4 Overview In this sectin HP PrLiant Essentials Intelligent Netwrking Pack Intrductin... 4 HP PrLiant Essentials Intelligent Netwrking Pack Intrductin The HP PrLiant Essentials Intelligent Netwrking Pack-Windws Editin is part f the PrLiant Essentials sftware family and is integrated with HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM), SmartStart, and HP Management agents. The Intelligent Netwrking Pack (INP) prvides advanced capabilities that allw servers t practively adapt t netwrking infrastructure prblems thus imprving server availability and netwrk perfrmance. The Intelligent Netwrking Pack Windws Editin includes: Virus Thrttle a netwrk packet-filtering feature that helps slw dwn the spread f viruses n yur system. Virus Thrttle mnitrs all utbund cnnectin requests and cunts the number f unique cnnectins. It detects abnrmal ("virus-like") behavir in the requests, and slws dwn excessive cnnectin requests t new hsts until yu can determine if they are viral in nature and take actin Advanced redundancy and teaming capabilities, including: Active Path Failver an advanced redundancy feature that allws a PrLiant server t detect blcked paths and t redirect data alng an unblcked path t the cre netwrk. Fast Path Failver an advanced redundancy feature that allws a PrLiant server t use the quickest path t the cre netwrk (r the rt bridge). Ruter Path Failver an advanced redundancy feature that allws a PrLiant server t detect a blcked path t a ruter and t redirect packets alng an unblcked path t a ruter. Dual Channel Lad Balancing a special type f teaming that allws the creatin f tw teams, called grups, inside f a single team. Each grup is assigned ne r mre teamed prts and can be cnnected t a different switch t prvide switch fault tlerance. Full inbund and utbund lad balancing is prvided acrss bth grups. Shuld any grup cmpletely fail, caused by a failure f all teamed prts in the grup r by a failure f the grup's switch, the team remains available thrugh the ther grup. Tw types f Dual Channel Lad Balancing teams can be cnfigured: Switch-assisted Dual Channel Lad Balancing teams and 802.3ad Dynamic Dual Channel Lad Balancing teams. Dual Channel Netwrk Fault Tlerance a special type f teaming that allws the creatin f tw teams, called grups, inside f a single team. All team members within each grup are dynamically placed int a prt-trunk/channel by dynamic Link Aggregatin Cntrl Prtcl (LACP) agreement with the switch. A failure f a team member t synchrnize jining a prt-trunk r channel with the switch is treated as an errr and that team member is cnsidered failed. Dynamic Dual Channel Netwrk Fault Tlerance (NFT) prvides the safety f additinal backup links between the server and hub/switch. Dynamic Dual Channel NFT is implemented with ne channel team prviding a primary adapter and anther channel team prviding a secndary, Overview 4

