This course focuses on the Symmetrix VMAX family of products, describing the various models and characteristics. 2

This module covers customers needs in a system storage and explains how the EMC Symmetrix product family address those needs. An overview of the Symmetrix VMAX product line, which includes a description of the VMAX 10K, 20K and 40K arrays, is also presented. 3

Symmetrix is the world s most trusted storage platform. It meets all the storage requirements for today s business needs. Key reasons why customers choose Symmetrix are listed on this slide, along with the business challenges they address. The Symmetrix VMAX product family is purpose-built for virtual environments. Integration with virtualized servers enable virtual environments. High-end capabilities are combined with unmatched levels of scale, ease of use, and automation. The Symmetrix VMAX family of products delivers higher service levels through scale-out and tiering at a low total cost of ownership. For space efficiency, Virtual Provisioning with new automation enables the customer to easily grow and reclaim storage. For data security, Symmetrix provides data encryption with PowerPath and Data-At-Rest-Encryption. 4

The VMAX family consists of three platforms optimized for specific market segments and competition: VMAX 10K, formerly the VMAXe; VMAX 20K, formerly the VMAX; and the VMAX 40K. This allows for a comprehensive and current VMAX portfolio. All three platforms are built on the industry-leading Virtual Matrix Architecture and run the same Enginuity code. The VMAX 40K boasts a redesigned architecture with unmatched levels of performance and scale, two times over the competition. It is bigger, better and faster, and there is no competitive offering. Note that throughout this training program, the reference VMAX Family refers to all three Symmetrix VMAX platforms. 5

Listed on this slide are some of the key reasons why customers choose Symmetrix VMAX, including its high-end capabilities that are combined with unmatched levels of scale, ease of use, and automation to enable virtual environments. Also, Symmetrix VMAX enables you to deliver higher service levels through scale-out and tiering at the lowest total cost of ownership. Symmetrix VMAX offers FAST, which automatically optimizes performance to meet service level requirements. Users can also start small and scale out resources to provide performance, on demand, with predictable service levels. Lastly, Symmetrix VMAX achieves always-on availability to eliminate outages and improve service delivery. 6

Symmetrix has a solid history of supporting mission-critical applications in Tier 1 environments across mainframes, open systems, and files, when deployed with NAS gateways. As companies now move to the cloud, Symmetrix VMAX with Enginuity 5876 is uniquely positioned to continue this support and help enable you to virtualize those Tier 1 applications with confidence. With Symmetrix VMAX, EMC is bringing these same capabilities to newer cloud-based environments with support for virtual machines, virtual desktops, and even object data with EMC Atmos. As customers look to virtualize Tier 1 applications, doing so with Symmetrix VMAX using EMC s proven legacy, simplifies the process. 7

This slide provides a quick comparison between VMAX family offerings. Please take a moment to review the table. 8

As with all Symmetrix VMAX family products, the Global Memory is truly global in nature. In the Virtual Matrix architecture, Global Memory is distributed across all Directors. The Virtual Matrix allows access to all Global Memory from all Directors. A distributed Global Memory means that from the viewpoint of a Director, some Global Memory is local and some resides with other Directors. The Virtual Matrix Architecture allows direct access to local parts of Global Memory. Access to Global Memory on other Directors is by way of highly available, low-latency, high-speed RapidIO Interconnect. This Interconnect enables a Director to communicate with every other Director. The Virtual Matrix Interconnect is a core logical construct of the architecture, requiring some form of fabric-based, redundant mesh design in contrast to copper etch on a single backplane. Additional VMAX engines are added non-disruptively to efficiently scale system resources. 9

The Symmetrix VMAX Engine supports up to 128 ports per system. The back-end ports provide connections to enterprise Flash drives, Fibre Channel drives, and SATA drives. The core processing consists of four Quad-core Intel processors. The Global Memory is shared across Symmetrix engines. The Virtual Matrix interface connects and shares resources across the entire system. The VMAX 10K Engine also provides a high-availability base configuration. The Engine is connected to the Virtual Matrix, except in one model, and allows all system resources, including CPU, memory, disks, and host channels, to be dynamically accessed and shared by any application. 10

