Red Hat High Availability vs. Steeleye Protection Suite for Linux A Competitive Analysis August 2012 Red Hat High Availability Add-On is compared to Steeleye Protection Suite for Linux. A summary of the performance of each product in important functional areas is presented.

Red Hat High Availability vs. Steeleye Protection Suite for Linux A Competitive Analysis August 2012 Overview Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 (RHEL) was released on June 21, The High Availability solution for Red Hat is the combination of the Red Hat High Availability Add-On and the Red Hat Resilient Storage Add-On. SIOS offers the Steeleye Protection Suite (SPS) for Linux (v8) including LifeKeeper for high availability, DataKeeper for replication, and a collection of Application Recovery Kits (ARKs) for mission-critical business applications. An analysis of the effectiveness of each product in providing high-availability and disaster recovery for business-critical information systems is conducted and results included. Red Hat Enterprise Linux Initial Impressions At first look, one expects Red Hat Enterprise Linux to have a comprehensive suite of High Availability support. For storage, Red Hat offers the Resilient Storage Add-On, which brings the Clustered Logical Volume Manager (CLVM) and the Red Hat Global File System 2 (GFS2). These storage add-ons together with the cluster infrastructure support provide the ability to cluster Red-Hat systems for high availability. Looking deeper under the covers, one finds that Red Hat has pulled together a number of disparate initiatives and attempted to pull them together into a cohesive offer. This resulting offer is missing key components of a high-availability solution. In addition, despite layering a GUI interface over the various parts of the solution, Red Hat High Availability still appears to be a cobbled together set of parts that are being coerced into working together rather than a well-integrated suite that was designed to work together from the start. Details on missed integration points and missing components are highlighted in this report. Throughout the documentation for Red Hat High Availability Add-on, there are numerous warnings for configurations that require consultation with Red Hat before being supported and that are in technology preview status meaning not officially supported by Red Hat. It is easy to get the impression that the Clustering solution from Red Hat is very much a work-in-progress and is not yet ready for prime time. Overview 1

Pricing and 5 Year Total Cost of Ownership Red Hat High Availability Add-On requires Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and, for cluster file system support, the Red Hat Resilient Storage Add-On. The standard subscription for Red Hat Enterprise Server is $799 per server (2 socket support). The Red Hat High Availability Add-On is $399 per server (2 sockets or less), the Resilient Storage Add-On is $799 per server for a 2-socket server. This equates to $2400 per year for a minimal (2 processor socket) pair of servers, or $12,000 over a five-year period, not including RHEL pricing. If data replication is needed to provide shared-nothing clustering and remote disaster recovery, customers will have to plan to manage 2 suppliers and will pay another $3,000 per node per year for support. This brings the solution to $42,000. With server vendors providing up to eight sockets in a single 2U rack server, this solution can get expensive quickly, rising to $78,000 in subscription and services costs over 5 years. The additional operational cost of managing multiple vendors, managing updates as Red Hat continues to revamp their clustering offer, etc. have not been included in this analysis. Table 1: Two server cluster, 2 sockets or less. Note Steeleye offer includes Data Replication. Product Offering 3 Year Software & Services 5 Year Software & Services Steeleye Protection Suite $10,675 $12,950 RHHA + 3 rd Party Replication $25,200 $42,000 RHHA alone (No DR) $7,200 $12,000 Table 2: Two Server Cluster, 8 Sockets Each (2U Unit). Steeleye includes Data Replication. Product Offering 3 Year Software & Services 5 Year Software & Services Steeleye Protection Suite $10,675 $12,950 RHHA + 3 rd Party Replication $46,800 $78,000 RHHA alone (No DR) $28,800 $48,000 Application Recovery Support Steeleye Protection Suite for Linux includes a set of Application Recovery Kits (ARKs) for most frequently deployed applications that require high levels of availability. The Steeleye supported ARKs provide both quick frequently-executed checks of application health and much deeper, more specific testing of application health (called deep checks). If an anomaly is detected, the ARK is able to pursue actions for local recovery of the service/application. In many cases, this recovery can resolve the problem and avoid a failover to a backup node. Pricing and 5 Year Total Cost of Ownership 2