12 Using Virus Thrttle In this sectin Hw Virus Thrttle wrks Installing Virus Thrttle fr Windws Mnitring Virus Thrttle status Virus Thrttle Status and Cnfiguratin Utility Hw Virus Thrttle wrks Viruses typically spread by cnnecting t as many different machines as pssible. Virus Thrttle is a netwrk packet-filtering feature that mnitrs all utbund cnnectin requests. Virus Thrttle helps t stp the spread f viruses n yur system by detecting abnrmal "virus like" behavir in the requests. It slws dwn excessive cnnectin requests t new hsts until yu can determine if they are viral in nature and take actin. Virus Thrttle allws the netwrk infrastructure t stay up and running by slwing traffic n systems that exhibit high cnnectin rates and frequent cnnectins t new hsts. When yu install Virus Thrttle n yur system, the Virus Thrttle netwrk NDIS filter driver is inserted int all existing prtcl-t-miniprt bindings and all netwrk traffic passes thrugh it. Virus Thrttle prvides TCP and UDP supprt. The driver maintains a delay queue f cnnectin requests fr each instance f the netwrk prtcl stack and a list f knwn hsts that have established cnnectins. The driver examines all utbund cnnectin requests and determines if the request is fr a knwn hst. If knwn, the request is passed dwn the prtcl stack as a nrmal request. If unknwn, the request is added t the delay queue. Peridically, the delay queue is examined and the ldest request is remved and passed dwn the prtcl stack. High and lw water marks r pre-set threshlds are maintained fr the delay queue and are used t determine when "virus-like" behavir is ccurring r has stpped. High water mark When the rate f cnnectin requests exceeds the rate f the driver remving them frm the delay queue, a high water mark in the queue is exceeded and the driver indicates "virus-like" activity. Lw water mark When the rate f cnnectin requests drps s that the number f queue entries fall belw a lw water mark, the driver indicates that the "virus-like" activity has stpped. When "virus-like" activity is detected r has stpped, Virus Thrttle sends a Windws Management Instrumentatin (WMI) event ntificatin t the administratr. If HP Management agents are installed and cnfigured crrectly, a Simple Netwrk Management Prtcl (SNMP) trap warning is als sent t the administratr. Installing Virus Thrttle fr Windws T install Virus Thrttle fr Windws using the HP cmpnent pack executable file: 1. G t the HP website ( Using Virus Thrttle 12

These basic redundancy mechanisms mnitr each teamed prt fr link, the ability t transmit a frame, and the ability t receive a frame. Three advanced redundancy features, Active Path Failver, Fast Path Failver, and Ruter Path Failver are available thrugh the INP. These features allw servers t practively adapt t netwrking infrastructure prblems. These features are available fr all team types except Switch assisted Lad Balancing with Fault Tlerance (SLB) and 802.3ad Dynamic with Fault Tlerance teams. Using advanced netwrking features 25

26 Active Path Failver Active Path Failver allws a PrLiant server t predict and bypass failed netwrk paths thrugh use f a user assigned ech nde. An ech nde is a device n the netwrk with which cnnectivity is required. Peridically, each team member transmits an Address Reslutin Prtcl (ARP) request packet t the ech nde. If a respnse is nt received frm the ech nde within a set timeut perid, the team member is marked as failed. If Active Path Failver is enabled, yu must enter a valid IP address fr the ech nde. In additin, yu can specify the MAC address f the ech nde, which allws the ech nde packets t be unicast t the ech nde. If n Ech Nde MAC address is prvided, the ech nde packets are bradcast. Tw types f ech nde request prbes are available: Cmmunity Address ARP-(Recmmended) Cmmunity Address ARP is a newer methd that uses a standard ARP t test cnnectivity. It wrks fr all devices designated as the ech nde including ruters, Ht Standby Ruting Prtcl (HSRP) devices, and Linux servers. If Cmmunity Address ARP is selected, yu must enter the IP address t be used fr the cmmunity prbe. Yu can als cnfigure the MAC address t be used, r use the default MAC address. Directed ARP-Directed ARP tests cnnectivity with the ech nde device using a mdified ARP frame. This methd wrks fr mst switches r servers that are designated as the ech nde. It is nt recmmended fr ruters r Linux servers that are designated as the ech nde. Fast Path Failver Fast Path Failver allws a PrLiant server t determine the fastest path t the cre netwrk (r the rt bridge) in additin t detecting full cnnectivity lss. Fast Path Failver examines the path cst infrmatin cntained in the Spanning Tree Bridge Prtcl Data Unit (BPDU) frames and determines which switch is the best ne t use fr the team's primary prt. When cnfiguring Fast Path Failver, yu must select which Spanning Tree Prtcl (STP) type t use. The tw predminate STP types are as fllws: IEEE 802.1D Because IEEE 802.1D is VLAN unaware, it is nt necessary t cnfigure Fast Path Failver t listen t VLAN. Cisc PVST+ Allws yu t select the VLAN ID t be used fr Fast Path Failver mnitring. (Refer t "Cnfiguring VLAN IDs.") Ruter Path Failver Ruter Redundancy Prtcls (HSRP, VRRP) allw yu t set up tw r mre ruters int a single ruter grup, which acts as a backup fr a virtual ruter. At any given time, nly ne ruter is designated as the active ruter, which takes up the functinality f the ruter. If the active ruter fails, a secnd ruter r standby ruter assumes the rle f the active ruter. If the standby ruter fails r becmes the active ruter, then anther ruter is elected as the standby ruter. The Ruter Path Failver ensures the team's cnnectivity t the active ruter. The ruter prtcl, as selected by the user, defines the methd used t select the active ruter by peridically exchanging multicast frames amngst ruters in a ruter grup. The NCU teaming sftware mnitrs these multicast frames t validate an active path t the active ruter in the ruter grup. When cnfiguring Ruter Path Failver, yu must select which ruter prtcl t use. The tw prtcls available are as fllws: HSRP Cisc Ht Standby Ruter Prtcl VRRP Virtual Ruter Redundancy Prtcl Using advanced netwrking features 26