The VMAX 10K system offers 144GB per engine, for a total of 576G. However, Enginuity allows addressing of 128GB per engine of that memory, so the maximum memory configurable is actually 512GB. There is overhead that is associated with each of the Directors that requires 6GB of memory to be used per Director, bringing that total down to 464GB. Because we mirror cache, 232GB is the true usable maximum amount. 11

In the VMAX 20K, each engine contains a portion of Global Memory and two Directors capable of managing hosts, disks, and remote connections simultaneously. As shown, the VMAX 20K has 16 Directors, each with eight slices. This architecture allows for scalability in all aspects; Front-end connectivity, Global Memory, Back-end connectivity, and disk capacity. In the VMAX 20K system, the largest installable cache configuration is 1024GB. This is eight engines with 128GB per engine, or 64GB per Director. With the 64GB Directors, 59GB is actually usable and 5GB is overhead. For other engine sizes, the overhead is 4GB of memory to be used per Director. The total maximum configurable cache is actually 944GB, and because we mirror cache, 472GB is the true usable maximum amount. 12

The VMAX 40K system offers 256GB per engine, so the maximum memory configurable is 2048GB. There is overhead that is associated with each of the Directors that require 4GB of memory to be used per Director, bringing that total down to 1984GB. Because we mirror cache, 992GB is the true usable maximum amount. 13

The VMAX 40K introduced the next generation engine. It utilizes the power of its dual, six core Westmere CPUs, helping to increase the back-end performance from previous generations. The 2.8 GHz XEON operates at GHz. There is one core per DA loop, and one core per FA, even with two FC ports. The DA cores are not pooled. The multi-lane PCIe Gen 2 drives the bandwidth for all Director slices so that FAs can push the front-end ports at 100% of bandwidth on all ports at once. The VMAX 40K s quad virtual matrix doubles the bandwidth, which equates to increased performance for cache miss IOPS. Redundant virtual matrix interconnect connections allow sharing of the Global Memory resources across the system. The Global Memory maximum is doubled, which improves cache and FAST VP efficiency. From an availability and serviceability perspective, the back-end and front-end ports come in groups of four to provide the highest levels of serviceability and availability. The 2x factor goes beyond performance, memory, fabric, and bandwidth by extending to architecture scalability. 14

The Symmetrix VMAX 20K uses Redundant Star Topology Fabric with two Matrix Interface Board Enclosure, or MIBEs, that connect the VMAX engines to the Virtual Matrix. Each VMAX 20K integrated Director board has two Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable, or QSFP, connections for a total of eight connections per Director to the Virtual Matrix. The Virtual Matrix is also referred to as MIBE, and has up to 128 connections. Each Director has up to eight front-end ports and two QSFP connections to disk. 15

With VMAX 40K the number of fabric resources is doubled from two MIBEs to four MIBEs, increasing performance and making the virtual fabric more fault tolerant. All engines have eight QSFP connections from the SIBs to the MIBEs. This is an increase from two QSFPs per Director to two MIBEs at VMAX 20K, to four QFSPs per Director to four MIBEs at VMAX 40K. This doubles the connectivity to 256 connections, as each Director has 16 connections to the fabric. 16

Cache configuration rules are listed on this slide. As always, be sure to check the Service Readiness Website for the latest rules and limitations. There are three important rules that must be observed in order to avoid wasting memory. Rule number 1 states that the Director boards within the same VMAX Engine must have the same amount of memory. Rule number 2 states that there are at least two Engines with the same amount of memory, and rule number 3 is no engine should have more than double the memory of the smallest engine. 17

VMAX Cloud Edition is the first self-service, enterprise-class cloud delivery platform that provides an easily consumable way to access enterprise storage for public, private, and hybrid clouds. It s designed for the cloud, and engineered for the enterprise. It provides self-service access to a pre-configured service level catalog to select from a wide range of service level targets that are automatically delivered. It s designed for multi-tenancy and provides tenant level metering and chargeback reporting, as well as customizable reports. It also has REST APIs to integrate into your existing orchestration. It s built with the Tier-1 enterprise class storage attributes of VMAX. The VMAX Cloud Edition can be the cornerstone of your future service offerings. 18

