Tryfon Chiotis, GRNET
GRNET is a state-owned company operating under the supervision of the General Secretariat of Research & Technology Its main mission is to provide high-quality electronic infrastructure services to the Greek academic and research institutions: National and international connectivity services Grid infrastructure services (computing, storage, visualisation) A secondary mission is the promotion and dissemination of the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the public and private sector towards an e-government, e- Learning and e-business environment
Interconnects academic and research institutions (> 100 today), primary and secondary schools as a backbone (around ) strengthening communication and cooperation. Reaching up to end-users Continuously upgrades the national backbone (currently at Nx10 Gbps), institutions access (currently at 1/10 Gbps) and international connectivity (currently at 3*10 Gbps) Operates the Greek Internet Exchange (GRIX), peering of major Greek commercial Internet Service Providers Cooperates with Greek and international research and academic institutions for the development of innovative networking services Disseminate the Information Society and influence the European Research Area via Applied Research, Technology Integration, Solution Demonstration and Consultancy
35 PoPs Includes: 8410km MANs Attica & Thessaloniki DF local loops at 33 cities Single-mode fiber pair 15-year IRUs Availability 99% Monitoring and failure reporting Failure recovery
International Connectivity: GEANT
Develop a "dynamic" infrastructure controlled ondemand by users Introduction of advanced technologies of transmitting and switching Developing of infrastructure virtualization services Security mechanisms, identity management Monitoring and recording mechanisms of the networkenabled visual representation of the results to the wider community Support advanced services in connected institutions (onsite) Interface and provision of advanced network services to major research infrastructures Peering services for providers of non-commercial content
A data center with infrastructure capable to support 30 racks is in place cabling, power, A/C 2x10 Gbps uplinks to the user community 24/7 monitoring (environment and video streaming) An initial deployment of 6 racks Testing, pre-production and production virtualization services

Total length of trench ~ 31Km Length of lighted fiber ~ 20 Km Number of institutions covered ~75 It covers: 46% of elementary schools 78% of secondary schools 100% of universities
1 main node 6 distribution nodes 11 Gigabit Ethernet Switches (Cisco 3750G-12S) 130 Οptical Gigabit Ports

GRNET is providing to the School Network as a service: A. The optical fiber connecting the MAN Schools with the rest of the network B. The core circuit connecting the Kalamata node to Patra C. The same is true with all other nodes of School Network in Peloponissos

Connection of MAN to GRNET was done in November Traffic of the MAN schools for a period of six weeks

In the OPIS 68 optical fiber MANs were implemented in a equal number of municipalities (excluding Attika & Thessalonika) 1380 elementary & secondary schools connected with DF GRNET proposed to provide gigabit Internet over these links A special project with a budget of 5,6 mil. is estimated to connect 1272 schools in 55 cities. In first phase 920 schools in 30 MANs will be connected immediately to GRNET with no extra intercity optical links. The rest 25 cities will be connected to the nearest city with a GRNET PoP. The connection of the 108 schools in the remaining 13 cities with MANs would demand an extra funding of 10M, thus it is left for the future.
We consider that optical fiber is in an excellent state in order to succeed It is absolutely necessary to find an operator of the MANs ASAP (after 1/1/2011 we would not be able to provide an uninterrupted service and schools would need to keep the DSL connections for backup purposes) GRNET will cover the network connections with 15 year IRU contracts helping in a viable long term solution for almost 1300 school connections

Mission Development of a next generation open Public Sector Network Based on advanced network technologies, Providing high-level services to public Institutions Encouraging open competition of service providers Maximizing profits of economy of scale Aggregation of demand in the entire Public Sector
Three teams Team 1 study of an optical network Team 2 procurement of connectivity for more than public institutions Team 3 procurement of central services

Study showed that a new network creation for PSN through long term lease of fiber does not result in the lower cost, while it demands a significant amount of money in advance Increases the involvement of government to manage the physical infrastructure (even through a contractor) Use of existing MANs will provide enormous economic and social benefits. Another reason to find an MANs operator ASAP