27 Cnfiguring Active Path Failver Active Path Failver is enabled thrugh the Team Prperties Advanced Redundancy tab. This feature is disabled if a valid INP license is nt installed n the system. Select the Active Path Failver ptin t enable it. Active Path Failver allws a team member t send a packet t a remte nde (called the ech nde) and receive a reply t determine that the team member sending the packet has a path t the nde. The absence f a reply within the specified time perid can be used t determine when a team member des nt have a path t the ech nde. The default setting is disabled. If Active Path Failver is enabled, yu must enter a valid IP address fr the ech nde. Entering an Ech Nde MAC address is ptinal. 5. Click the Ech Nde Respnse Mechanism list and select the type f ech nde request prbe t be sent. Cmmunity Address ARP-(Recmmended) Tests cnnectivity using a standard ARP. This methd wrks fr all devices designated as the ech nde including ruters, HSRP devices, and Linux servers. If Cmmunity Address ARP is selected, yu must enter the IP address t be used fr the cmmunity prbe. Yu can als cnfigure the MAC address t be used r use the MAC address default. The advantage f using Cmmunity Address ARP is that it wrks n all ech nde types. Using advanced netwrking features 27

28 Directed ARP-Tests cnnectivity with the ech nde device using a mdified ARP. This methd wrks fr mst switches r servers that are designated as the ech nde. It is nt recmmended fr ruters r Linux servers. The advantage f using Directed ARP is that less cnfiguratin f parameters is required. 6. In the Ech Nde IP Address bx type the IP address f the ech nde. 7. Click the Ech Nde Prbe Interval list and select the interval at which packets are transferred t the ech nde. The default setting is 3 secnds. 8. (Optinal) Type the MAC address f the ech nde in the Ech Nde MAC Address bx. Prviding an ech nde MAC address allws the ech nde packets t be unicast t the ech nde. If n ech nde MAC address is prvided, the ech nde packets are bradcast. 9. In the Ech Nde Prbe Timeut bx, select the maximum time t wait fr a respnse frm the ech nde befre cnsidering the team member failed. The default setting is 3 secnds. The timeut value must be less than r equal t the prbe interval. If a larger value is entered fr the timeut, it is autmatically set t the prbe interval when yu click OK. 10. If Cmmunity Address ARP is the ech nde respnse mechanism, type the IP address t be used in the Cmmunity Prbe IP Address bx. This must be a valid and unique IP address n the same netwrk as the team. All servers n the same netwrk using this mechanism can have the same Cmmunity Prbe IP address. This bx is nt used fr Directed ARP prbes. 11. Select the Use Default checkbx t use the default setting f FA-FE-FE-FE r type the MAC address in the Cmmunity Prbe MAC Address bx. 12. Click OK t save all changes and return t the NCU Main windw.
