1 OVERVIEW Catalyst 6000 Family Enables New Business Models for Enterprise and Service Provider Multilayer Switch Feature Card (MSFC) and Policy Feature Card (PFC) The proliferation of Intranet/Internet-based applications is driving new business models such as e-commerce and e-learning, changing information flow, and converging voice, video and data traffic to a single network design. Delivered via intelligent IP services, these applications are transforming corporate-intranet and service-provider infrastructures into competitive tools key components of a company s overall success offering lower business costs, speeding information flow and providing scalable perhaps revenue-based services. These applications are also driving the need for higher-speed connectivity, forcing today s networks to deploy high-performance, intelligent multilayer switches capable of not only high-capacity routing, but the full complement of intelligent services such as security, traffic management and quality of service (QoS) all via hardware-based Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). However, as network managers strive to scale network services and bandwidth, cost containment is driving the need to integrate traditionally disparate campus-switch and Enterprise-wide area network (WAN) platforms, collapse traditionally separate voice/video and data networks into a single intelligent infrastructure, and employ cost-effective web-scaling techniques. Only by integrating all these functions into a single, multilayer-switching platform can Enterprise and Service Provider customers scale network services, and realize maximum financial benefit across the network either through decreased costs or increased revenue opportunities. Figure 1 Catalyst 6000 Family Addresses New World Networking through Functional Integration WAN Policy Network Web Appliances Catalyst 6000 Family: Intelligent Switching Infrastructure LAN PBX Directory Services Web Scaling Call PSTN The Catalyst 6000 Family continues to deliver industry-leading, integrated solutions for both Enterprise and Service Provider environments. With the availability of the new Catalyst 6000 Family MSFC and PFC, Cisco delivers milestones against a Catalyst 6000 Family roadmap focused on the following areas: Scalable, Intelligent Multilayer Switching for Enterprise and Internet Service Provider (ISP) Infrastructures Intelligent Server Switching and Web Scaling Technologies Integrated Voice Solutions Local area network (LAN)/WAN Integration Specific details of how the Catalyst 6000 Family offers solutions in each area are highlighted below. Page 1 of 5
2 Figure 2 Catalyst 6000 Family Supervisor Engine with PFC Card Enables Layer 3 and 4 Services for Premier Wiring-Closet and Intelligent Server Switching Figure 3 Catalyst 6000 Family Supervisor Engine with MSFC and PFC Cards Enable Routing and Layer 3 and 4 Services for Enterprise and Service Provider Intelligent Multilayer Services The MSFC and PFC provide the performance, scalability, and intelligent services of Cisco IOS software integrated into the Catalyst 6000 Family of switches for wiring-closet, Enterprise backbone, and Service Provider applications. The PFC is an integral part of the CiscoAssure end-to-end QoS and policy-based security solution. The PFC can identify user applications such as voice, enterprise resource planning (ERP), or multicast and classify traffic with the appropriate priority level. It also enables admission control in the wiring closet to prevent unauthorized applications from being allowed onto the network. The PFC supports advanced QoS features such as packet classification and marking, scheduling, policing, and congestion avoidance. The PFC delivers the intelligence to arbitrate traffic across various metrics such as application type, user, security, predetermined policy, etc., to insure that business-critical traffic is unaffected by unimportant applications such as network games. For example, a voice over IP (VoIP) packet can be given higher priority over, say, a Doom game packet. The PFC also enables admission control in the wiring closet to prevent unauthorized applications from being allowed onto the network, and supports hardware-based protocol filtering enabling intelligent broadcast control, increasing resource utilization and network performance. Furthermore, it supports the ability to redirect specific traffic to a selected port or group of ports. These features make the Catalyst 6000 Family switch the most advanced switch in the industry by providing enhanced intelligent network services at wire speeds. The MSFC in combination with the PFC provides 15 million packets per second of forwarding performance for IP, IPX, and IP Multicast traffic, in addition to supporting multiprotocol routing for AppleTalk, DecNet, and Vines for Enterprise customers. The MSFC supports a full complement of routing protocols to include Routed Information Protocol (RIP)-I & II, Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP), Enhanced IGRP (EIGRP), Border Gateway Protocol 4 (BGP4) (full Internet routes) and Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS) to address both Enterprise and Service Provider requirements. For high-availability, the MSFC also support Cisco IOS Hot Standby Routing Protocol (HSRP) for routing redundancy between MSFCs in the same chassis, across Catalyst 6000 Family switches, or between a Catalyst 6000 Family switch and a standalone Cisco router. Enterprise and Service Provider networks also require full-featured multilayer switching and services at line-rate speeds. The MSFC and PFC combination delivers hardware-based acceleration for Layer 2, 3, and 4 switching and services with no performance penalty. An example of this is the Cisco IOS Policy Routing feature. Policy Routing is a flexible mechanism whereby routing decisions are based on more information than just the destination address. For instance, a service provider might enable policy routing to allow certain packets to be routed a different way other than using the typical shortest-path route. Some possible applications for policy routing are to provide equal access, Page 2 of 5