This module focuses on Symmetrix Enginuity operations and volume protection that are used within the Symmetrix VMAX family. 19

Enginuity is the software component that manages all Symmetrix operations and system resources. It ensures system availability by fault monitoring, error detection, and notification. It provides operation optimization through intelligent algorithms and ensures data integrity. The Enginuity operating environment delivers the following benefits; continuous availability, data integrity, built-in security features, and performance optimization and advanced management. 20

This illustration depicts the layered levels of Enginuity and their functionality for all Symmetrix VMAX family models. The top layer is the host communication point to the Symmetrix. At the bottom, are the actual Symmetrix hardware components, such as memory and Directors. EMC s solution enabler APIs are the storage management programming interfaces that provide an access mechanism for managing the Symmetrix, third-party storage, switches, and host storage resources. The APIs are sets of rules that software layers can use to communicate between each level without having full details of the supported hardware. 21

The Enginuity level is represented by a series of numbers, illustrated here. The numbers that define an Enginuity level have specific meaning. For example, if the Enginuity level is , the 58 represents the VMAX Family, 76 is the microcode family, 198 is the field release level to the microcode, and 148 is the field release to the service processor code. Non-disruptive microcode upgrade and load capabilities are currently available for the Symmetrix. 22

In a Read Hit operation, the requested data resides in Global Memory. The requested data is transferred through the Symmetrix front-end port to the host, and then the metadata is updated in the Global Memory. Since the data is in Global Memory, there are no delays due to disk seek time and latency. 23

In a Read Miss operation, the requested data is not in Global Memory and must be retrieved from a disk drive. While the space is created in the Global Memory, a Symmetrix back-end port reads the data from the drive. The back-end port stores the data in Global Memory. The frontend port then reconnects with the host and transfers the data to the host. The metadata is also updated in Global Memory. Because the data is not in Global Memory, the Symmetrix system must search for data on the disk and then transfer it to Global Memory. 24

A Fast Write occurs when there is sufficient Global Memory space available for the incoming write request. During a Fast Write, a host write command is sent from the host, the Symmetrix front-end port places the incoming data directly into Global Memory, updates the metadata, and then sends an acknowledgment to the host indicating that the data has been written. The Symmetrix back-end ports asynchronously de-stage the data from Global Memory to the disk. 25

A Delayed Fast Write occurs only when the Fast Write threshold has been exceeded. The write threshold, also called the Write Pending Limit, is the percentage of Global Memory that contains modified data. If this situation occurs, the Symmetrix system first de-stages some data to the disk drives to free up space in Global Memory. When sufficient Global Memory space is available, the Symmetrix front-end ports process the host write request as a Fast Write. 26

When configuring the Symmetrix, there are different types of Symmetrix volumes that can be configured. For example, Standard volumes, or STDs, are configured for normal production operations. Virtual Devices, or VDEVs, are configured for TimeFinder/SNAP local pointer-based replication. TDEV devices are configured for Virtual Provisioning. R1 and R2 volumes are configured for remote SRDF replication. Save Devices are configured for TimeFinder/Snap and SRDF/A DSE. Data Devices are configured for Virtual Provisioning. Dynamic Reallocation Volumes, or DRVs devices, are configured for Symmetrix Optimizer and FAST. 27

Data format with open systems use Fixed Block Architecture, or FBA. On a VMAX 10K array, each track has 128 blocks. Drives are formatted at 520 byte sectors, and each block is 512 bytes, thus the track has a size of 64 KB. Mainframe systems use Count Key, or CKD, format, which is a 57KB track size. The VMAX systems provide block Cycle Redundancy Check, or CDC, error checking based on the industry-standard T10 Data Integrity Field. Block CRC error checking provides a data protection word for every block written, and also includes additional checking information to ensure that the data read back is what was written. The system checks block CRC every time data is transferred within the Symmetrix system. 28

