VNXe Total Value Pack Includes all three protection software suites and the Security and Compliance Suite (the VNXe3100 exclusively supports this package). Solution purpose The purpose of this solution is to protect data by using array-based replication technologies in a ROBO solution built on EMC VNX and VNXe platforms. The solution is intended to provide a high degree of scalability by having a large number of replication sessions replicating large amounts of changed data from multiple edge sites to a single core site. This reference architecture validates the performance of all aspects of the solution and provides guidelines for building similar solutions. This reference architecture is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to every aspect of the data protection in a ROBO Environment. The business challenge Today, many organizations have numerous geographically dispersed sites that create, process, and store data locally. A loss of such data could result in economic loss for the organization. The data must be continually protected to ensure the smooth functioning of an organization. The data must be protected against intentional and unintentional erasure by a user, as well as site-level disasters that could render the whole array inaccessible or unusable. The most common scenario where this is a risk is a business that maintains many remote offices, or branch offices, along with a much smaller number of central or core sites. Because of the prevalence of this scenario, the configuration is often referred to as Remote Office / Branch Office, or ROBO. Protecting the data and monitoring all the sites in such an environment is challenging for organizations. The technology solution By deploying EMC VNX storage arrays at a centralized location (core site) and EMC VNXe storage arrays at the many geographically dispersed locations (edge sites), customers can use the array-based replication feature to synchronize the data from any edge site back to the core. In addition, EMC Snapsure technology can provide another layer of protection by taking point-in-time snapshots of the data at either the core or edge sites. The snapshots can be restored on an as-needed basis. Unisphere Remote provides users with a single interface that can manage more than one VNXe storage array. This enables the IT administrator to easily monitor all the VNXe arrays at the edge sites that are replicating data to the core. This makes the entire environment easier to manage. The solution benefits By deploying this solution, customers can protect data at all their geographically dispersed branch offices from a centralized location. To add a second layer of protection, data can also be protected locally at each branch office. With the help of Unisphere Remote, all the VNXes at the branch offices can be monitored through a single interface to make maintenance of the whole environment fast and efficient. 8 Solution architecture Architecture diagram Figure 1 shows the overall physical architecture of the solution. Local Data (CIFS) EMC VNXe Edge Sites Local Data (CIFS) EMC VNXe WAN EMC VNX Core Site Figure 1. Physical architecture Reference architecture overview The solution consists of the following components. EMC VNX 5700 Provides destination storage at the core over the NAS protocol. The core VNX has its Data Movers connected to the edge VNXe systems through network switches. The VNX has a standby Data Mover which is kept as an extra Data Mover in case any of the primaries fail. EMC VNXe 3300 Provides source storage at the edge over the NAS protocol. Each VNXe is connected over a WAN to the VNX Data Mover. Data Protection in a ROBO Environment Reference Architecture 8

VNX storage layout Figure 2 shows the VNX storage layout for this solution. Figure 2. VNX storage layout VNX storage layout overview A building block approach is used to set up replication sessions. A building block consists of 30 SAS drives (2 X 15 drive shelves) and 10 NL-SAS drives. Each building block is able to accommodate 20 replication sessions. Figure 2 shows the layout of a single building block for the core site. Each SAS drive shelf is configured into three 4+1 RAID 5 groups. Each shelf holds the destination file system for 10 replication sessions. The SavVols associated with 20 destination file systems are provisioned on the 10 NL-SAS drives, which are configured into a single 8+2 RAID 6 group on a single shelf. This layout was repeated for each set of 20 replication sessions that was deployed. The solution was validated with 100 concurrent replication sessions that used drive 300-GB SAS shelves and 5 2-TB NL-SAS shelves. Note: The drive layout shown in Figure 2 is what the solution was validated on. The actual layout may vary based on customer requirements. VNX network layout overview In order to meet the high bandwidth demand that is created by 100 replication sessions sending data to the VNX, both VNX Data Movers had two two-port 10 GbE I/O modules installed on them. The four ports on the two I/O modules were configured with link aggregation to balance the load equally between the available ports. To maintain the recovery point objective (RPO), it is important that the WAN has sufficient bandwidth available for the rate of data change within the environment. Data Protection in a ROBO Environment Reference Architecture 9

