2 Introduction The past few decades have marked a significant change in the way we do business. Organizations have expanded to having universal presence anywhere in the world and in consequence, business strategies and opportunities have become fast, dynamic and rapidly changing. Today, operations must be streamlined across multiple time zones and data centers and leading organizations must adapt to the fact that business never stops. Organization must allow employees to work anytime and from anywhere in the world, granting them accelerated and secured access to business critical application, otherwise, an opportunity can be missed in an instant, causing severe financial consequences and reputation damage to the organization. With the release of Microsoft s Exchange Server 2003 comes an updated version of Outlook Web Access (OWA) - a critical application for any organization seeking to stay up float and successfully compete in the business world of our era. Organizations who deploy Exchange Server 2003 allow their employees 24/7 access their s, calendars, attachments and contacts, all of which are business critical communications, contributing to the business success of organizations. The growing reliance of employees on such applications has increased expectation for faster than ever usage capabilities but has also grown concerns for IT professionals, mostly relating to security breaches as well as cost aspects. Radware s Application Front End (AFE) solution, comprised of the award winning AppXcel and AppDirector, can make the deployment of Microsoft s Exchange Server 2003 a businesssmart one, by providing answers to many of the concerns raised. Radware s AFE solution provides a comprehensive set of acceleration tools (such as Web and image compression, object caching, wireless TCP, TCP optimization and SSL acceleration etc.) to improve availability and performance of all Web based applications while ensuring the best service performance levels for all type of users (PDAs, wireless, broadband, etc.). The traffic is constantly load balanced and directed to the best performing server while intrusion prevention and denial of service protection is provided as well. This means that business critical applications such as OWA are always available and employees can access their outlook application, from any type of computer, anywhere and anytime, without having to experience interferences such as slow response time or downtime. Transparent work time for the organization s globally dispersed employees means better results and greater global success. Being also a scalable solution, AFE supports the future business growth of any organization and is most definitely a business smart solution. For more information, please visit: and 2

3 Solution Details The suggested solution uses 2 Microsoft Exchange OWA servers for the application logic processing. Radware's 2 AppDirectors and 2 AppXcels are installed in front of the Microsoft Exchange OWA in order to provide availability, acceleration and protection: - AppDirector continuously monitors the operational status of the Microsoft Exchange OWA server application - AppDirector intelligently distributes the application transactions between the Microsoft Exchange OWA servers, making sure that all the transactions that belong to the same web session will reach the same Microsoft Exchange OWA server - AppDirector intercepts HTTP/HTTPS traffic and forwards it to the AppXcel devices - AppXcel terminates HTTPS connections and connects to the server using HTTP, offloading the encryption / decryption processing from the server, and saving on server resources - AppXcel compresses HTTP objects to accelerate the response time for the clients, mostly important for reducing the download time of long mails - The dual AppDirector and AppXcel are providing a highly available solution with no single point of failure - AppDirector further allows for geographical redundancy of OWA servers in multiple Data Centers, for transparent disaster recovery and business continuity (Not demonstrated) - AppDirector secures the OWA servers from Denial of Service attacks by providing Intrusion detection and flood mitigation (Not demonstrated) How it works The AppDirector announces a Virtual IP address that represents the OWA service. The enterprise DNS should resolve the hostname "owa.company.com" to that Virtual IP (AppDirector VIP). The clients open an HTTP or HTTPS session to the AppDirector VIP. The AppDirector chooses one of the AppXcel appliances and forwards the connection to that AppXcel. The AppXcel establishes the connection to get the request from the client. The AppXcel terminates the SSL connection (if encrypted). Then, the AppXcel forwards the decrypted request back to the AppDirector. The AppDirector recognizes whether the request belongs to an existing application session or not (by the session ID), selects a server and forwards the request to the selected server. On the response, the AppDirector receives the response from the server. If the response includes a new session ID the AppDirector learns it. The response goes back through the AppXcel device, which compresses the object and then encrypts it. It goes back to the client through the AppDirector. Note that the whole process is transparent to the servers that communicate with the client IP and the client who makes the whole communication with the Virtual service IP address. 3

4 Important Notes: - SSL with Select Server mode - remember enabling the SSL session ID Tracking on the AppDirector for persistent session redirection to the AppXcel devices - The setup can be installed as a global solution with many sites. - If a Hardware card is installed in the AppXcel please use Hardware based compression in the Compression field. - The AppXcel maintains two separate tunnels, for encrypted and for nonencrypted sessions - In SSL mode an HTTP Header should be inserted to the Client request named "FRONT-END-HTTPS: on" (When HTTP is used to access data, back-end servers need to generate absolute URLs, such as a list of URLs for the messages in a user's inbox. If SSL is used between the client and the frontend server, the back-end server needs to know this, so it can formulate URLs using HTTPS instead of HTTP. If SSL decryption is done on the front-end server, the front-end server knows SSL was used, and it notifies the back-end server of this by passing an HTTP header that says, "Front-End-Https: on" in all requests to the back-end server. If there is a separate server between the client and the front-end server that is offloading the SSL decryption, the front-end server is unaware that the original request was made using SSL. In this case, that server must be able to pass the "Front-End-Https: on" header to the front-end server, which then passes it to the back-end server.) Software and Hardware The following is a list of hardware and Multimedia software tested to verify the interoperabilty of the presented solution: Radware s AppDirector v Radware s AppXcel v.1.09 Web Client: Windows MS Explorer 6.0, 7.0 Application Server : Microsoft Exchange OWA
