10G Ethernet on Copper History Channel Category Cable by Supported Technology Cat 1 - Telephone cable, ISDN Cat 3-10BaseT Cat 5-100BaseTX Cat 5e BaseT Cat BaseT, but what about 10 Gigabit??? Should there be a Cat 6 + to support 10 Gigabit???

IEEE 802.3an the standard will be IEEE initiated in November 2002 a Call For Interest (CFI) in regards to running 10G Ethernet over copper wires. In order to create a new standard IEEE have 5 criteria that must be meet. Market potential, which is being demonstrated by the acceptance of Ethernet in the market Compatible to IEEE 802.3, it must be Ethernet in regards to frame sizes, coding etc. Is a new standard needed, which is true as this contains unique features and reaches 10G speed Technically feasible, which is going to be explained later in this presentation Economically feasible, which is going to be explained later in this presentation February 2004 : Project Authorization Request(PAR) with calling of an IEEE802.3an Task Group 10GBASE-T: Time Table

10GBASE-T: Why it s worthy? 10GBASE-T vs. 1000BASE-T If you compare a 1G transceiver with a 10G transceiver you will find that the stating cost would be 8-9 times the cost of a 1G. In 2008, the difference will be only 2-3 times the cost of a 1G. So the cost of transmitting a gigabit data will start at 0,8 times the cost of transmitting the same over 1G interfaces, will be 0.2 times in G vs. 10G Relative Cost Targets Relative Cost (1G '04=1) Time 1G 10G 10GBASE-T: Why it s worthy? 10GBase-T vs. 10GBase Fibre (short reach SR) the price difference would start at 0,6 and have a trend towards 0,15. This proves that 10G over copper is economically feasible. 10G Fibre vs. 10GBASE-T Relative Cost Relative Cost (Fibre '04=1) 1,2 1 0,8 0,6 0,4 0, Time Fibre 10GBT

10GBASE-T: Application 應用 10 GBase Fibre (802.3ae) 10 GBase-T (802.3an) 10GBase-CX4 (802.3ak) Data Center Yes Yes Yes (< 15 m) Horizontal Cabling No Yes Vertical Cabling Yes No 10GBASE-T: Objective from IEEE Keep the Ethernet structure The same frame as IEE802.3 The same topology as original Ethernet Support Duplex Co-existence with 802.3af: doesn t mean that it will run Power over Ethernet (PoE), but simply that it will not get disturbed if PoE runs in transmission channels next to the one beeing used for 10G.

10GBASE-T: Objective The reference to cabling medias are to be taken from an update of ISO/IEC 11801, covering Class E up to 500 MHz and Class F up to 1000 MHz. As the cabling specifications are written today 10G would be supported on: 100 metres of Class F / Category metres of Class E / Category 6 shielded Up to 55 metres of Class E / Category 6 unshielded (this although might be deleted from the standard). Environment Compliant CISPR/FCC Class A Support BER = GBaseT- Technology

10GBase-T: Technology 10G BASE-T: Shannon s Law Shannons law are based on Professor Shannon who in the late 40 developed a teoretical calculation of the maximum transmission capacity within a channel. C = B* log2(1 + ( S )) N C = Information carring Capacity(ICC), B = Bandwidth, S = Signal strength N = Noise strength This expression shows that the ICC is proportional to the bandwidth, but is not identical to it.

10G BASE-T: Shannon s Law To determine the signal to noise ratio we need to define: The level of signal power delivered at the receiver -- Attenuation Noise strength is come from: Return Loss Noise NEXT FEXT Alien Crosstalk Background Noise Alien NEXT Alien Crosstalk occurs between adjecent cables in a bundle between connecting hardware in a patch panel or outlet. ANEXT Category 6 System

Alien NEXT Background Noise WiFi Bluetooth RFID GSM 3G Radio TV

Background Noise UTP requires additional protection in order to reach the required -150 dbm/hz noise level. STP carries its own protection in form of a shield around each transmission channel which reduces background noise up to 90 db, which means that it will work without additional protection. Fibre Optics does not need any additional protection. 10G BASE-T: Shannon s Law The get the Information Carring Capacity by Shannon s Law C = B* log2(1 + ( S IL )) AXT + BN C = Information carring Capacity(ICC), B = Bandwidth, S = Signal strength N = Noise strength IL = Insertion loss AXT = Alien Crosstalk BN = Background Noise

Think about it before make decision Lot of producer announced the Cat.6A UTP solution. Before you buy, please make sure: Is it compliant with IEEE 802.3an (10GBASE-T) for 100m? Is it compliant with the Alien XTalk for IEEE 802.3an (10GBASE-T)? Is it compliant with the TIA 568-B.2-10 & 11? Is it compliant with NWI of ISO 11801? Who has verified the Alien Crosstalk? The most important thing is, is there any test laboratory verify the performance? There is not any Cat.6A UTP system that is verified by 3P Premium Line provide the end to end solution for Cat.6A 10G Shielded and Unshielded There is 10G UTP solution - the most economical solution, but it is also the most uncertain solution. The more important thing is to make sure the performance is fulfill the requirement, not only considering the economical solution. When we consider all of the environment you meet for running 10G Ethernet via twisted copper, the Premium Line Cat.6A Shielded solution is still the best solution.