VNXe storage layout Figure 3 shows the VNXe storage layout for this solution. Figure 3. VNXe storage layout VNXe storage layout overview VNXe 3300 systems were used as the edge systems in this solution. Each VNXe was generating the load of 10 VNXe systems, and therefore had 10 CIFS shares provisioned on it. Thirty SAS drives were used on each VNXe system. Out of the 30 drives, 22 were 300 GB in size, and 8 were 600 GB in size. Twenty-eight drives were configured into a system-defined 6+1 RAID 5 performance pool and two drives (one 600 GB and one 300 GB) were reserved as hot spares. Note: The drive layout shown in Figure 3 is what the solution was validated on. The actual layout may vary based on customer requirements. VNXe network layout overview In a ROBO environment the network bandwidth available for replication is likely to be limited by the type of WAN connection available to the site. While it is unlikely that replication through a WAN will overload a single 1 GbE port, it is possible that local users of the system may need more aggregate bandwidth. There are two ways to increase the aggregate bandwidth: Add 10 GbE connections to the VNXe. Use LACP to combine the 1 GbE or 10 GbE links on the VNXe into a link aggregate. 11 Key components Introduction The VNX series This section describes the key components of the ROBO solution. EMC VNX unified storage platform EMC VNXe unified storage platforms Unisphere Remote Array-based Snapshots Array-based Replication The Hardware and software resources section provides details on all the components that make up the solution. The VNX series is a dedicated network server optimized for file and block storage access that delivers high-end features in a scalable, easy-to-use package. The VNX series delivers a single-box block and file solution, which offers a central management point for distributed environments. This makes it possible to dynamically grow, share, and cost-effectively manage multiprotocol file systems and provide multiprotocol block access. By using the sophisticated file-locking mechanisms of VNX for file, administrators can take advantage of simultaneous support for NFS and CIFS protocols to allow Windows and Linux/UNIX clients to share files. VNX for block is available for high-bandwidth or latency-sensitive applications. The VNX series arrays are powerful systems that are capable of handling many simultaneous replication sessions. Performance and ease of management for replication sessions are the key characteristics that make the VNX series array perfect for deployment at the core site. The VNXe series The VNXe series is targeted to the IT generalist in the SMB environment. The VNXe array combines the advanced features found in larger EMC platforms with unique application-driven wizards that simplify the storage provisioning process. The VNXe series delivers a single-box block and file solution that offers a central management point for distributed environments. This makes it possible to dynamically grow, share, and cost-effectively manage multiprotocol file systems and provide multiprotocol block access. By using the sophisticated file-locking mechanisms for file access, administrators can take advantage of simultaneous support for NFS and CIFS protocols to allow Windows and Linux/UNIX clients to share files. They can use iscsi block for high-bandwidth or latency-sensitive applications. These characteristics make the VNXe an ideal storage array to serve as an edge node within the ROBO environment. Unisphere Remote Unisphere Remote is a network application that enables administrators to remotely monitor status, activity, and resources on multiple VNXe systems that reside on a common network. The Unisphere Remote server runs within a VMware virtual environment that includes at least one ESX server. Unisphere Remote also obtains aggregate status, alert, and storage usage information from the VNXe systems on the network. Data Protection in a ROBO Environment Reference Architecture 11

Unisphere Remote plays an important role in the ROBO environment by providing a single interface to monitor the health and status of the VNXe systems at the edge sites. It simplifies day-to-day tasks and makes the environment easy to maintain. Array-based snapshots EMC Snapsure technology allows users to create and manage checkpoints, which are point-in-time, logical images of a production file system (PFS). SnapSure uses a copy on first modify principle. A PFS consists of blocks. When a block within the PFS is modified, a copy that contains the original contents of the block is saved to a separate volume called the SavVol. Subsequent changes made to the same block in the PFS are not copied into the SavVol. The original blocks from the PFS in the SavVol and the unchanged PFS blocks remaining in the PFS are read by SnapSure according to a bitmap and block map data-tracking structure. These blocks combine to provide a complete point-intime image called a Snapshot. Array-based replication Array-based replication allows administrators to create and manage replication sessions, with each session producing a read-only point-in-time copy of a given source object at a designated destination. Replication sessions, created in Unisphere, are characterized by an architecture based on snapshot/checkpoint technology, asynchronous transfer to the destination, and support for file system and iscsi LUN source objects. Data Protection in a ROBO Environment Reference Architecture 12

High availability and failover Introduction Switching over If an edge site becomes unavailable because of a disaster or scheduled outage, ROBO environments provide multiple methods to bring the data from the edge site back online at the core VNX. A switchover is a planned reversal of the replication session, where the destination synchronizes with the source and the replication session stops with no data loss. The status of the destination object becomes read/write and the status of the source object becomes read-only. If there is a planned outage at any of the edge VNXe sites because of local maintenance activities, a switchover can bring the data online at the core without disrupting client access. Reverse the direction of the replication to restore changed data or the original configuration. Failing over A failover is a reversal of the replication session in response to an unplanned emergency scenario where the source has become unavailable. A failover carries the risk of data loss. After the failover operation, the status of the destination object becomes read/write. When communication is re-established between the source and destination, the status of the source object becomes read-only. If a natural disaster affects any edge site, the data can be brought online at the core site. However, only data up to the last sync between the edge and the core will be available at the core. Reverse the direction of the replication to restore changed data or the original configuration. Data Protection in a ROBO Environment Reference Architecture 13
