7 MPLS Overview IETF RFC 4364 (2547bis) Combined with proposals from Cisco, IBM, and Toshiba circa 1997 MPLS packets can run on other L2 technologies such as ATM, FR, PPP, Ethernet. MPLS allows for the creation of secure, policy-based VPNs over a variety of underlying networks across multiple carriers.

8 MPLS Benefits and Performance Quality of Service (QoS): The overall performance of the network supported by SLAs. SLA terms include: Availability, Packet loss, Latency, and Jitter. Class of Service (CoS): The ability to differentiate and treat packets differently based on importance and time sensitivity Class of Service allows for MPLS users to prioritize different types of data depending on their requirements and applications. Most carriers offer anywhere between 3-6 different levels of CoS. Gold Level: Voice traffic, HPBX Silver+: Streaming Video, Mission critical data, PCCW s High-Definition Video Conference solution Silver: Oracle, SAP, and other business critical applications Bronze: , http, etc.

9 MPLS InterCarrier Interconnects RFC 4364 describes multiple methodologies of connecting autonomous systems. MPLS ICIs (formerly known as NNIs) allow for two carriers to seamlessly expand their network to provide VPNs in locations where they do not manage owned facilities. ICIs allow for regional carriers to offer global services to their customers. Scalable, secure, proven method to expand into a developing region. Relationship-based SLAs, Procedures, Pricing, CoS Mapping, etc. all is negotiated prior to implementation and is updated on continual basis.

11 Putting it Into Practice Multiple Regional Network Providers vs. One Network Provider with Extended Reach Comparable Costs ICIs require minimal infrastructure investments or expensive backhauls. Dealing with one Carrier instead of multiple Carriers allows for IT to cut down on cycles. Ensure that One Network Provider has experience with providing a seamless network solution. Successful ICIs require 2-4 months of negotiations between Carriers before implementation. Implementation Timeframes Request for Proposal: 1-3 months Decision: 1-3 months Implementation: 3-8 months (dependant on the size and locations of VPN)

12 Putting it Into Practice What to look for? SLAs Single SLA across multiple networks pre-negotiated. Performance Round-trip delay (RTD) should be very comparable. Most carriers have performance information via Web portal. Redundancy Review network maps and request specific routes for diversity if required. Coverage Carriers using ICIs for longer periods of time have greater coverage than those going it alone or just implementing their first ICI.
