Introduction Overview The FLASHWAVE 4010 remote extension device is an OC-3 access module. The device uses low power and is easy to operate, simplifying the provisioning of carrier-grade or DS3 services. Provided in a number of configurations, the FLASHWAVE 4010 device is a single, fully enclosed unit. Compact size and plug-and-play service delivery make the FLASHWAVE 4010 system an ideal solution for profitably extending SONET farther into the edge of the network and to office premises. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device provides an advanced feature set that reduces the complexity of installing and turning up new services. New or DS3 services can be provisioned in four easy steps: 1. Mount the system on the wall or in a cabinet or rack 2. Apply power 3. Connect the or DS3 service and OC-3 fibers 4. Set the node identifier, time and date The combination of one low-cost unit and a simplified turn-up process dramatically reduces the cost of delivering services at new customer locations. The Network Element (NE) automatically creates all the required facilities, synchronization and cross-connects needed to deliver service to a customer. The system delivers or DS3 services in a 1+1 terminal network architecture. A single system command changes the NE to support a Unidirectional Path Switched Ring (UPSR) configuration. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device greatly reduces Capital Expenses (CAPEX) and Operational Expenses (OPEX) without sacrificing the Fujitsu standards of carrier-class reliability and capabilities. The system provides extensive SONET capabilities, NEBS Level 3 compliance and temperature-hardened operations ( 40 to +65 C). The single enclosure design and straightforward product architecture provide the highest level of reliability. 1.1

Business Considerations Dramatic Reduction in Capital and Operational Expenses The FLASHWAVE 4010 device is available in four configurations, each of which is cost optimized to deliver only the services your customers need. The device dramatically cuts operational expenses by: Eliminating the need to purchase, stock or spare extra plug-in units because of the single enclosure design Reducing network-planning complexities and technician training time with a simple architecture Decreasing time to market for new services with a plug-and-play installation Minimizing recurring operational costs such as power and floor space with low power consumption and small size This simple solution significantly lowers the cost of delivering or DS3 services, allowing you to expand your business to never before reached markets and customers. Eliminate Ordering and Stocking Complexities Today s SONET Add/Drop Multiplexers (ADMs) require that you order, install and spare multiple parts such as common units, line optics, service units and fans to a get a fully-functional NE. ADMs provide a great deal of flexibility when offering multiple services out of the same platform, however, this flexibility can become burdensome and costly when only a low number of or DS3 services are needed. In these cases, a single, fully enclosed unit that is optimized for a low quantity of service interfaces is the most desirable solution. With a single part number to provide a fully configured module, the FLASHWAVE 4010 device provides the optimal solution with no extra plug-in units to install or spare. Improve Time to Market The FLASHWAVE 4010 device can be mounted on a wall or in a rack or lockable enclosure. With a weight of approximately 3.5 pounds, the FLASHWAVE 4010 device can easily be transported and installed by one technician. The wall-mount installation process takes less than two minutes and consists of the following steps: Attach the wall-mount brackets to the FLASHWAVE 4010 unit with six screws Mount the unit to the wall with four wood screws Connect the external cables including power, OC-3 fibers, and or DS3 cables 3.1
Business Considerations Once the product is installed and the power and other external cabling are connected, the NE will automatically create all entities needed to provide the or DS3 service. The technician s only tasks are to change the node identifier and set the time and date. The system software creates all necessary equipment and facilities, crossconnects, synchronization and Data Communication Channel (DCC) connections. This plug-and-play installation and turn-up drastically cuts the time to market for new services at customer locations, allowing the service provider to quickly satisfy demand with minimal expense. Upon initial turn-up, the NE is automatically configured in a 1+1 terminal configuration. If a UPSR configuration is prefered, a single system command changes the NE s operating mode to UPSR. The technician is then free to add/drop a or DS3 from any STS or VT1.5 