Red Hat High Availability includes a list of resource parameters that vary in complexity. Most are simple tests for a running system daemon/service only. Many failures will not be detected at all using this testing mode. Steeleye ARKs are very well documented. They are turnkey solutions that automatically configure and integrate where possible, requiring little manual configuration. They are robust, deeply-integrated components for detecting and recovering application failures, in contrast to the simpler HA services in Red Hat. Both solutions cover common databases, enterprise apps, file sharing solutions, etc. Steeleye ARKs for complex, high-performance enterprise solutions like Oracle and SAP are very robust, deeply integrated solutions. Steeleye LifeKeeper offers a framework for creating custom ARKs for protecting custom applications or additional enterprise applications. Cluster Functionality Red Hat High Availability and its required additional optional software packages enable similar clustering capability to LifeKeeper, but are missing WAN-based disaster recover via failover and data replication and are, for all practical purposes, limited to a single site for clustering. Supported Cluster Configurations Steeleye Protection Suite supports datacenter clustering, metro area clustering, WAN-extended geoclustering or stretch clustering. Steeleye Protection Suite also supports shared-nothing clusters, eliminating a requirement for expensive and complex enterprise SAN solutions and disk arrays. Steeleye provides excellent data replication ensuring that failover can occur to remote nodes extended over WANs. Steeleye supports 32 nodes in a cluster. Red Hat High Availability supports 8 unless the customer engages Red Hat for an architecture review in order to have up to 16 nodes conditionally supported. This signals some confidence issues in the Red Hat clustering software scalability. Red Hat is, for all practical purposes, limited to single-site datacenter clusters with shared storage. Red Hat s supported clusters must endure the overhead and complexity of cluster file systems and lock managers. They must use potentially problematic multicast transmission for cluster communications (per Red Hat documentation). The preferred fencing approach is hardware power fencing. Latency requirements for clusters to work at all are < 2 milliseconds. Cluster Functionality 3

The SIOS SPS for Linux solution is simpler, much more flexible, and is able to employ less expensive storage systems, simpler and less expensive networks, and simpler and less expensive networking equipment. The ability to leverage the DataKeeper data replication solution to enable offsite WAN-extended nodes for failover and disaster recovery is a big plus for Steeleye Protection Suite. Cluster Communications Primary communications between cluster elements are doing via multicast protocol. Many network equipment vendors set multicast to disabled by default. Red Hat warns of potential issues with network equipment multicast support. In particular, routers may take a long time to learn multicast addresses and add delays to failover times. Alternative UDP unicast communications can be used but this option is not supported or recommended by Red Hat. The possible workaround, UDP, can be unreliable. Red Hat Quorum devices must not be JBOD and thus require expensive RAID or SAN hardware. Cluster Management Cluster management in Red Hat can be difficult as the qdisk and cman timeout values may require trial and error to configure correctly. Network latency and variability in latency seem to be a problem, even in LAN environments. Cluster nodes, services, and configuration are automatically versioned in Red Hat, a nice touch for being able to revert to previous configurations easily. Cluster Storage Red Hat High Availability Add-On requires Red-Hat Resilient Storage for the cluster volume manager and the cluster file system (GFS2 Global File System 2). Red Hat does not support a shared-nothing configuration. Essentially, this drives the requirement for expensive shared storage arrays and additional software/support licensing for Red Hat Resilient Storage. Red Hat Resilient Storage is twice the license price of Red Hat High Availability Add-On alone. Red Hat warns that performance may suffer on a clustered file system. Most applications are not designed to efficiently share clustered file system resources and there will be an overhead for the extra layer and locks required to implement clustered GFS2 file systems. The convenience of being able to share file system trees versus logical volumes may not be work the performance impact and complexity. Complexity in file systems may also lead to bugs/errors that may not be welcome in a high-availability environment. Cluster Functionality 4

