2 Web-enabled Architecture The Metasys system is a proven, high performance building automation and facility management system with comprehensive features for the efficient and effective operation of today s modern buildings, providing comfort and safety to occupants and protection of equipment and services. The Metasys system extended architecture has evolved to bring the benefits of the latest computing and communication technologies into building automation and facility management. At the same time it preserves and enhances existing investments in building control systems and technology in your facilities. Web Browser Access The user interface in the Metasys system extended architecture is simply a Web browser device that draws its data from an automation engine on the network or an application server that is coordinating access to a number of automation devices. Many of the functions of the traditional workstation software now run in the automation engines where the data is collected and stored. Automation engines and application servers are able to serve multiple users or clients to the system, using the technology of the World Wide Web and Internet. IT Standards By using the standard data formats and communication protocols of the Information Technology (IT) world, the Metasys system extended architecture is compatible with the networking infrastructure in most buildings and facilities today. These standards include: Internet Protocol (IP) as the communication protocol between network engines, servers, and Web browsers Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) for network management Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) for network time synchronization Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) for message transfer HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and HyperText Markup Language (HTML) for user interface functions Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Domain Name System (DNS) for device naming and dynamic network addressing The system also uses standard system security and encoding protocols to protect against unauthorized access to data and control systems. For data storage, the application servers support different database options including the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 software package. Open Protocols Besides the protocols of the IT world, the Metasys system uses the open standards of the building control industry. BACnet messaging is supported over the Internet Protocol (IP) Ethernet network, and point data in the automation engine is exposed in BACnet object format. The LonTalk protocol is also supported for a field network of LONWORKS enabled devices. System Integration The Metasys system has always been a means to integrate multiple systems to provide a common user interface. The Metasys system extended architecture is able to integrate existing Metasys N1 networks and N30 networks, and is directly compatible with N2 Bus devices. The use of IT standards enables integration with enterprise systems on the same network. The support of open protocols like BACnet and LonTalk protocols offers ever increasing opportunities to integrate other controllers and systems including lighting, power generation, security and access control, and many more. User Interface Today s operators demand user interfaces that are intuitive and easy to use without special training or look-up manuals. The Metasys user interface within the extended architecture combines the best features of previous building automation systems from Johnson Controls using the well-accepted display techniques of the Internet age. The Metasys system also supports messaging by and paging to remote users and service personnel as well as the Web browser interface. 2 Metasys System Extended Architecture Product Bulletin

3 Source of Information A building automation system is not only a control system but is a source of valuable information for the management of your facility. 6 Multiple Building Automation System Adding more devices to the site network extends the building automation system to monitor more building systems over a wider area. When multiple s are connected to the system, one of the devices is designated as the Site Director. Users log in to the Site Director which provides navigation capabilities to all devices and controllers on the site and monitors the status of the connected devices. In this configuration all data is stored in the flash memory of the devices. Web Browser Printer Multiple System with an ADS An ADS provides a location to permanently store alarm and event messages, audit trails, and historical and configuration data for all devices on the network. The ADS also acts as the Site Director and includes the offline System Configuration Tool (SCT). The ADS provides a scalable server architecture supporting larger numbers of concurrent users. For systems requiring extensive storage of data and very flexible network access to the data, an application server with the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 database package is recommended. The ADS server solution supports the connection of a hard copy printer to automatically record alarm and event messages. The ADS also provides comprehensive firewall protection if user access is required from the public Internet. 