What is ZigBee? A high level communication protocol using small, low-power digital radios based on the IEEE standard for wireless networks ZigBee is targeted at RF applications that require a -Low data rate - Long battery life -Secure networking 2
What is ZigBee? Open Standard WWAN IEEE IEEE Radio + Protocol Range WMAN WiMax IEEE Mesh Networking WLAN WPAN ZigBee Bluetooth WiFi a c Data Rate (Mbps) Up to 65,536 network nodes Full Mesh Networking Support Multiple channels in the global 2.4 GHz band and regional sub 1GHz bands 250Kbps data rate Network coordinator ZigBee Router ZigBee End Device Communications flow Virtual links 3
ZigBee Alliance Overview Organized as an independent, neutral, nonprofit corporation in 2002 Open and global Anyone can join and participate Membership is global [approx. 40% Americas, 30% EMEA, 30% Asia] Activities include: Specification creation Certification and compliance programs Branding, market development and user education 4
ZigBee Alliance Promoters plus over 240 member companies from around the world 5
ZigBee Value Proposition Standard protocol developed and supported by over 250 companies (today) around the world Meets key market needs No new wires Easy to install and maintain (mesh, self organizing, self healing) Reliable (mesh, multiple channels, demonstrated interference tolerance) Secure (AES 128) Ability to scale to thousands of nodes Long battery life (years on a AA) Low Cost (open standard) Solutions available from multiple vendors through the value chain Silicon Platforms Modules Tools Products 6

ZigBee Powers the HAN ZigBee provides an open wireless standard for the HAN [Home Area Network] enabling device networks in the home for load control e.g. Heating/AC, Security, Lighting, Appliances. 14
HAN Guiding Principles Secure 2-way communications between the AMI Network and the HAN Load control integration (e.g., distributed resource dispatch / control / relaying) Direct access to usage & other meter data (e.g., kwhr, KW, Voltage, etc.) Platform for future customer owned products which leverage meter data and utility/grid information Three types of communications: public price signaling, consumer specific signaling and control signaling Supports communications to other HAN Devices with metering capability (e.g., gas &/or water meter communication, EV sub-metering, PV sub-metering, etc.) AMI Network interface to HAN interface is based on open standards Implementation is appropriate given the high value and relative low cost Potential technology obsolescence is low due to multiple bridging options ZigBee Supports all of these Principles Source: UtilityAMI OpenHAN Task Force 15