Steeleye Protection Suite supports all types of storage configurations, including SAN, iscsi, JBOD, etc. In addition, DataKeeper can eliminate the requirement for identical storage systems in multiple locations and can eliminate costly licenses for SAN-based replication. Data Replication Red Hat High Availability does not support data replication. A customer must buy and use a third party solution for data replication. While some solutions exist, Red Hat does not support them. If a customer experiences difficulty using Red Hat High Availability and a third-party solution, the customer must depend on both support organizations cooperating to fix the problem. The best-known third-party replication solution for Red Hat is LINBIT s DRDB-based offering. DRDB is an open source project managed by LINBIT. Support for LINBIT for the DRDB-based cluster stack is an additional $3000 per year per node. Red-Hat does not support clustering over a WAN link or to a remote Disaster Recovery directly as third-party SAN or Array-based replication products would be required. Logging, Alerting, and Reporting Both products lack integration into reporting suites, but both provide good logging and SNMP alerting. Steeleye includes a message catalog and structured logging in SPS for Linux 8.0, enabling integrating of reporting via log parsing. Operating System Support Red Hat High Availability Add-On is only available on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 and higher, requiring an upgrade for many. Steeleye is available on Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5 and higher, SUSE Linux versions 10 and 11, Oracle Enterprise Linux 5, and CentOS versions 5 and 6. Red Hat High Availability is essential lock-in to the official Red Hat software suite only. Documentation Data Replication 5

The Steeleye Protection Suite components are very well documented, with planning guides, installation guides, and technical documentation available on the SIOS web site in attractive web and PDF formats. Documents are well indexed. In particular, the Application Recovery Kits (ARKs) are well documented with release notes and technical documentation for each kit. The Red Hat documentation provides overview-level information but does not get into detail, especially in the area of application recover. The documentation does not even cover the specific HA service support list for enterprise applications. Much of the core system management and administration are done through a weak user interface or though command line operations. Various components are disjoint and are not similar in structure of commands and operation. For example, there are more than 10 disjoint commands, each with its own man page that must be mastered for cluster configuration and management. Many of them have overlapping responsibilities and side effects. The documentation frequently punts to the man pages. Further complicating the documentation in Red Hat are frequent warnings that certain configurations are technology previews and require a consultation with Red Hat before support will be honored. Installation Installation of Red Hat High Availability Add-On and Steeleye Protection Suite for Linux were similar. Both are command line driven and use the package management resources of the OS properly. User Experience Setup, administration, and management of clusters in Red Hat is done via a web application called Conga. Conga is similar to older form-based web pages from the 1990s. Conga seems to be built around editing properties that are saved in the cluster.conf file. It does not offer much in the way of at a glance or single pane of glass management and operations One advantage of Conga is that communications between the user s web browser and the luci server (web server delivering the Conga UI) is done via secure http (https). Furthermore, the luci server communicates with all other servers to be added to the cluster via a secure connection. Authentication is done once and then credentials are used to support all future communications with nodes. The LifeKeeper and DataKeeper GUIs are better organized and provide much more useful information at once on the display. The LifeKeeper and DataKeeper GUIs feel snappy relative to the Conga Installation 6

interface. This is likely due to old form-based web interfaces and would not be an issue with AJAX and modern web programming. Virtualization Support As of Red Hat 6.0, the only virtualization environment supported by Red Hat is Red Hat KVM. This is true both as a bare-metal virtualization host and as a high-availability option for a Red Hat with High Availability guest VM. Xen server support has been discontinued as of Red Hat 6.0. In contrast, Steeleye supports the following virtualization environments within a VM: Citrix XenServer Oracle Virtual Machine (OVM) VMware vsphere 5.x KVM VMware ESX Server 3.x VMware Server 1.0 Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 VMware vsphere 4.2 Summary Steeleye Protection Suite for Linux is more mature and it shows. It is better integrated, provides better value, a more complete solution, and more choices for OS, storage, and virtualization. Application recovery is the core strength for Steeleye and appears to be an afterthought for Red Hat.
