The Best Defense is a Good Offense Creating Networks That Work (the first time) Lauren Rotman, ESnet Jennifer Schopf, Indiana University April 24, 2017 Internet2 Global Summit 2017
Presentation Overview Problem of Big Data (#obvious) Sample of Current Strategies Future Looking Concepts 2 5/4/17
Big Data Coming from Everywhere 3 5/4/17
VISION Collaborations at every scale, in every domain, will have the information and tools they need to achieve maximum benefit from global networks END-TO-END PERFORMANCE Implement proven sets of services that create an optimal environment for science *BEFORE* problems occur. 4 5/4/17
ESnet Strategies Host regular requirements reviews with domain scientists to: Create more precise forecast of networking needs using quantitative and qualitative feedback, not just for the backbone Create mechanisms for ongoing dialogue with stakeholders Re-imagine Cross Connects Workshops Develop and implement new technical engagement services that provide the glue between researcher and campus WAN connection New Science DMZ services, Superfacility services Pilot efforts into replicable production service Build an army of engagement practitioners around the world. 5 5/4/17
Petascale Data Transfer Node (DTN) Project Collaboration between ESnet, ALCF, NERSC, OLCF, and NCSA Aims to establish a reliable performance baseline of 15Gbps of data transfer performance (equivalent to 1PB/week) between the DTN clusters at the computing facilities Science drivers in Astrophysics and Climate, more to come. Intend to publish as a innovative best practice 6 5/4/17
The APS Science DMZ Pilot perfsonar improvements were profound. Effort to create a friction free network path to a specific APS beamline Participants from ANL Networking, APS Networking, GM/CA beamline and its users 7 ESnet Science Engagement (engage@es.net) - 5/4/17
The APS Science DMZ Pilot 8 5/4/17
Build an army of self-sufficient and diverse engagement practitioners around the world Desired Outcomes: Scale by teaching expertise & requirements gathering to global engagement partners Sharing value and ROI of engagement practices across entire network ecosystem Implementations: Tutorials at well-attended community gatherings Operating Innovative Networks (OIN) program Women in Networking at SC (WINS) Network Resource Startup Center (NSRC) videos Fasterdata knowledgebase Taskforce for Research Engagement Development (TF-RED) 9 5/4/17
Building an army of self sufficient and diverse engagement practitioners around the world INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS At Indiana University
INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS At Indiana University How did DOE do this right? Focused on socio-political strategies as well as technical strategies Full access to who their end users are Dedicated team for more than 5 years Organization made this a priority But no one group can do this alone
INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS At Indiana University Center of Excellence for Engagement and Networks Coordinating body to bring together dispirit efforts to make the right connections Provide support and assistance Help other groups do what DOE has done so successfully Make connections
Engagement can mean many things INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS At Indiana University
INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS At Indiana University Vision for CEEN Provide resources and assistance to help Application scientists Network and campus engineers People training up to be an engagement specialist CIO/Campus planners - ROI Through activities such as: Online resources Workshops/Training opportunities Case studies, examples Contact points and helpers
INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS At Indiana University CEEN cont Promoting effective technologies DMZ, DTN PerfSONAR Data analysis End to end performance Holistic approach
INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS At Indiana University Measurement and Monitoring Performance End Users
INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS At Indiana University This is a pitch! Inclusive not exclusive Partnerships and collaboration are a must This is a problem of scale: Thousands of institutions, hundreds of thousand of researchers This is an issue of making the right connections
