4 1.0 Introduction This Document describes the functionality of the C-Bus CBTI and a step through guide of the Software. 2.0 Description The C-Bus CBTI offers a dial in and dial out facility, allowing control and status monitoring for a C-Bus system. It also includes an audio output, so that C-Bus events can be audibly announced. The CBTI is programmed using a connection to a PC running special configuration software. The interface to the PC also permits the CBTI to be made transparent, so it can also act as a 5500PC C-Bus PC Interface. Thus, using the CBTI, C-Bus can be programmed and configured either locally or from a remote site using a data modem. The CBTI is suitable for connection to the telephone network using a Mode 3 connection, in parallel, or by insertion into the local circuit. It can be installed either as a stand-alone item with connection to C-Bus, or installed into a Clipsal StarServe cabinet. The CBTI has an R.E.N of The CBTI unit comes with the following: 12V DC plug pack (5100TAU version only) RS232 cable (DB9F to DB9M), 2 metres RJ45 patch lead, 300mm RJ12 patch leads (2 off), 1metre Installation instructions CD in slip-in cover: CBTI Configuration software PDF files of the configuration manual, installation and user instructions Software licence agreement Warranty and registration card Copyright 2003 Clipsal Integrated Systems Pty Ltd Page 4

6 4.1 Power supply The CBTI requires the connection of a 12V DC plug pack (2.1mm plug with centre pin +VE) and draws 300mA 500mA. 4.2 C-Bus requirements The CBTI draws 18mA (nominal) of current from the C-Bus network. The unit comes supplied with two RJ45 sockets for connection to C-Bus for loop in and loop out function. 4.3 PC RS232 Serial port The RS232 port allows direct programming of the CBTI. The CBTI can also be used as a PC interface for programming of the network via the C-Bus installation software. 4.4 Telephone Networks Line In Used for the connection to the telephone network. This connector is also wired so that the Primary Phone Out signals are available, permitting a simple and clean Mode 3 connection (for more information on mode3 connection please refer to appendix 5.2). 4.5 Primary Telephone Line Out Used for connection to local telephone devices, for example handsets. These local devices can be used for control of the C-Bus CBTI Copyright 2003 Clipsal Integrated Systems Pty Ltd Page 6

7 4.6 Secondary Phone Line out Used for connection to local telephone devices, for example fax and answering machines. These devices cannot be used for control of the C-Bus CBTI. Additionally, these devices are switched off when the C-Bus CBTI is being controlled by a device attached to the Primary Phone Out. 4.7 Audio In Currently the CBTI does not support the Audio in function. 4.8 Audio out Audio out allows connection to an audio device i.e. amplifier connected to speakers to announce messages and prompts from the CBTI Copyright 2003 Clipsal Integrated Systems Pty Ltd Page 7

8 5.0 Connection Methods of the CBTI 5.1 Parallel A parallel connection is the simplest. Using this connection, the CBTI cannot take over the line for dialling out. Use of the local telephones for programming may be possible, but is not recommended due to the constant, loud, telephone company dial tones and the possible interference when DTMF tones (or decadic dialling pulses) are forwarded into the telephone network. This type of connection is shown in Figure 2. 9 5.2 Mode 3 (or line Grabber) A mode 3 connection requires a special mode 3 socket connection, installed by the Telephone Company. A mode 3 connection loops the telephone line through the CBTI, which can take over the line. All other telephones are downstream of the mode 3 connection point. This type of connection is shown in Figure 3. The CBTI Phone In connector takes the incoming telephone line, and also returns the mode 3 switched signals. These are the same as the Primary Phone Out signals. The mode 3 connection allows control of the C-Bus CBTI using local telephone handsets. Fax and answering machines can be connected directly to the Secondary Phone Out connector, ensuring they are isolated if the local handsets are used to control the C-Bus CBTI. 10 5.2.1 Wiring Of A Mode 3 Modes 3 connections allows the CBTI to cut-off any existing devices (eg. phones, faxes) and seize the telephone line for its own use. This application is more commonly used for a security system. 11 5.3 Insertion Into Local Circuit The C-Bus CBTI can be inserted into the local telephone distribution circuit. In this case, it would be installed in a telephone distribution cabinet (for example, Clipsal StarServe), and forms the primary point at which the external telephone network is terminated. The behaviour is the same as mode 3, but the connection is slightly different. This type of connection is shown in Figure 5. The Phone In connector takes the incoming telephone line. The Primary Phone Out and Secondary Phone Out connectors are connected to the local telephone distribution system. This approach is functionally the same as the mode 3 connection, but with simple wiring using only RJ-12 style patch leads. As before, the Secondary Phone Out connection should be used for fax and answering machines, which could otherwise be interfered with when a handset is used for local control of the C-Bus CBTI. 12 5.4 Telephone Connection when Security Systems are also used When a security system is to be used with the C-Bus CBTI, it is important that the correct connection is made to the telephone system. A security system should always be connected using mode 3, and be the first device in the line from the Telephone Network. This makes the security system the master device, and allows it to take control of the telephone line at any time. Copyright 2003 Clipsal Integrated Systems Pty Ltd Page 12