RAID protection options are configured at the volume level. The same Symmetrix can employ a variety of protection schemes. RAID1 withstands failure of one drive within one of the mirrored pairs. The number of required drives is twice the amount required to store data. RAID 5 protection is available with Enginuity 5771 and above. Data blocks are striped horizontally across the members of a RAID 5 group, and each member owns some data tracks and some parity tracks. RAID 1+0 is a combination of RAID 1 (mirrored) and RAID 0 (striping), and is used for mainframe environments. RAID 1+0 allows four Symmetrix system devices, each one-fourth the size of the original IBM device, to appear as one IBM device to the host, accessible by way of one host address. Raid 0 is a volume with no data protection. 29

EMC offers three Storage Sparing methods; Dynamic Sparing, Permanent Member Sparing and Direct Member Sparing. Dynamic Sparing is used within the DMX family of arrays, where Permanent Member and Direct Member Sparing are used within the VMAX family. Permanent sparing permanently replaces a failing drive with a spare drive through a configuration change. Permanent sparing is used in conjunction with RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6 and SRDF. During permanent sparing, the Symmetrix system looks for a spare drive of the same block size, capacity, and speed in a good location to permanently replace the failing drive. Once a spare is identified, the permanent sparing process loads a new configuration file. This reconfigures the logical volumes from the failing drive onto the selected spare. Once the data is rebuilt onto the new disk, the failed disk drive becomes a not ready spare in the spare pool. 30

When a drive fails, Direct Member Sparing (DMS) runs a script that adds a new drive, but keeps the failing drive, which becomes defective, but Ready. Keeping the new drive in a Ready state enables a copy process from the failing drive. DMS becomes beneficial with Parity RAID protection, such as RAID 5. Instead of rebuilding data from all the drives in the RAID Group, we can now copy directly from the failing drive, where possible. Any remaining tracks unable to copy are rebuilt from the remaining members. This cuts rebuilding time significantly. The failing drive is removed only at the end of the rebuild. 31

Enginuity 5876 introduced many new enhancements for dynamic back-end configuration changes. The dynamic back-end feature allows the modification of specific configuration items, rather than re-loading the entire configuration. Such interfaces are less error-prone, because they affect only those items specified by the caller, and nothing else. This eliminates response time spikes due to configuration change IML, which reloads the entire configuration file and greatly improves overall duration of back-end configuration change procedures. Dynamic backend enhancements also support multiple concurrent back-end configuration changes with Enginuity The table lists supported configuration changes for Enginuity 5875 versus changes for

This module focuses on the functions and features of Symmetrix VMAX. 33

Symmetrix systems preserve the integrity of data stored in cache by conducting ongoing data checks and corrections, and by proactively monitoring the hardware where data is cached. Most storage subsystems add Error Checking and Correction, or ECC bytes to each data record field. Symmetrix VMAX systems correct single bit errors and report an error code once the single bit errors reach a predefined threshold. When a multi-bit error occurs, the Symmetrix system fences the physical memory segment and retrieves the data from mirrored memory. In the event that physical memory replacement is required, the Symmetrix system notifies EMC support and a non-disruptive replacement is performed. 34

Symmetrix systems proactively scan data to protect against drive read and write errors. Symmetrix VMAX systems validate data at transfer, and also use idle time to read data and to monitor drives. During data and drive monitoring, the Director checks the data correction bits for validity. If a drive read error occurs, the Director reads all data on that track to Symmetrix system physical memory and tests the drive track for errors. The Director rewrites the data from physical memory back to the drive. The system maps around any bad block(s) detected during the test, thereby avoiding defects in the media. A vault operation is triggered when the Symmetrix system is powered down, transitioned offline, or when environmental conditions initiate a vault situation. The vault capacity on each of these also differs. The VMAX 10K is 9 GB per vault drive on 20 drives per engine. The VMAX 20K is 5 GB per vault drive on 40 drives per engine. The VMAX 40K needs double the vault space of a VMAX 20K. 35

The TimeFinder family has several different solutions to help you meet your service-level requirements, while providing very powerful local replication capabilities. TimeFinder easily integrates into industry-leading applications, such as Oracle, Microsoft, VMware, SAP, and IBM. This is a result of the integration efforts, as well as EMC partnerships with these major application vendors. TimeFinder is highly recommended with remote replication solutions, such as SRDF, to increase application availability and improve test/development capabilities and disaster restart requirements. TimeFinder is the solution Symmetrix customers rely on for business continuity locally, in the array, and in the data center. 36

