server and Media Gateways to provide interoperability with the PSTN world as shown in Figure 1. If the SIP trunk from a service provider is deployed (which is possible with OCS 2007 R2 edition), then the Media and PBX gateways may not be required. Only the OCS 2007 R2 deployments allow the flexibility of connecting the Mediation Server directly to a SIP trunk (from the provider) for PSTN access. The decisive factor is the type of OCS deployment that is being used. Selecting a particular type of deployment depends on various factors including the cost & size of setup, availability, and manageability of IP PBX infrastructure. Enterprise Voice uses SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) for setting up the connection and then uses RTP (Real Time Transport Protocol) for transferring the voice media. When an Enterprise Voice user initiates a call from an Office Communicator 2007 client to a PSTN user, the appropriate routing rules are invoked on the Front End server, and phone normalization takes place. The call is then forwarded through Mediation Server and Media gateways for media transformation and finally delivered to the PSTN user. The following sections briefly define the role of Mediation server and Media gateway in providing the Enterprise Voice integration with PSTN.
6 Figure 1: Enterprise voice setup with PSTN connectivity Mediation Technology The Mediation technology in Office Communication Server 2007/2007 R2 provides integration of Enterprise Voice with the Media gateway and IP PBX. It basically provides translation and compatibility between secured and standard based SIP transport. Microsoft Real time audio protocol translation from
7 standard codecs also occurs through the same Mediation server. The connection of Mediation server on the Enterprise Voice side is set through secured TLS and on the Media gateway side through TCP or TLS. The Mediation server is typically deployed on a separate server inside the corporate firewall. Some gateway vendors offer hybrid combinations of Mediation server and Media gateway (discussed in the next section) for better deployment and management. Media Gateways Media gateways are third party devices that do the voice protocol conversion from circuit switched network to IP based network and seamlessly make PBX communication SIP compliant. The protocol conversion occurs through standard based codecs. The converted VoIP (Voice over IP) traffic is then fed through Mediation server to the Enterprise Voice infrastructure. Office Communication Server 2007 supports three types of media gateways in combination with Mediation server deployment. Selecting a particular type of gateway depends on the topology and geographic distribution of an organization. Note: If OCS 2007 R2 is deployed using SIP trunk from the provider, then the Media gateways are not required. Basic Media Gateway The Basic media gateway is a traditional standalone VoIP gateway which requires Mediation server to forward and translate calls to the Enterprise Voice clients. The basic media gateway and Mediation server are separately configured and managed. Hybrid Basic Media Gateway The Hybrid Media gateway merges the Basic Media gateway and Mediation server on a single computer. It can be considered a Basic media gateway card installed on a Mediation server box. Both functionalities in a single location provide ease of deployment and management. Advanced Media Gateway The Advanced Media gateway is also deployed on a single server but it is different from Hybrid Media gateway in a way that it combines the functionalities of both Basic Media gateway and Mediation technology and presents as a single application to the administrator. With the complete native support for VoIP conversion and SIP/media translation, the Advanced Media gateway can communicate directly with Office Communication Server deployment.
8 High Availability Considerations Voice Communication in OCS 2007/2007 R2 depends on the availability of Enterprise voice components, server software, and voice clients. To avoid single point of failures, OCS server roles and components are deployed in a highly available environment. The internal core components of Enterprise Voice are mainly dependent on the availability of OCS Front End infrastructure. They are deployed in Enterprise pools with load balancers to distribute the load and provide high availability. More details on providing high availability for Front End Server and OCS infrastructure in general can be found in the following whitepaper: Building a Highly available Unified Communications Infrastructure with Microsoft Office Communications Server The Mediation Server and Media gateways linking Enterprise Voice infrastructure with PSTN are also configured for high availability to eliminate single points of failure. Deploying multiple Mediation servers for high availability in the configuration does not necessarily require a hardware load balancer. The servers rely on the Microsoft internal software load balancing mechanism to distribute voice sessions. The load is distributed using Domain Name System (DNS) round robin technique between multiple Mediation servers on the same network. Besides maintaining high availability and load balancing, the other avenues where multiple Mediation and gateway combinations are deployed involve increasing SIP trunks for large enterprise users, distributing traffic to multiple office locations and maintaining better network performance. The number of gateways deployed should be able to handle all users as well as provide redundancy to hardware failures. The Mediation servers and Media gateways can be connected in various configurations depending on the specific requirements of an organization. The most common architectures are described below: One Media Gateway to One Mediation Server In this topology, one Media gateway is paired with one Mediation server, so there are as many Media gateways as Mediation servers. Multiples of these one to one setups can be deployed in the same network to support the desired number of users as well as maintain redundancy (as shown in Fig. 2). The Media gateways are fed through T1 trunks coming from the PBX. This architecture is considered the most recommended deployment because it provides complete redundancy of the setup for both locally and geographically distributed sites. If a Media gateway or Mediation server fails in a route/channel, the next available route in line takes the calls. In these scenarios, the on going call session on a failed link does not fail over but the redundant setup ensures that a newly initiated session can be handled by the next available route. The next route can be located at the local site or the remote site depending on the specific deployment. The outbound traffic on multiple Mediation servers is distributed in a DNS round robin fashion and the inbound traffic on the Media gateways is distributed through an IP PBX defined load balancing mechanism. The IP PBX holds the entries for all the Media gateways being served in a setup and if any one of the gateway fails, it routes the traffic to the next gateway.

10 One Media Gateway to Multiple Mediation Servers Some Media gateways are equipped with handling multiple T1 trunks from the IP PBX. Some are also capable of sending SIP data to multiple servers. In this topology, one Media gateway serves multiple Mediation servers and distributes the load using the configured routing algorithm. Each SIP channel on the Media gateway connects independently to a Mediation server (as shown in Fig. 3) and is responsible for a complete end to end session. The outbound traffic on multiple Mediation servers is balanced using DNS round robin, and the inbound traffic is solely dependent on the Media gateway routing mechanism unlike in the one to one topology (defined in previous section) where IP PBX takes care of the routing. 11 Although the topology of one Media gateway to multiple Mediation servers provides load balancing of sessions, it also poses the following limitations: a) The topology is not suitable for geographically distributed environments such as an organization with multiple office sites. b) Media gateway is a single point of failure in the configuration. If the geographical distribution is not a concern for an organization, then limitation (b) mentioned above is usually removed by deploying redundant Media gateways. Some gateway vendors provide fully builtin redundant architecture in a box (as shown in Fig. 4). In such a design, one gateway works in active mode and the other in passive mode. During any failures on active hardware, all the sessions are seamlessly failed over to the standby gateway and retain the communication without any interruption. 12 Conclusion The Enterprise Voice feature is dependent on various components of Office Communication Server 2007 and telephony infrastructure. High availability for each of these components can be ensured via various methods as outlined above. Choice of implementation may depend on various factors such as cost, complexity, and availability levels achieved. Business IT departments should carefully assess their high availability requirements before deploying Office Communications Server 2007 and the associated telephony components. In addition to Enterprise Voice, the Office communication Server 2007/2007 R2 infrastructure offers other advanced features such as enhanced presence, conferencing, Live Meeting, and much more. Dell PowerEdge Servers, Dell PowerVault, Dell EqualLogic, and Dell/EMC Storage offer a suitable platform for hosting the OCS 2007/OCS 2007 R2 infrastructure. Dell offers Microsoft SQL Server solutions for hosting the OCS 2007 back end databases and also offers complementary Microsoft Exchange Server solutions for hosting e mail. These solutions provide a comprehensive platform for implementing an OCS 2007 infrastructure with required availability features.
