Scalable Switching Solutions Enabling Wireless Data Networks TM
Inefficient DCS Growth is the Problem

Legacy DCS Switching Solutions Raise OPERATING COSTS and PLANNING RISKS Carrier 1 SOLUTIONS Raise Network EFFICIENCY and CUSTOMER SATISFACTION Multi-Service Switching The unprecedented growth of wireless services in North America is well documented. Cellular telephones, once considered an extravagance, are widely used today. Monthly usage is at an all-time high and power users are also using their phones for additional Personal Data Assistant (PDA) functionality. Other users are taking advantage of wireless services to maintain constant connections to and the Internet using 3G technologies, and they are eagerly awaiting the adoption of new WiFi and WiMAX standards to enhance broadband wireless connectivity. Our new wireless world will spawn a host of innovative companies that will develop new applications and services that we wouldn t have dreamed of just ten years ago. Unfortunately, this spectacular growth has also exposed a weakness in the current wireless infrastructure. Wireless carriers currently rely on large, multi-rack Digital Cross-connect Systems (DCSs) located within a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) to switch circuits between individual cell sites, the switch and the backbone network. These devices are capable of grooming substantial amounts of traffic, which makes the DCS one of the most critical, but expensive devices in a carrier s network. LEC Central Office DS1 DS1 Mobile Switching Center HSX 6000 Remaining competitive in the dynamic wireless world requires agility and cost-containment. With these requirements in mind, Fujitsu has created the highly-flexible FLASHWAVE Multiservice Switching Platform (), a next-generation transport switching solution that offers the benefits of a 300G DCS without the scalability issues that hinder other solutions.this evolutionary can be justified for a wide variety of switching requirements in MSCs of all sizes, matching capital investment with today s traffic demands and minimizing planning risks. Service providers can start with a single-shelf FLASHWAVE configuration with a 45G or 70G STS switch fabric and 20 interface slots to meet the traffic demands in smaller MSCs. Later, when traffic demand grows, the switch fabric can be added to allow a single shelf to offer 100G service capacity across the 20 interface slots. When additional interface capacity is required, a second and third shelf can be added to expand the system to 40 interfaces/200g capacity and 60 interfaces/300g capacity, with future expansion plans to support up to six shelves and 120 interfaces/600g capacity. Three shelves fit in a single rack and all upgrades are non-service-affecting, making this the easiest multi-shelf architecture upgrade available. Although today s DCS solutions were designed with massive switching requirements in mind, few MSCs require this capacity today, but many will in the future. As a result, wireless carrier network planners must determine where they think the largest service growth will occur and forecast switching requirements far into the future. Wireless carriers accepted the high power, space and cost requirements of stripped-down DCS variants because no other solutions were available. Today, these carriers are discovering that growing their DCSs to handle increasing traffic demands is not as easy or cost-effective as initially promised. Frequent software upgrades and ongoing maintenance issues are costly and labor intensive. Adding extra capacity can be a time-consuming and complex process. The high cost of a DCS has forced most remote Base Station Controller (BSC) sites and many MSCs to simply manage without one. The resulting DS1/DS3 multiplexing equipment and manual cross-connections by patch cords have created a cabling nightmare and added thousands of potential failure points to the network. A typical DCS deployment requires carriers to install a completely new network element and incur a significant capital investment, critical long-range planning expense and the overhead of supporting yet another network element. - Dana Cooperson Group and Program Director, Optical Networking, RHK DS1 Provides Ring Termination and 3/1 Grooming Carrier 2 The Fujitsu FLASHWAVE platform is very threatening to competitors because it has been deployed by many carriers, including several RBOCs. The FLASHWAVE platform has the combination of capacity, optical port density, variety of interface support and Ethernet transport functionality that fits many carrier requirements for metro edge systems. - David Dunphy Principal Analyst, Current Analysis Provides 1/0 Grooming All electrical and optical service interfaces from DS1 to OC-192, including next-generation 10/100Base-T and Gigabit Ethernet, are supported in the flexible interface slots, simplifying sparing and planning. With a host of optical connection options available with the FLASHWAVE, you can finally make the all-optical MSC a cost-effective reality. If cross-connections at the DS1 level are required, optional VT1.5 switch fabric cards allow over 20,000 DS1 circuits to be switched between interfaces. Cross-connections at the DS0 level are also possible with the addition of an HSX 6000 shelf. Optional DS3 transmux cards can pack DS1s from any interface into a DS3, which can be dropped locally as an electrical signal or inserted into any optical facility. Up to 432 DS3 transmux signals can be supported within a three-shelf system, ending the cabling hassles and reliability issues often associated with external M13 multiplexing equipment. Complemented by the NETSMART 500 craft user interface or NETSMART 1500 Element Management System (EMS), the FLASHWAVE platform makes scalable transport switching a simple and cost-effective option for today s dynamic wireless networks. As market leader in the North American SONET market with a 28% share (per our research), Fujitsu has provided carriers with an alternative to the DCS that allows grooming capacity to be added as needed, lowering shortterm capital expense and risk. - Dana Cooperson Group and Program Director, Optical Networking, RHK

Scalable Transport SWITCHING is the SOLUTION
Partner with an Industry Leader Telecommunications carriers around the world have trusted Fujitsu with their critical optical networking requirements for over 20 years.with more than 320,000 network elements deployed, Fujitsu equipment sets the standard for performance, reliability and carrier-grade quality. Our experience in building robust and scalable networks of all sizes for every major wireline carrier in North America puts Fujitsu in a unique position to help wireless carriers create networking solutions that are optimized for a wide variety of situations. Fujitsu is the Leader of the $1.39 Billion SONET Aggregation Equipment Market in North America 28% Source: RHK The FLASHWAVE Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP) not only offers an extremely cost- and space-effective solution for all traditional SONET Add/Drop Multiplexer (ADM) applications, but also supports advanced functionality such as STS and VT1.5 switching, native Ethernet transport, digital video transport, and integrated DS3 Transmux. You can easily expand any FLASHWAVE MSPP within your network to become a Multiservice Switching Platform () that supports ultra highcapacity grooming applications that previously required an expensive Digital Cross-connect System (DCS). Both configurations share a common set of shelves, management units, service interfaces, and cabling to minimize the impact on existing operating systems, procedures and staff. With 20 flexible service interface slots in the MSPP configuration and up to 60 service interface slots in the configuration, the FLASHWAVE platform supports dozens of terminal, linear and ring architectures simultaneously, while integrating DWDM, broadband video, and the Local Area Network (LAN) into the backbone network. In addition, the FLASHWAVE platform eliminates your dependence on old, asynchronous, stand-alone M13 multiplexers and their associated maintenance-intensive, manual patch panel connections, providing significant reductions in operating expenses. From wireline to wireless, telecom to cable, and all points in between, carriers have standardized on the FLASHWAVE platform for their mission-critical transport and switching needs.