Enginuity 5876 introduced TimeFinder VP Snap, which provides the ability to create spaceefficient snaps for Virtual Pool devices. This functionality is available for Symmetrix VMAX 10K, 20K, and 40K. Up to 32 snaps per VP source can be created. TimeFinder VP Snap leverages TimeFinder/Clone technology to create space-efficient snaps for thin devices by allowing multiple sessions to share allocations within a thin pool. Additionally, less cache is utilized because track groups are saved instead of individual tracks. 37

The field-proven SRDF family is the industry s most powerful suite of remote storage replication software available for disaster recovery and business continuity. The SRDF family offers unmatched deployment flexibility and massive scalability. It delivers a wide range of distancereplication capabilities, thus helping you to meet mixed service level requirements with minimal effect on operations. The Symmetrix SRDF replication features offer performance, flexibility, consistency, integration, management and results. SRDF for VMAX 10K is sized just right, and brings trusted replication capabilities for missioncritical Symmetrix VMAX 10K environments. With Enginuity 5876, SRDF has several enhancements. 38

With Enginuity 5876, Symmetrix VMAX 40K, 20K and 10K now have the RecoverPoint Splitter directly integrated into the arrays. This RecoverPoint Splitter integration is much simpler and more efficient than deploying host- or fabric-based splitters. With the RecoverPoint integration, the VMAX 40K and 20K arrays can replicate to heterogeneous arrays as EMC VNX, and even VPLEX. Additionally, all the RecoverPoint functionalities, continuous data protection, continuous remote replication, and concurrent local and remote, are available for the entire VMAX family. 39

The type of local replication technology that is best suited for your data center is dependent on your business requirements. TimeFinder has the ability to replicate multiple copies for test and development, integrates with SRDF to enhance availability for disaster recovery, and has full copy, snap, and spaceefficient snap capabilities. It complements RecoverPoint because you can create multiple pointin-time copies for test and development. RecoverPoint, on the other hand, provides granular continuous data protection and the ability to operationally recover from any point-in-time. 40

The type of remote replication technology that is best suited for your data center is dependent on your business requirements. SRDF is considered the gold standard for mission-critical environments, with its ability to provide application consistency across arrays and to be deployed in multi-site and Star configurations. RecoverPoint, on the other hand, has the ability to replicate to any heterogeneous storage array, and provides granular data protection. 41

Virtual Provisioning was first implemented in Enginuity 5773 and is available on all VMAX family systems. Virtual Provisioning presents an application with more capacity than is physically allocated, and in some situations, may provide a more efficient way of allocating capacity for applications that are somewhat predictable in capacity growth patterns. These TDEVs can improve capacity utilization because the actual data is stored in a Thin pool; only the portion of what is used is allocated in the shared common pool, and the pool is shared by many TDEVs. In the example on this slide, the host has a 100 GB TDEV. The TDEV uses no disk space. The Thin pool is the shared common storage pool, and contains the actual data. Only 20 GB is allocated until more space is required. 42

Virtual Provisioning for the Symmetrix VMAX family now has a number of capabilities that customers have been asking for. Migration between standard thick and virtually provisioned thin volumes, and vice versa, are now supported with TimeFinder/Clone, along with PowerPath Migration Enabler. Additionally, Virtual Provisioning now automatically redistributes data across data devices in a pool to maintain performance when adding or removing capacity from a pool. All of these capabilities increase efficiency and reduce cost. 43

