1 DATASHEET WX CENTRAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM Product Overview When it comes to WAN optimization, visibility into the distributed enterprise is absolutely critical to understand how applications are performing, ensure uninterrupted operations, and maintain maximum user productivity. The Juniper Networks WX Central Management System from Juniper Networks dramatically simplifies monitoring and control of the Juniper Networks WXC Series Application Acceleration Platforms, providing IT with unprecedented visibility into WAN and application performance. Aggregated reports detailing application performance across the WAN enable IT to make informed decisions and exercise complete control over the parameters that affect business policies. Product Description The Juniper Networks WX Central Management System (WX CMS) offers a powerful, intuitive solution for centrally managing, monitoring, and configuring Juniper Networks WXC Series Application Acceleration Platforms distributed throughout an enterprise. Running on Microsoft Windows 2000 and 2003 servers, the WX CMS software supports multiple versions of the WXC Series operating system software and can be accessed securely from any compatible browser connection through HTTPS. The WX CMS software provides unprecedented visibility into how applications are performing over the WAN, offering detailed information about traffic patterns, bandwidth consumption, and other performance trends that IT can use to maximize WAN resources. An integrated content distribution feature also enables the WX CMS software to prepopulate distributed WXC Series by proactively pushing large files intended for companywide distribution, eliminating the need for separate enterprise content delivery network (ECDN) solutions. The monitoring software helps IT learn how users and applications are interacting over the WAN, reporting on bandwidth consumption, top talkers, and how quality of service (QoS) policies are impacting overall application throughput. An Event Management Console displays a comprehensive list of WAN and application problems, enabling IT to quickly pinpoint trouble spots, determine whether the WAN is at fault, and drill down to identify and resolve issues. The WX CMS software also provides visibility into each element of the WXC Series Framework, which defines the attributes required to accelerate application performance over the WAN. With WX CMS, IT can manage additional WAN capacity created by Molecular Sequence Reduction (MSR) and Network Sequence caching technologies, see the impact that Packet Flow Acceleration (PFA) and Application Flow Acceleration (AppFlow) technologies have on application performance, allocate bandwidth and prioritize applications through QoS, and direct applications over multiple WAN links with the Policy-based Multipath feature. 1
2 The Event Management Console (top) provides a comprehensive summary of error conditions for rapid troubleshooting and resolution. Trend reports project future growth based on historical performance patterns. Features and Benefits Multi-level Visibility Offering 36 distinct reports, WX CMS provides IT staff with a complete view into what is happening on their WAN links. Support for role-based views enables IT to offer segmented views into WX CMS reports for different types of users. Executive summary reports provide an at-a-glance view of key traffic, performance, and compression statistics. A unique My WAN portal allows IT staff to create customized views into the specific performance metrics of devices and sites they want to focus on including application mix, bandwidth consumption, and application performance to enable rapid problem diagnosis and troubleshooting. In addition, an event management console summarizes all detected error conditions or other significant system or performance events impacting multiple WXC Series, providing increased visibility into WAN and device behavior and enabling proactive problem resolution. Drill-down reports are available by site, device, and link to view details on WAN throughput, path monitoring, top talkers, and other statistics. Application acceleration summary reports bring together all optimization metrics for application traffic between two locations. Trend reports based on WAN throughput, volume by application, WAN latency, WAN loss, and QoS traffic class enable capacity planning and network resource optimization. Global Policies and Monitoring WX CMS allows network managers to centrally manage and modify global configuration settings on all WXC Series deployed within the network. IT can also monitor all WXC Series, with status reports providing at-a-glance summaries of device health, configuration status, and compression and acceleration statistics. Granular User Access Control WX CMS administrators can provide tiered access privileges and granular access control to WX CMS reports and device configuration functions. WX CMS allows devices to be segmented into multiple groups for access control and reporting purposes. Support for customizable user roles enable IT to define what management functions users have access to, which configurations they can view, and which devices they can access. A set of predefined user roles can be applied, or new user roles can be easily created and customized as needed. Predefined role-based views enable the administrator to segment data views on a peruser basis, allowing both a management view and a read-only view of WAN and application performance for users. WX CMS also supports the Microsoft Active Directory Schema for remote authentication and authorization. Leveraging this feature allows IT to ensure that authorizations in Active Directory/LDAP are used to enforce tiered access to WX CMS functionalities. Centralized, Simplified Platform Configuration WX CMS provides a single point for managing up to 2,000 WXC Series. IT can leverage WX CMS to schedule key upgrade and management tasks as well as to perform updates such as rolling out new software revisions to all devices at once. Device configuration publishing gives IT access control over distinct WXC Series configurations by allowing IT to create a device configuration and publish that configuration to a single user group or multiple user groups. Automated Deployment and License Management Using the WX CMS software, IT can automate configuration of remote WXC Series, greatly simplifying the setup of tens or hundreds of distributed platforms. IT can also use WX CMS to automate license management, simplifying large deployment administration. 2

Content Distribution The WX CMS content distribution feature allows IT to selectively pre-populate distributed WXC Series with large files, providing enterprise content delivery network (ECDN)-like capabilities without actually deploying a dedicated ECDN solution. The content distribution feature proactively warns the WXC Series platform dictionaries with data patterns matching large files destined for company-wide distribution, such as Microsoft Office documents, software patches and upgrades, and other memoryintensive files, making them locally available for immediate download by remote and branch-office users. Automated Critical Provisioning, Management and Notification Functions WX CMS enables large pervasive deployments of the WXC Series by automating certain management tasks that can be scheduled for a single WXC Series platform or an entire community or device group. IT staff simply add tasks to a predefined device group and all scheduled tasks will be executed automatically, eliminating the need to manually schedule ongoing tasks such as collecting configuration backups and diagnostics when new WXC Series platforms are added to the network. All 36 reports available through the WX CMS software can be scheduled for delivery through as a PDF, either immediately to a predefined set of users or at a specified time on a recurring basis. IT can also customize the text that will accompany the attached report(s). Similarly, an gateway enables IT to configure WX CMS to automatically and immediately notify users of new events or error conditions for rapid follow-up and resolution. Simplified Multi-Customer Management Using Network Address Translation (NAT), managed service providers (MSPs) can easily manage multiple customers using a single WX CMS platform to contain the costs of providing that service and continue to offer high-margin, high-value services to their customers. NAT support allows service providers to manage WXC Series platforms in a customer s private IP address space while maintaining the WX CMS management platform in their own management network. Even though there may be overlapping IP address spaces in these customer networks, the use of NAT means that each customer network can still be managed as a discrete unit. 3
