OptiDriver Application Suite INTRODUCTION MRV s OptiDriver is designed to optimize both 10 Gbps and applications with the industry s most compact, low power, and flexible product line. Offering a variety of solutions from flexible 10 Gbps/40 Gbps/ muxponders to low cost media converters to traditional transponders, OptiDriver has the solution to meet any customer need. OptiDriver s solutions are based on pluggable optics and offer the same multi-function flexibility that is standard in other OptiDriver modules. The exclusive use of pluggable optics (SFP+, QSFP+, and CFP) ensures that OptiDriver s solutions are optimized for current and future technologies and can immediately take advantage of advances in applications, span budget, and fiber capacity. By focusing on standard interfaces, OptiDriver can interface seamlessly with other standards-based solutions today and as standards progress. Flexible, Multi-Purpose Pluggable Optics The traditional flexibility of MRV s optical solutions is continued with the OptiDriver solutions, where customers can choose a single set of hardware for use in multiple applications. For example, by choosing the correct line pluggable optics (CFP module) a single card type can be deployed in converter, transponder, and repeater applications. This capability reduces ordering complexity and spares cost and results in an overall reduction in both capital and operational expenses. Flexible, Multi-Purpose Line Cards For 10G / 40G / 100G Applications 1

OptiDriver s muxponder card cost-effectively supports an arbitrary mix of 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps client interfaces, up to a total of. For customers with a large number of 10 Gbps services in their network, the 100 Gbps muxponder is an efficient way to combine ten 10Gbps services into a single 100Gbps service on the line side. For customers with a mix of 40Gbps and 10 Gbps services, the muxponder can flexibly carry any mix of services without the need to pre-plan the network or replace hardware for different mixes. OptiDriver s Transparent Transponder is a 3R regenerator that adds no additional overhead to the signals on the client or line side. This unique card offers the ability to transparently convert from one 100Gbps interface type to another interface type by choosing appropriate pluggable optics (CFPs). Through the use of line side CFPs with integrated OTN and FEC capability, the Transparent Transponder can also be used for longer distance applications. A single-slot wide card, the Transparent Transponder offers unprecedented density, with up to sixteen 100 Gbps transponders and supporting optical hardware (OADM, EDFA, Raman, DCM, etc.) supported in a single 10RU OptiDriver OD-48 chassis. OptiDriver s OTN Transponder includes integrated OTN FEC capability on the transponder, allowing operation over longer distances or in applications requiring ultra-low bit error rates. By integrating FEC onto the card, the OTN transponder allows customers to choose lower cost line optics and still achieve the performance of long-distance components. OptiDriver Card Client Side Integrated FEC Applications Muxponder 10 Gbps (up to 10) 40 Gbps (up to 2) Mix of 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps (up to ) Transparent Transponder No All three solutions from MRV offer a choice of pluggable CFP line side optics based on distance and capacity requirements. Gray (non-dwdm) optics are typically used in shorter reach applications. Gray optics operate over a single fiber pair, cannot be combined with other services on the same fiber, and are most appropriate for short distance, dedicated fiber interconnects. Metro DWDM optics operate over four DWDM wavelengths (4 x 25 Gbps) that can be either fixed or tunable and are a potential solution for operation on a fiber with a mix of other services. Coherent DWDM optics are the most technologically advanced and offer benefits on dispersion management, signal reach, and other optical properties. Coherent DWDM optics can greatly increase the capacity and reach of an optical network. The DWDM line optics solutions are also appropriate when the traffic needs to be transported along with other services over the same infrastructure. The flexibility of tunable line optics means that the service can be easily combined with other signals on the same fiber without restriction. Fiber Relief Service Consolidation Wavelength Optimization Media Conversion Distance Extension OTN Transponder Enhanced Distance Extension OptiDriver Line Optics Wavelengths DWDM Capable Maximum Span Reach Total Fiber Capacity Gray Optics Multiple, not tunable No ~ km Four, 50 GHz spacing, fixed ~ 40 km ~ 2 Tbps Metro DWDM Optics Four, 100 GHz spacing, fixed ~ 400 km ~1 Tbps Four 50 GHz, tunable ~ 400 km ~ 2 Tbps Coherent Optics One, tunable 400 km or more ~ 8 Tbps 2