Auto-provisioning Groups is a capability that simplifies and automates storage provisioning within the VMAX family arrays. On the left illustration, we have a traditional storage system, where storage mapping and masking is a manual process. When provisioning storage in a virtual environment, all VMware ESX services in the cluster must be mapped to the storage. This is required to leverage mobility features, such as, VMware VMotion, where a virtual server is dynamically moved between physical servers. The server that the virtual image is being moved to must be mapped to the storage, otherwise the VM cannot access the data. With five ESX servers, with two HBAs on each being mapped to four storage ports, the result is 40 individual masking operations to complete the process. If four clicks are required to complete each operation, the result is 160 operations. If the example was for twice as many ESX servers, the number of operations would doubled to 320. Auto-provisioning Groups, shown in the right illustration, significantly simplifies the process by allowing the Storage Administrator to create host groups, port groups, and device groups, automating the process down to about 15 operations. 44

By simply pooling storage resources, defining a policy, and applying it to an application, FAST automatically and dynamically moves data across storage types, so that it is in the right place at the right time. The system automatically and dynamically monitors I/O activity associated with a FAST Storage Group, and can relocate data based on its performance needs. The migration of hot data to a higher Storage Tier and cold data to a lower Storage Tier occurs during a window of time that is defined by the end user. The result is that the process to align data with the right Storage Tier for optimal performance and lower cost is automated. 45

It s important to understand the key elements of Symmetrix FAST: A Storage Tier is a shared storage resource that is defined by a combination of storage media and RAID protection. For example, Flash storage with RAID 5 protection. FAST Policies manage data placement and movement across storage tiers. For example, a Platinum policy could consist of 25% Flash, 50% Fibre Channel, and 25% SATA, and a Silver policy could be defined by a mix of only Fibre Channel and SATA. A Storage Group contains a set of storage devices that are associated with an application. A FAST Policy is associated with each Storage Group, so FAST can monitor and optimize the performance of the Storage Group to make the best use of Flash and SATA drives, and therefore, reducing cost per IOPS and cost per gigabyte, while meeting the performance requirements of the application. FAST will manage the percentage of storage tiers of Flash, Fibre Channel, and SATA allocated to each Storage Group. These concepts allow you to create storage tiers, define specific FAST Policies, and then apply them to Storage Groups, as appropriate. This allows FAST to deliver the right level of service to each application or line of business. 46

Virtual LUN VP Mobility allows organizations to respond to changing business requirements when using tiered storage within a single array. Virtually provisioned thin device data can be migrated between high-performance drives and high-capacity drives. Data can be moved between storage pools configured on different drive technologies, and with different RAID protection types. Symmetrix Virtual LUN VP Mobility can perform manual transparent, non-disruptive data movement between storage tiers across virtual pools. This feature adds support for moving thin LUNs between pools. This includes the ability to re-gather a thin volume s many chunks from multiple virtual pools and move them all to a single virtual pool. It is also important to note that with Virtual LUN VP Mobility, a VP LUN from a single pool, or a VP LUN that had been spread across pools with FAST VP can be moved to a single thin pool type. 47

Federated Tiered Storage simplifies management and operations and consolidates heterogeneous storage under Symmetrix VMAX control. It provides the ability to use trusted Symmetrix features such as FAST VP, SRDF, TimeFinder, VLUN, and VAAI. Federated Tiered Storage extends the life and value of older storage assets. It can also be used to move all the data from the external storage assets to VMAX. With FAST VP, the external capacity can be declared as a tier within FAST, and FAST will automatically move data between the external array and VMAX to optimize performance. Symmetrix VMAX assures data integrity for external arrays with validation checksums. While other vendors claim virtualization, they do not have external array data integrity checking. 48

XtremSW Cache puts PCIe Flash in the servers, as cache, and can dramatically improve customers application response times, and deliver more IOPS. It is a combination of hardware and software that integrates with the VMAX to increase performance and protection. Most frequently referenced data will be placed on the flash cache so that it will be readily accessible at the host, thereby reducing response times considerably. It will adapt to changing workloads and always place the hottest data in the cache. 49

XtremSW Cache also uses a write-thru algorithm, which guarantees that newly written data will go to the storage array for high availability and disaster recovery. Selection of volumes to be placed in cache is automatic, and is based on analysis between the VMAX and XtremSW Cache. Read-centric data will have dramatic reductions in I/O response times and reduce the workload on the VMAX. 50