13 6.0 Performance Parameters The CBTI will do the following; Make outgoing calls in response to Lighting application group changes, Control application Trigger change and in future security application events. Accept incoming calls to monitor and control devices Allow local telephones to monitor and control C-bus devices Dial in access to control C-Bus devices Dial in via modem access to the C-Bus system to allow the user to make changes to the remote C-Bus network. Using C-Bus configuration software. Allow multiple users (8) to access the system remotely (only one user at a time). Allow basic changes in the CBTI configuration settings via a remote or local telephone. Allow the user to extract the CBTI History log last 10 dial in and 10 dial outs. (This is in future release) 6.1 Modes The CBTI has two modes Home and Away. The user can set devices to behave in different ways depending on which mode the CBTI is in. For example if the device lounge light is triggered in Home Mode the CBTI could be set to announce the state of the device i.e. on or off via the audio out. However, if the device was triggered in Away mode the CBTI could be set to send a notification message reporting a zone has been tripped. 6.2 Dialling in options The CBTI offers the facility to remotely access the C-Bus system (either via a remote phone line or a local phone), and allow the user to Monitor and control the C-Bus devices. Depending on the user profile the CBTI will also allow the user to modify the CBTI configuration. It does this by a series of voice prompts. The CBTI will prompt the user for a user ID and a user password. The CBTI will then offer the user a series of menu items eg press 1 for status information, press 2 for control, press 3 for advanced etc. The user has the choice of a male or female voice. Additional Software Versions will be released to suit different languages and local telco issues. 6.3 Dialling out options The CBTI has the ability to send voice notifications to up to six remote telephones for example mobile telephones. Notifications are set into two groups they are group1 and group 2. The user can program the CBTI to send a notification reporting which lights are on or off or to tell the user when an alarm zone has been triggered. 27 7.6.3 Local Phone Detection Threshold [MV] This value is used by the CBTI to detect when a local phone has been hung up. The value is in millivolt s (mv). The Detection works by monitoring the voltage on the phone line after a local phone pickup has been detected, if the voltage increases by the amount of this parameter the CBTI assumes all local telephone connections have been hung up (offline). This value may need to be changed, depending on the local handsets being used. A range of 500 to 700mV is suggested The modem configuration options are as follows: Country code allows the set up of the country you are in Dial mode allows the user to choose the dial format of the CBTI either a pulse or tone. DTMF timeout can be set from 0 mins to 255 minutes. It is the time between no response from the CBTI to the modem. Threshold (Mv-s / 10), field allows adjustment to the change in the telephone line voltage once the handsets are hung up, it is the change in voltage that the CBTI sees to release the system awaiting its next operation. This figure must be multiplied by 10 to show the actual value in mv. Is the voice gain threshold for when you are on a local phone network Telephone Voice Volume The CBTI uses this setting to determine how loud or soft to play it s message to users dialled in, or users contacted for announcement. C-Bus Project name will allow the user to link to the C-bus project manager database allowing tags associated with that project to become available. (Currently not supported) CBTI project name is the name of the project you are working with. Installer Data allows the user to enter in their details eg. name address etc Installer reference allows the user to give the project a unique reference Local Access Access Code When using a local telephone to access the CBTI the CBTI will be listening into the phone line by giving the CBTI a code for example #3#. Once the code has been selected the CBTI will pick up and then start a session. Copyright 2003 Clipsal Integrated Systems Pty Ltd Page 27

28 Care should be taken that the chosen code does not conflict with commands support by other telephone devices on the line or commands recognised by the telephone exchange. Wait for Access Code Timeout This is the period of time in minutes that the CBTI waits for someone to enter the local access code after a local pickup is detected. If the access code is not detected within this time the CBTI stops looking for an access code. Figure 7 (note Security System Network should read as Library) 7.7 Audio Short Silence [msec] Short Silence [msec] defines the short silence time in milliseconds it can be set from Short silence can be set in the menu configuration for a pause in the announcement of a device or the menu listing. For example the menu configuration could look something like this:- enter <silence> user <silence> I.D. followed by <silence> the hash key <silence> Copyright 2003 Clipsal Integrated Systems Pty Ltd Page 28

29 Long Silence [msec] Similar to the Short silence the long silence is used in the menu con figuration to insert a pause into the menu structure Long Silence [msec] defines the Long silence time in milliseconds it can be set from Library The CBTI can be programmed to have a male or female voice both have Australian accents. Numeric Translate Mode The numeric Translate mode sets the method used to announce numbers. Numeric Translate Mode is used when the CBTI is using a language other than English. The user has a choice of the CBTI reading digits or Value. For example instead of the CBTI saying forty five percent if digits were selected the CBTI would say four five percent.