time slot on the OC-3 ring. Minimize Training and Simplify Your Network The straightforward architecture of the FLASHWAVE 4010 device simplifies the training process and improves the technician s productivity. Technicians and operations personnel can be trained on-site in a couple of hours, eliminating the need to send them to an off-site training location for several days. Likewise, planners responsible for determining how the network is put together can be rapidly trained to significantly reduce network-planning time. 3.2 Reduce Recurring Operational Charges The dimensions of the FLASHWAVE 4010 device are 9 x 3.5 x 11". When mounted on a wall, the device takes up roughly the surface area of a normal piece of paper. This compact size allows the FLASHWAVE 4010 device to be deployed in places where typical NEs cannot, freeing up valuable space for other required equipment. The device consumes a maximum of 21 watts, dramatically reducing the recurring operational costs associated with providing power and cooling for the equipment. Eliminate Dependence on Copper Infrastructure for Services private line has been one of the most popular and profitable services for several years. Carriers have been using repeatered T1 or High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (HDSL) technology to provide this service to their customers over existing copper facilities. Unfortunately, the transmission power levels and higher frequencies required to support bidirectional, megabit transmission speeds often result in crosstalk between adjacentcopper pairs. This crosstalk renders the entire copper binder group unavailable for other high-speed services such as Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). Service providers must be extremely selective about where various types of high-speed circuits are installed so they do not prevent deployment of other types f services. The FLASHWAVE 4010 platform allows service deployment to be moved into the optical domain, eliminating potential interference with other revenue-generating services. Carriers realize OPEX savings by eliminating the need to closely manage the usage of their copper facilities.
Business Considerations Carrier-Class Reliability and Capabilities The FLASHWAVE 4010 system cuts CAPEX and OPEX without sacrificing the Fujitsu standards of carrier-class reliability and capabilities. The single enclosure design and straightforward product architecture provide the highest level of reliability. The system provides extensive carrier-class SONET capabilities from Fujitsu including: Extensive Operation, Administration, Maintenance and Provisioning (OAM&P) capabilities with full Performance Monitoring (PM) support and loop backs Synchronization timing from the OC-3 line or internal Stratum-3 clock Less than 50 ms SONET protection switching NEBS Level 3 compliance and temperature-hardened operations ( 40 to +65 C) Telcordia TIRKS, NMA and Transport support NETSMART 1500 Element Management Software (EMS) integration Flexible Operations Support Like all Fujitsu transport products, the FLASHWAVE 4010 device can be monitored from a centralized location with support from the Fujitsu NETSMART 1500 EMS. With full OSMINE compliance, the FLASHWAVE 4010 device is also supported by the Telcordia network management systems. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device communicates with OSS products and other NEs using standard protocols over the SONET DCC. This extensive OAM&P communications capability and compatibility with existing Fujitsu products allows you to manage entire networks from a single location. Use our NETSMART 1500 EMS and NETSMART 500 or FLEXR GT craft interface software to download new software features and functions to the FLASHWAVE 4010 device either locally or remotely using the SONET DCC as the distribution channel. This function expedites and simplifies the software update distribution process for an entire network. As new software releases become available, you can easily load them into the FLASHWAVE 4010 modules remotely without having to visit each site. 3.3

Product Applications Product Capabilities Fujitsu has leveraged its extensive SONET and fiber-optic experience in the design of the FLASHWAVE 4010 device. Packed with advanced capabilities that reduce your engineering, installation and maintenance effort, the FLASHWAVE 4010 device provides a low-cost, plug-and-play solution for extending SONET farther into the edge of the network. New services can now be offered to your customers at a price and delivery speed never before possible. Network Architectures Supported The FLASHWAVE 4010 device s design supports numerous network architectures. This flexibility offers you a low-cost solution that can adapt to meet changing needs and allow carriers to tailor the platform to individual network requirements. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device supports 1+1 and UPSR architectures, which allows tremendous flexibility in the design and application of loop networks. These architectures provide protection from a fiber cut or equipment failure in a network. With the advanced STS and VT1.5 cross-connect capabilities of the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 4000 series products, multiple FLASHWAVE 4010 NEs can be hubbed into one FLASHWAVE 4500, FLASHWAVE 4300 or FLASHWAVE 4100 platform, driving down the cost and time to deliver new or DS3 services to your customers. 4.1