Federated Live Migration is an innovative breakthrough that solves one of the biggest problems faced by organizations with large storage environments, the necessity of host and application downtime to enable a migration to a new storage array. Federated Live Migration eliminates the complexities of host-based or SAN-based migration strategies by leveraging the intelligence of the arrays themselves, affording the first and only truly non-disruptive migration solution, one that does not require insertion or addition of new hardware or software to the organization s SAN or hosts. 51

For secure audit, EMC has tamper-proof logs and RSA envision integration. For secure access, EMC has two-factor authentication and access controls. For secure data, EMC has data and flight protection for replicated links with IPSec, as well as encryption and key management integration for Data-at-Rest Encryption. Symmetrix Service Credential secured by RSA is an example of EMC delivering integrated technology with its RSA Security portfolio. RSA features prevent unauthorized service actions on Symmetrix systems through integrated RSA technology. It provides authentication of user identities and authorizes the actions of EMC and partner service personnel as they log into the service processor. 52

Anyone with access to Symmetrix host-based management software could execute any function on any Symmetrix device. Applications can issue management commands through any device in a Symmetrix and invoke configuration or control commands. Open Systems hosts could manipulate mainframe devices; Windows hosts can manipulate UNIX volumes and vice versa. Shared storage systems are vulnerable to accidental or intentional tampering. To prevent this, Symmetrix Access Control can be implemented by a Symmetrix administrator to restrict host access to defined sets of devices and specific operations. When configured, and an unauthorized host attempts to run a control operation, the command returns a message similar to the following: Symmetrix Access Control denied the request to the console. 53

An alternative to host-based access control provided by Symmetrix Access Control is userbased authorization. With user-based authorization, a role is associated with a user name. Based on the role, the user has the specified access level for all devices in the Symmetrix. Hostbased and user-based access control, while completely separate and independent, can be used together to create the highest level of security. 54

Data-at-Rest-Encryption is an array encryption and a set-it-and-forget-it feature for the entire array that is enabled at installation of a new array. It has an automatic internal encryption key management system and does not need any external key server. It requires 4 Gb/s encryptionenabled Symmetrix VMAX Engines. This encryption solution leverages industry-leading encryption capabilities from RSA, minimizing security risks when drives are removed from the array and when arrays are repurposed. It also complies with several regulation and auditor requirements. Data-at-Rest-Encryption minimizes risks to sensitive data on removed physical drives. Data-at-Rest-Encryption also helps to manage a secure technology refresh, and retire or repurpose old arrays without introducing security risks. 55

EMC s elicensing facility provides a process for accessing and tracking array-based software functionality. The process is designed to provide an end-to-end solution to help customers manage, track, and comply with software license entitlement. It supports Enginuity, SRDF, TimeFinder, FAST, Symmetrix Optimizer, Dynamic Cache Partitioning and Symmetrix Priority Controls. elicensing impacts the entire Symmetrix VMAX family product line. It allows users to activate software features by retrieving license files from support.emc.com after placing an order. It is important to note that the implementation of elicensing is designed with a do no harm policy in mind, meaning software will continue to run, even if entitlements are exceeded. When licenses or entitlements are exceeded, users and field teams are notified to implement and develop the next steps. 56

The License Authorization Code is a 20-character alphanumeric string used to activate license files. During the Order Entry process, the customer receives a LAC Notification containing this 20-character alphanumeric string. Once the sales order is approved, the entitlements are created within the licensing management system. The second step is to log into support.emc.com and select the products you wish to activate. To get a license file for a Symmetrix VMAX Series array, the user selects Symmetrix VMAX Series from the Licensing R - Z section. Step three is the activation step. At this point, the user is presented with three options; Register my product, Register my Upgrade, or Manage my Licenses. To activate a License File for a new VMAX, click Register My Product and follow the instructions. The instructions eventually lead to the Activation Confirmation page. This process generates an Activation Certificate that contains the license files and a list of the static keys, if required. The last step is installing the license files for your products. To install the license files for your new VMAX array, launch the Unisphere for VMAX product and follow the steps for registering the array that is currently not licensed. Reference the License Activation Guide for EMC Symmetrix VMAX Family for more details. 57