FIBER RELIEF: 10GE MULTIPLEXING OVER 100G The service provider has an optical link between locations or inside of a single large site that consists of ten to eighty or more 10 Gigabit Ethernet services, and the optical link between locations has run out of capacity (10Gbps on a single fiber, 400Gbps on a 40 channel DWDM system, or 800Gbps on an 80 DWDM channel system). The customer needs more bandwidth between the sites, but is not able to lease or purchase additional fiber pairs or finds that wavelength optimization using 100Gbps aggregation is a more economical solution. To connect the two locations, MRV would propose using the OptiDriver optical network element equipped with Muxponder interfaces. The OptiDriver Muxponder efficiently and cost-effectively multiplexes up to ten 10 Gbps signals onto a single signal that can be either gray (single service per fiber) or DWDM (multiple services per fiber). If the requirement is to upgrade a single 10 Gbps per fiber infrastructure to a (10 x 10 Gbps) per fiber infrastructure without DWDM, MRV would propose using gray line optics on the Muxponder. Gray CFP optics are a lower-cost, limited reach solution that can be used to interconnect locations with a dedicated fiber. For a customer who needs to transport the services over a longer distance or more capacity per fiber, MRV would propose using DWDM line optics (Metro or Coherent) on the Muxponder. Coupled with the DWDM capabilities of the OptiDriver platform (passive multiplexing, amplification, dispersion management, etc.), Metro DWDM optics can provide 2 Tbps of ultimate capacity or more on a single fiber by multiplexing twenty services (4 x 25 Gbps) via DWDM. For higher capacity requirements, Coherent line optics can be employed to expand the capacity of a single fiber pair beyond 8 Tbps with eighty or more services running on separate wavelengths. Pluggable interfaces connecting to the site hardware (switch or router, for example) would be chosen based on the existing equipment interfaces. All standard SFP+ and QSFP+ (SR4, LR4 or ER4) types are natively supported. Data Center #1 Data Center #2 8 Tbps 80 Wavelengths 800 x 10GE 800 x 10GE FIBER RELIEF: MIXED 40 GBPS AND 10 GBPS MULTIPLEXING OVER 100G The service provider has an optical link between locations or inside of a single large site that consists of a mix of 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps service, and the WDM system has run out of capacity. The customer needs more bandwidth between the sites, but is not able to lease or purchase additional fiber pairs or finds that wavelength optimization using aggregation is a more economical solution. To connect the two locations, MRV would propose using the OptiDriver optical network element equipped with 100 Gbps Muxponder interfaces. The OptiDriver Muxponder has the ability to flexibly multiplex 40 Gbps and 10 Gbps services onto the same service without restriction. The 40 Gbps interfaces are native QSFP+ pluggable optics, and all standard pluggable 40 Gbps optics are supported.. Customers do not need to know in advance what format will be required or what percentage of services will be 40 Gbps and what percentage will be 10 Gbps. A single muxponder can be used to combine one 40 Gbps and six 10 Gbps services, two 40 Gbps and two 10 Gbps services, or ten 10 Gbps services without a change of hardware or software. The only difference between configurations is the choice of client pluggable optics. 3

For applications where services need to be transported over a relatively short distance and has a dedicated fiber available per muxponder, MRV would propose using gray line optics on the Muxponder. Gray optics are a lower-cost limited reach solution that can be used to interconnect locations with a dedicated fiber. For a customer who needs to transport the services over a longer distance or more capacity per fiber, MRV would propose using DWDM line optics (Metro DWDM or Coherent) on the Muxponder. For higher capacity, Coherent line optics can be employed to expand the capacity of a single fiber pair beyond 8 Tbps with eighty or more services running on separate wavelengths. Pluggable interfaces connecting to the site hardware (switch or router, for example) would be chosen based on the existing equipment interfaces. All standard SFP+ and QSFP+ (SR4, LR4 or ER4) types are natively supported. Data Center #1 Data Center #2 8 Tbps Flexible mix of 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps 80 Wavelengths Flexible mix of 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps 100 GBPS DISTANCE EXTENSION The service provider needs to connect two devices with interfaces between two datacenters or other locations with high bandwidth requirements. The customer does not have a choice of long reach interfaces from their equipment vendors and/or has decided to purchase short-reach optics due to power or cost limitations. MRV offer two options for 100Gbps distance extension: the Transparent Transponder and the OTN Transponder. Which card to use depends on the application requirements and network demands. The Transparent Transponder is a simple, low power, 3R regenerating transponder that can be used to convert between any standard CFP types. When equipped with gray optics, the Transparent Transponder can be used as a single-service distance extension solution or a media converter between formats. The same card becomes a DWDM transponder or repeater when equipped with coherent CFPs incorporating OTN FEC on the line side(s). As the variety of CFPs with integrated OTN FEC is currently somewhat limited, the Transparent Transponder may offer fewer line optics options (e.g. no tunable metro DWDM optics support) than the OTN Transponder. However, as 100Gbps pluggable technology matures the Transparent Transponder will become increasingly attractive as a distance extension solution due to lower power and improved density of 100Gbps transponders per shelf. The OTN Transponder with integrated on-board OTN FEC capabilities offers advanced OTN functionality and the ability to use any standard CFP, including gray optics, metro DWDM optics, and coherent optics. The integrated OTN FEC can also extend the range of the line optics, allowing less expensive optics (e.g. 2 km optics) to be used over longer distances. When equipped with gray optics, the OTN Transponder can be used as a singleservice distance extension solution or a media converter between formats. The same card becomes a DWDM transponder when equipped with coherent CFPs incorporating OTN FEC on the line side. OptiDriver offers a configurable and modular solution to the distance extension application. The optimal choice of transponder and line optics would be determined by the number of services per fiber, the maximum span budget, compatibility with existing CFPs, and the overall solution cost. 4

Pluggable (CFP) interfaces connecting to the site hardware (switch or router, for example) would be chosen based on the existing equipment interfaces. All standard CFP types (SR10, LR10, LR4 and ER4) are supported. Enterprise Content Delivery Provider 100GBASE-SR10 Interface 20 km - 40 km 100GBASE-SR10 Interface 100 GBPS MEDIA CONVERSION There are two interfaces within a datacenter, internet exchange, or other location that need to be interconnected, but the fixed formats supported by the devices do not match. For example, the interface on one switch/router is SR10 (10 x 10 Gbps MMF) and the interface on the other switch/router is LR4 (4 x 25 Gbps SMF). This application could be solved using two transponders as in the solutions described above, but would be an expensive solution to a short-reach application. MRV s OptiDriver Transparent Transponder is uniquely suited for this application. The Transparent Transponder offers the ability to transparently convert from one interface type to another interface type by choosing appropriate pluggable optics (CFPs). Pluggable optics for both connections would be chosen based on the router interface. All standard CFP types (SR10, LR10, LR4 and ER4) are supported. Since most transponders in the industry assume long distance operation, FEC is generally introduced on the line side of the transponder. This operation converts a native Ethernet format on the client side of the transponder to a FEC-enhanced OTU4 format on the line side of the transponder, which does not meet the requirements for transparent conversion between Ethernet formats. To convert back to a Ethernet format, another bookend transponder would be required. MRV s OptiDriver 3R Transponder module does not include integrated FEC and can, therefore, be used as a single card converter. Data Center 100GBASE-SR10 Interface 100GBASE-LR4 Interface 5