3 protocol-sensitive routing, source-sensitive routing, routing based on interactive versus batch traffic, or routing based on dedicated links. The MSFC also supports traffic statistics-collection and accounting with no impact on switching performance. This data enable Enterprise customers to perform traffic engineering and monitor network performance, and provides Service Provider customers with resource-utilization data for billing and charge-back applications. Both MSFC and PFC are supported directly on a Catalyst 6000 Family Supervisor Engine providing investment protection and tighter coupling of Layer 2, 3, and 4 services. Future enhancements to the Catalyst 6000 Family will include increased switching performance, additional intelligent services based on Cisco IOS, and further integration of voice services. Intelligent Server Switching and Web Scaling Technologies Catalyst 6000 Family Accelerated Server Load Balancing The growing demand for mission-critical TCP/IP-based application services such as e-commerce, video, ERP, and is motivating companies to increase the availability and scalability of the network and server systems. Cost containment is also driving the need for intelligent server switching and caching techniques to cost-effectively scale the server complex and conserve WAN bandwidth, respectively. The Cisco LocalDirector assures continuous, high availability of content and applications with proven techniques for actively managing servers and connections in a distributed environment. By distributing user requests across a cluster of servers, LocalDirector optimizes responsiveness and system capacity, and dramatically reduces the cost of providing large-scale Internet, database, and application services. In addition, its integrated security device is capable of protecting servers from unauthorized access. Coupled with the PFC, the Cisco LocalDirector offers Enterprise customers and ISPs with a network-based intelligent server solution. Specifically, it is an integrated hardware and software solution that intelligently balances the load of user traffic across multiple TCP/IP application servers. LocalDirector tracks network sessions and server load conditions in real time, directing each session to the most appropriate server, maintaining high server availability. LocalDirector works in conjunction with today s PFC to deliver wire-speed traffic direction by populating the PFC flow cache, and eliminating the need for the LocalDirector to process every packet. This technique is known as Accelerated Server Load Balancing (SLB), and enables the Catalyst 6000 Family to deliver wire-speed server load balancing at rates of 15 million packets per second. Web Cache Aware Caching of Internet and Intranet content also conserves WAN and server-bandwidth need by locally and transparently caching frequently accessed content and then locally fulfilling successive requests for the same content. This eliminates contention for WAN resources, speeds server response times, and slows the need for increased and expensive WAN connectivity and additional web servers. Catalyst 6000 Family switches equipped with MSFCs provide transparent Web Cache redirection using Cisco s Web Cache Communication Protocol (WCCP) v2. WCCP is the industry s leading web-cache redirection protocol that localizes network traffic and provides network-intelligent load distribution across multiple network caches for maximized content availability. Coupled with IP-telephony handsets from Cisco, customers can now realize the financial benefits of a converged voice/video/data wiring-closet. Two networks are collapsed into a single, intelligent IP-based network for more cost-effective moves, adds, and changes, decreased management staff, and access to new web-based multiservice applications such as video on demand (VoD), NetMeeting, and click-to-call applications. All Catalyst 6000 Family switches also support the power infrastructure to supply power to every 10/100 port to power next-generation IP-telephony handsets. This is similar to how traditional handsets operate today, and means that no chassis upgrade will be required as today s Catalyst 6000 Family customers adopt campus telephony solutions. Linecard modules also provide extensive per-port queuing to guarantee that voice traffic is given highest priority. Dedicated voice queues can be configured such that QoS is maintained end-to-end through the switch and across the network. Network resilience features such as Layer 2 and 3 load balancing, redundant system elements, and fast failover mechanisms maintain high system-level availability similar to traditional PBX systems. 5 LAN/WAN Integration Catalyst 6000 Family switches are scaling to offer the same set of services offered by traditional WAN-edge routers, namely security, traffic management, and QoS mechanisms. With support for extensive services (including BGP4 and IS-IS), as well as traffic management features such as traffic shaping and policing on today s MSFC, customers are well positioned to take advantage of WAN-connectivity options on Catalyst 6000 Family switches. Convergence of LAN and WAN technologies into a single integrated platform simplifies network design, decreases rack space requirements, and provides cost advantages over provisioning separate platforms. This trend has been realized on other Cisco platforms such as the Cisco 7200 and 7500 routers, where channel service unit (CSU)/ data service units (DSUs), time-division multiplexing (TDM) bandwidth management, and mainframe-connectivity functionality have been integrated into a single platform, saving capital outlay, decreasing operational and management expense, and increasing revenue opportunities. Future WAN enhancements to the Catalyst 6000 Family include asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and Packet-over- SONET (PoS) connectivity options, focused at OC-3 rates and above. Summary Campus networks continue to evolve to meet the demands of new networked applications, the bandwidth they consume, and the policies to enforce fairness and security throughout the network. Network managers are faced with the task to intelligently manage traffic loads, contain equipment and management, and plan for future growth. To help customers cost-effectively scale network applications and the respective infrastructure, the Catalyst 6000 Family continues to scale intelligent switching and consolidate functionality, offering new solutions for customers to contain costs, increase revenue opportunities, and increase their competitive edge.