Product Applications UPSR Configuration UPSR configurations are typically used in loop applications, where most of the traffic is routed to a single hub node. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device supports UPSR applications for OC-3 optical facilities. In UPSR, protected traffic is sent in either direction around the ring. The receiving node monitors the quality of both received signals and switches to the higher quality signal if there is a fiber cut, signal degradation or node failure. Switching is performed locally at each node, providing the fastest switch times. 4.2 PROTECTED WORKING NODE A NODE A PROTECTED WORKING NODE D OC-3 NODE B NODE C NODE C Path Selector Figure 4.1: Protected Traffic in a Simple UPSR Network
Product Applications Terminal Configuration The terminal configuration provides point-to-point networks with 1+1 fiber protection. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device supports 1+1 configurations for its OC-3 optical facilities. All traffic inserted at one end is dropped at the other end. In terminal configurations, the working and protected optical transmitters send identical information. At the receive end of the system, the quality of both incoming signals is evaluated. Automatic Protection Switching (APS) occurs when signal degradation or Loss Of Signal (LOS) is detected on the active channel, providing an extra degree of network survivability when using a redundant fiber path. 4.3 OC-3, DS3 Figure 4.2: Protected Traffic in a Simple Terminal (1+1) Network
Product Applications Product Applications The combination of one low cost unit, a simplified turn-up process, small size and low power allows the FLASHWAVE 4010 device to be deployed anywhere. Central Office Extension to Customer Premises The FLASHWAVE 4010 device is ideal for extending the SONET network to a small business customer or cell site location directly from the central office. With its compact size and low power consumption, the FLASHWAVE 4010 device has few restrictions on where it can be placed, providing a simple solution to offer or DS3 services across an OC-3 connection. In Figure 4.3, each FLASHWAVE 4010 device is connected by a point-to-point OC-3 fiber to an OC-3 port on a FLASHWAVE 4000 series or FLM product at the central office. The central office node can be used to terminate the traffic from and manage several FLASHWAVE 4010 nodes, minimizing the equipment needed in the central office and further improving the economics of delivering or DS3 services to the customer. If fiber routing permits, a UPSR network architecture allows improved fiber utilization for this application. The protected configurations provide a second OC-3 interface to prevent traffic disruption due to a fiber cut when diverse routes are used. The optical signal is sent across two distinct physical paths, allowing the network to withstand a failure or a degradation of a single path. If the number of fibers is limited or a less expensive solution is needed, the unprotected configurations provide a single, unprotected OC-3 interface. 4.4 Building A DS3 Building B OC-3 Building C DS3 Interoffice Facility Network Central Office Figure 4.3: Central Office Extension to Customer Premises
Product Applications Remote Terminal Extension to Customer Premises The FLASHWAVE 4010 device can extend the reach of copper/coax-based or DS3 services from a Controlled Environmental Vault (CEV) or other types of remote terminals into the customer premises. Figure 4.4 shows three FLASHWAVE 4010 devices connected to a FLASHWAVE 4100 node in a CEV in a UPSR configuration. The FLASHWAVE 4100 node operates as an optical OC-3 hub to groom the traffic from multiple FLASHWAVE 4010 nodes into an OC-3, OC-12 or OC-48 connection to the central office. The switch fabric capabilities of the FLASHWAVE 4000 series products allow VT1.5 and STS grooming to occur as close as possible to the customer premises to maximize the network bandwidth. The FLASHWAVE 4010 device provides a simple, economically feasible solution for extending or DS3 services past the limited reach of copper or coax with an added benefit of SONET PM and DCC connectivity all the way to the customer premises.
