DataStream For DataStream OS 2.6 or later Document # NA Version 1.08 April
Abstract This reference architecture describes how to connect DataStream switches to Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) fabric interconnects. Audience Intended for individuals responsible for the installation and configuration of the Coho DataStream with Cisco hardware. Prerequisite Knowledge Experience with the following concepts is recommended: Enterprise Networking Coho DataStream Management UI Cisco UCS Manager Scope This reference architecture addresses the following topics: Link aggregation Creating port-channels Configuring fabric interconnects Working with the Cisco UCS Manager Creating VLANs Additional Help For additional information we recommend that you first consult the Cisco hardware documentation and the UCS Manager guide; see the Resources page. You may also contact Coho Data technical support found on the Coho Data support services page NA Reference Architecture
UCS with vpc UCS deployments are also supported with an intermediary nexus switch; however, this configuration is out of scope for this document. For more information vpc integration, see Cisco Nexus vpc Reference Architecture. Ensure that you pay close attention to the IP-Hash Load Balancing - Additional Requirements section, in the event the intermediary nexus switches are configured to use IP-Hash load balancing, rather than Mac-Hash load balancing. DataStream Reference Topology for UCS with intermediary switch and vpc. UCS DIRECT CONNECT NA Reference Architecture
DataStream Reference Topology for NA Reference Architecture
Reference NFS Network Configuration This section outlines a DataStream NFS network configuration. Additional instructions are available in the DataStream Install Guide. DataStream Storage Network Settings From the DataStream UI, under Settings > Networking, the DataStream NFS network must be configured in the following manner: MTU: 9000 VLAN ID: 200 DataStream UI v2.6 - Network Configuration in Management UI (Settings > Networking) NA Reference Architecture
DataStream Switch Configuration Each fabric interconnect (FI) has at least one cable to each DataStream switch. The ports on each fabric interconnect are merged into port-channels; one port-channel per fabric interconnect. When connecting to a fabric interconnect, the DataStream ports must be merged into active LAGs using active or passive LACP. In this example, port 1 on each DataStream switch is connected to fabric interconnect A. Active LAG Configuration Example DataStream UI v2.6 - Hardware > Switches View NA Reference Architecture
vsphere Configuration In the reference architecture, we are using virtual switch tagging (VST). VST means that when a frame arrives at the vswitch, the switch will inspect the frame, remove the tag, and then forward it to the VMkernel port with the matching VLAN ID. For outgoing packets, the virtual switch will add the VMkernel associated VLAN ID to the frame before forwarding the frame to the attached switch. Because the virtual switch is forwarding a tagged frame, the upstream switch port must be configured as a Trunk. NFS VMkernel Config NFS VMkernel Port. In this example, we use static port-channels. You can also use dynamic (LACP) port-channels in conjunction with vsphere distributed switches. The NFS VMkernel port is configured in the following manner: NFS VMkernel portgroup Network Label: COHO NFS VLAN ID: 200 MTU: 9000 NIC Teaming Policy Route based on SRC-Mac Hash NA Reference Architecture
Configuring Fabric Interconnects of DataStream Connection Fabric Interconnects Modes Ethernet Switching Mode In this mode the UCS F/I acts as a switch. STP is used for loop avoidance. End Host Mode (EHM) The default mode of operation for cisco fabric interconnects. In this mode F/I interfaces do not participate in spanning tree. All ports are 802.1q trunks. End host mode is used in this reference topology. Changing the operational mode of a fabric interconnect will cause the device to reboot. Changes to operational mode should be scheduled during a maintenance window. To verify the operational mode of a F/I: 1. Log into UCS manager. 2. Expand Equipment Tab. 3. Expand Fabric Interconnects. 4. On the left, select the General tab. Cisco UCS Manager - Fabric Interconnect A (primary) After the operational mode of the fabric interconnect has been configured. The next step is configure the Arista connected fabric interconnect port type. This is done via the LAN Uplinks Manager. In this deployment we are using Uplink Ports. Uplink ports are always configured as trunks NA Reference Architecture
Fabric Interconnect Ports Configure the fabric interconnect DataStream Switch connected ports as Uplink Ports. Do the following on both fabric interconnects (continuing from above instructions): 1. Under the General tab, in the Actions box, select LAN Uplinks Manager. 2. From the LAN Uplinks Manager window, expand Unconfigured Ethernet Ports. 3. Expand Fabric Interconnect A (primary). 4. Expand Fixed Module. 5. Click on a single port and then use the CTRL key to select additional ports. 6. Right-click the options menu and select Configure as Uplink Port. Cisco UCS Manager - Configure Selected Fabric Interconnect Ports as Uplink Port. Create port-channels using the newly create Uplink Ports The newly created Uplink Ports will be connected to the DataStream switches in the following manner (see diagram ). The fabric interconnect uplinks ports should be merged into port-channels NA Reference Architecture
Port-Channels On Fabric Interconnect Uplinks Ports Diagram showing Port-Channels 10 and 20 (LACP) The port-channel name and ID configured on the DataStream switches. See DataStream Switch configuration section of this guide. UCS supports LACP, PAgP is not supported, FIs don t support static port-channels (mode on). If the port-channel on the upstream switch is not configured for LACP, ports will be treated as individual ports. From the Lan Uplinks Manager : 1. On the left hand side, right-click on the Fabric Interconnect and select Create Port Channel. 2. In the new window, assign an ID: and Name:. 3. Click Next >. 4. Use the << and >> buttons to select the ports you wish to add to the port-channel. 5. Click Finish. Cisco UCS Manager - Setting Port-Channels on Fabric Interconnect Uplink Ports NA Reference Architecture
VLAN In the UCS Manager: 1. Expand the LAN tab. 2. Expand the LAN Cloud. Cisco UCS Manager - Creating VLANs. 3. Right click VLANs and select Create VLANs. 4. Enter the VLAN ID. 5. Select Common/Global for this new VLAN ID to both fabric interconnects. 6. Click Ok to complete. Once VLAN is created, we need to add port-channel to the NFS VLAN NA Reference Architecture
Adding Port-Channel to NFS VLAN 1. In LAN Uplinks Manager, click VLANs > VLAN Manager > Fabric A. 2. Refer to instructions at the bottom of the window, then click Port-Channel and VLAN. 3. Next, click Add to VLAN/VLAN Group. 4. Click Ok when prompted to continue. Cisco UCS Manager - After Adding Port-Channel to NFS VLAN. 5. Repeat these steps for Fabric B NA Reference Architecture
Other Design Considerations MTU Some deployment require jumbo frames, please see UCS implementation guide for instructions on how to configure MTU on your specific version of UCS. FAILOVER As a design decision, you can choose to let VMware do the failover (as you would traditionally with a rack server) or you can configure the UCS fabric interconnect failover. Cisco UCS Manager - Enabling Failover NA Reference Architecture