Symmetrix VMAX 10K includes the core software package, which includes the Enginuity Operating Environment, Virtual Provisioning software, TimeFinder for VMAX 10K clone and snapshots, an integrated RecoverPoint splitter functionality for VMAX 10K and the Symmetrix Management suite. Optional software is available if additional functionality is required, including: Replication with RecoverPoint, Continuous Remote Replication, Concurrent Local and Remote, or SRDF synchronous, asynchronous, or data mobility. Optional software also includes storage resource management with the EMC ProSphere Package, or simplification of replication operations with EMC Replication Manager, which provides a single wizard-driven GUI to automate the creation of application-consistent replicas. Replication Manager supports TimeFinder and RecoverPoint in both local and remote applications, and operates in both physical and virtual environments. SRDF for VMAX 10K allows SRDF support between existing Symmetrix arrays, based on configuration and Enginuity models. 58

For Symmetrix VMAX 40K, EMC has simplified the software ordering process by creating software suites. These collections of several individual VMAX 40K software are summarized on this slide. 59

This module focuses on Symmetrix management software and explains how these products are used in the Symmetrix VMAX family. 60

The Symmetrix is configured using a static configuration file called the IMPL.bin. The file is created, initially, using the SymmWin software from the Service Processor and loaded into each Director in the Symmetrix. When modifying a configuration, the current IMPL.bin file is pulled from the Symmetrix and edited using SymmWin. SymmWin is an EMC-written graphical-based application for managing a Symmetrix. SymmWin runs locally on a Symmetrix Service Processor or on a standalone PC. Running on the service processor allows communication with an operational Symmetrix. Running it on a standalone system allows you to build a new configuration, or view and modify an archived IMPL configuration file. 61

Unisphere for VMAX is EMC's new management console for the Symmetrix VMAX Family. Unisphere for VMAX offers navigation and streamlined operations to simplify and reduce the time required to manage your data center. Unisphere for VMAX establishes EMC's direction to simplify management under a common framework. The Symmetrix Management Suite enables customers to use Unisphere for VMAX using a single elicensing entitlement. With Unisphere, VMAX customers can provision, manage, monitor, and analyze VMAX arrays from one console, significantly reducing storage administration time. Navigation through the product is easier, faster, and more intuitive, and the learning curve is greatly reduced for those users who also work with other Unisphere management consoles. This is especially useful for customers that have VNX/VNXe and CLARiiON arrays in their environments. Unisphere for VMAX 1.6 supports the new functionality provided by 5876 for the VMAX 20K and VMAX 40K. It supports base array management functionality, such as auto-provisioning, virtual provisioning, FAST VP controls and performance monitoring. Analysis capabilities are also included. 62

The EMC VSI for VMware vsphere is a Unified Storage Management plug-in feature that provides a single management interface to manage storage. For example, it can provision datastores for Raw Device Mapping volumes on block storage. Virtual Storage Integrator is a product that addresses the management control concerns of storage administrators who want to provision virtual server storage resources. It includes support for VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V, and allows storage administrators to easily leverage the advanced efficiency, scalability, and security capabilities of Symmetrix VMAX for virtual servers. 63

EMC ProSphere provides end-to-end views across your virtual and physical environments. From virtual guests down through storage, with just two clicks of the mouse, we can search on a host and display end-to-end topology and SRDF relationship views. EMC ProSphere provides views to understand SRDF feature usage and trends. EMC ProSphere can monitor alerts across the total Symmetrix local and remote environments, and drill down to quickly understand their impact. 64

EMC s Watch4net software suite is a carrier-class performance reporting application that provides real-time, historical, and projected visibility into the performance of the Symmetrix local and remote topologies. The software allows collecting and aggregating performance data from various sources, including SRDF networks, into a single repository, as illustrated here. With proactive Performance Management, Watch4net provides proactive alerting, including Situations to watch SRDF application network traffic, to troubleshoot Symmetrix SRDF performance problems. 65

This course introduced the Symmetrix VMAX family line of products and their characteristics. The volume and protection types, and well as I/O operations were described. The management features and business advantages were also covered. This concludes the training. Proceed to the course assessment on the next slide. 66