8 Multisite Building Automation System The Metasys system extended architecture enables communication between multiple buildings and to remote sites using technologies such as a Virtual Private Network (VPN) and Remote Access Service (RAS) that provide secure communication over Wide Area Networks (WAN), or using Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) over dial-up public telephone networks. Remote sites may be single or multiple configurations, with or without a local ADS server. The remote site may also be a Metasys N1 installation with one or more NIEs to integrate the site into the Metasys system extended architecture. The operations center for the multiple sites would normally have an ADS server connected to the enterprise IP network and be part of the Virtual Private Network for access to the sites that are linked by a Wide Area Network. It would also have modems to receive messages from small sites that only have telephone line access. The application server receives and displays alarm and event messages to the operators and records their response actions. The server also retrieves and stores all operational data from the remote buildings for review by management personnel. Enterprise business systems may also access the data for further analysis. The building where the Operations Center is located may also have its own building automation system with a single or multiple s. Users access the multisite system from a Web browser connected to any part of the network. The Metasys system extended architecture provides comprehensive system security to authenticate users, provide access only to specific areas of the multisite installation, and limit the degree of interaction according to the user s assigned authorization level. 9 Open Systems Connectivity and Integration The Network Automation Engine () not only supervises a field bus of N2 controllers, but also is able to integrate other controllers and devices that use BACnet or LONWORKS communication technology. BACnet devices are connected directly to the IP Ethernet network. The communicates with the devices using the BACnet protocol and presents the BACnet data to the Metasys user interface in the same way as the other data in the. The BACnet devices can be set up with their own configuration tools to read and write data in the or in another BACnet device using standard BACnet protocol messaging. The Johnson Controls N30 supervisory controller may be integrated into the Metasys system extended architecture in this way. Printer The is also available for LONWORKS network connectivity and integration. Any LONWORKS enabled controller from Johnson Controls or LonMark certified device from another manufacturer can be connected to the and integrated into the Metasys system architecture. The LonMark data is available for display on the Metasys user interface, archiving in application servers, or for transmission to other devices on the IP network. The serves as an integration engine for BACnet, LONWORKS enabled, and N2 Bus devices in this configuration, providing a single-seat user interface and enabling data transfer between the devices. 10 System Configuration Integrated Configuration Tool The tools for system configuration are an integral part of the concept and design of the Metasys system extended architecture. Offline configuration, online configuration and system operation all have a similar look-and-feel at the Metasys user interface, using similar basic panel layouts, system navigation methods and detailed information presentation. The integrated configuration tool has all the features required to set up a building automation system: basic system navigation tree for connected networks integration of Metasys N1, LonWorks and BACnet enabled devices customized user navigation trees point naming and setting operating parameters graphic diagram configuration alarm and event message routing graphical logic connector tool for custom programming downloading, uploading, and archiving and NIE databases The tool also supports the running of the configuration tools for controllers on the N2 bus and the downloading of application files through the. Offline Configuration As many projects have to be configured before the installation is complete, the System Configuration Tool (SCT) allows the project design engineer to create a database for the project and simulate automatic sequence of control and custom logic programs before starting up the equipment at the job site. Online Configuration Online configuration is embedded in every and NIE device to enable the creation of the building automation system database online. It also enables the engineer to modify the system database during the start-up and commissioning phase or for service and maintenance purposes. Automatic Discovery The Metasys system extended architecture has the capability to automatically discover field devices on connected buses and networks to accelerate the configuration process in online mode. Automatic discovery is available in the for the N2 bus, and when activated, it will scan the bus and populate the network navigational tree with the devices it discovers. The configuration files for the controllers then can be used to select the inputs and outputs and data values to appear in the navigation tree. The user can edit the items that are not of interest and enter additional items as required for the operation of the building. If LonWorks integration is enabled in the, the LonWorks network may also be scanned for devices with a preloaded application that will be entered into the navigation tree along with the network variables that have been defined in the devices. If BACnet integration is enabled, the can be requested to scan the IP network for BACnet devices and populate the BACnet integration navigation tree with the BACnet devices that respond to the s messages on the network. The standard BACnet objects that reside in these devices are listed under each integrated device. The NIE also has an auto-discovery feature for Metasys N1 networks and will automatically build the navigation tree for a connected Metasys NCM with its configured objects including alarming, trends, and totalization features. The user then can edit the navigation tree online and archive the database in the SCT. Figure 12: SCT Screen with Navigation Tree 10 Metasys System Extended Architecture Product Bulletin
