11 Performance Monitoring Collaboration - Translate to unite Tool to monitor network performance: Bandwidth / Latency / Jitter / Trace route Two versions exist: perfsonar MDM and perfsonar PS Original approach (within DICE US-Europe Technical Collaboration Forum): Interoperability Developing compatibility modules Duplicating components (HADES/OWAMP) New approach (being discussed with I2, ESnet, Indiana University): Convergence Creating a new tool From the best of PS and MDM Using the same tool Same documentation, same training, same interface 11

12 perfsonar - The convergence process Two phases in convergence process: Phase 1 of new perfsonar: To include ps base install, plus bwctl and owamp on-demand wrap from MDM MDM user interface to be adopted Four test nodes (two in US, two in Europe) to be implemented by late May 2014 Phase 2: Convergence of , support and website Integration of remaining tools not included in phase 1 New perfsonar will enable networks to focus on performance monitoring and further development, and remove the need to spend resources on interoperability! 12

13 edurt - In a nutshell edurt is a world-wide Open Community, a virtual organisation covering performance issues for R&E networks. edurt is moving an extended field of action towards the end-users, researchers and academic ICTs an umbrella for all NREN RT teams. edurt supports and is linking new technologies as clouds and network research 13 13

21 EUMETSAT Multicast of Environmental Data Meteorological data from EUMETSAT satellites need to be distributed to sites in Europe, Asia and USA. EUMETSAT requires network infrastructure that enables terrestrial multicast dissemination to end sites. EUMETSAT and GÉANT are starting a two-year multicast prototype emulating operational scenarios from the EUMETSAT HQ in Darmstadt, using GÉANT infrastructure in Europe and global connectivity Agreement provides a Single Point of Contact to EUMETSAT for the related network services across GÉANT and the corresponding National Networks. 21

25 Supporting users: Òpera Oberta - Global access to operatic performances Access to cultural performances for students with an interest in the arts can be limited for cost reasons and if not staged locally. Òpera Oberta (Open Opera) provides a solution with performances made accessible exclusively to universities registered with the Liceu Theatre in Barcelona, Spain. La Fille du Regiment by G. Donizetti, David Cabrera Operatic performances are broadcast using multicast technology to participating universities. Each performance is supported with learning materials, including a lecture before each opera, images and archived documentation. Students can receive course credits for their virtual attendance. Average of 1300 students per performance at over 40 universities in Spain, Greece, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico. 25
