User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 10 SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION Date / Time Time Zone Time sync via Network Time Protocol (NTP) Here you can change the password of a user. 10
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 11 DATA MANAGEMENT SHARE MANAGEMENT Each share represents physical volume (partition) on that disk. If wished it is also possible to share certain folders within that main share. Please beware that restricting access to subfolder share does not mean that the user cannot access it through the main share. User must be restricted within main share as well. Shares can be resized (made larger) or renamed any time. Shared drives are initialized drives or Raid arrays on which the shares and iscsi Targets can be created. If the drive is not listed check first under Disk Management Disk Info if the drive is listed there. The following information is shown: Full capacity Available space for new shares Created shares with their size 11
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 12 USERS AND GROUPS The euronas server can check the identity of users by using its internal user / password list. This settings are only for accessing the web interface and SMB/CIFS cluster resource. Default setting for new shares: everyone can access the shares. If you wish to limit this - define at least one user under access management. The euronas server has already some predefined user / group accounts. Group membership can be changed for every user. Select option Groups in users list Special characters are not allowed in user names Duplicating Log-in Credentials for euronas and Windows or Macintosh Clients You can simplify user access for Windows or Macintosh clients, by duplicating their log-in credentials on the euronas server. This will help to bypass the log-in procedure when accessing the server. This is only valid for local users - not domain users 12
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 13 NETWORK Here you can see all the information about your network ports. If you click on configure you can configure its TCP/IP settings. Additionally to the local user / group authentication euronas can also authenticate users using Windows Active Directory or Windows NT Domain services. The following methods are supported: Workgroup (local user / group authentication) Windows Domain (Windows NT) Active Directory Domain In order to join the domain you must have an administrator account for this domain. 13
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 14 NETWORK IP address and subnet mask are necessary for the computer to communicate with other computers. If a data packet is to be sent to a computer outside of the local network, than this happens via the gateway which also possesses a unique IP address. The following settings can be configured via network card: ) The following settings can be configured manually: IP address Subnet mask Gateway The network settings are getting provided by the DHCP server. 14
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 15 NETWORK DNS (Domain Name Service) converts an IP address into a computer name. You have to enter the IP address of the server under which the service runs. WINS converts specific Microsoft computer names into an IP address. You have to enter the IP address of the server under which the service runs. If no settings of DNS via DHCP are transmitted to the server or if the TCP/IP was configured manually the DNS and/or WINS server can be entered here. The WINS information cannot be fetched from the DHCP Server. If necessary this information should always be set manually. If there should be problems converting the names and/or if it is not possible to reach a certain computer via its name, the IP address and the name can be entered manually. The following information can be registered: IP address of the computer Host name (long) i.e. computer1.mydomain.local Host name (short) i.e. computer1 (without domain) 15
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 16 16
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 17 NETWORK This option allows you to bundle several network cards in order to increase bandwidth and/or redundancy (reliability). euronas supports the following possibilities: The network bandwidth increases by an equivalent of the factor two since several network cards are sending data in a load balancing way. The network bandwidth increases by the factor two since several network cards are sending and receiving data in a load balancing way (switch support needed). If one network card disconnects then the other network card takes over automatically, and connected users continue to have access to the server without any problems. Ping is a computer network administration utility used to test the reachability of a host on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. If a computer can be reached via its IP address only, then in "Host Editor" you can link the IP address with the name. 17
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 18 DRIVE MANAGEMENT The following information can be seen: Name of the drive Manufacturer and model Capacity in Megabyte Membership in Raid Initialization status S.M.A.R.T. Status Temperature euronas software is compatible with all hard disks supporting ATA, S-SATA, SAS and Fibre Channel. S.M.A.R.T. allows you to access the status information of your hard disk this also helps to prevent hard disk failures. 18
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 19 DRIVE MANAGEMENT In order to create a share on a drive, it needs to be initialized. It is important to note that after initialization any data - already on the drive - will be deleted irrevocably. With the start of the initialization a name will be assigned to the share drive. Now you can create shares for this drive in the share management. The actual status of the share can be also seen in the share management. 1. Select the drive 2. Enter the name of the share disk and decide how much space you wish to reserve for snapshots (if you do not wish to use snapshots enter 0%) 3. Now you can create shares and iscsi targets on the drive. 19
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 20 HARDWARE RAID MANAGER In addition to the software RAID euronas also supports many hardware Raid controllers. Depending on controller model - hardware RAID manager can read the status, create RAID and notify you via in case of drive failure. All supported hardware RAID controllers are recognized automatically, and the RAID manager adjusts features depending of the controller. An updated list of all currently supported controllers can be found on our website under 20
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 21 SOFTWARE RAID RAID connects several hard disks while being addressed like a single disk. The advantages are the speed (RAID 0) and data security since the data is still readable if one hard disk fails (RAID 1, 5 and 6). euronas supports the hardware RAID controller (euronas Premium and HA Cluster) but also includes powerfull integrated software RAID functionality. Hardware RAID controllers (specially RAID 5/6 controller) are expensive. Inexpensive RAID controllers often are only driver based RAID controllers that are not much different than a software RAID, consuming the CPU the same way. Built-in software RAID helps reducing the total costs for the system and still provides more than acceptable performance for many scenarios. RAID-code is based on Linux RAID which is proven in millions of servers running in many critical environments. RAID monitoring service will inform you if one of the drive fails. All RAID related events are logged. Hard disks can be put into another system - another euronas installation will still recognize them and address them correctly even if the disks are not put in the same order as in original system. Software Raid supports the following configurations: RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 10, RAID 5, RAID 6. Software RAID can be expanded with additional drives. 21
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 22 SOFTWARE RAID The Raid array is easy to create: 1. Select the hard disks you wish to use. 2. Enter the name and type of the Raid array. Given name helps you to differentiate disks and raid arrays in your system. 3. When RAID creation is finished you can use the new RAID disk as a normal disk and create shares, iscsi or Fibre Channel targets on the RAID drive. 4. RAID information allows you to see the status of the new RAID. This page automatically refreshes the RAID state every 30 seconds. 22
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 23 SOFTWARE RAID Software RAID supports the following options: speed and capacity no data security if one disk fails all data is lost Data gets shared between several hard disks. This enhances the data in- and output rate. But is also increases the risk of losing all data if one disk fails. This option is only recommended if data is not important and you need maximal performance Data security 50% capacity loss Data gets mirrored on two hard disks both hard disks contain identical data. If one disk fails, data remains intact on the other disk. It is possible to define a dedicated hotspare drive. If one hard disk fails in a RAID 1 array, the spare drive will automatically take over and the RAID array will rebuild automatically. Data security, capacity and speed (reading) Slower at writing Data together with parity information is spread over all hard disks. If one hard disk fails the system can continue work normally and will automatically missing information from failed drive out of the parity information. The advantage is this security and capacity at the costs of a lower write speed, since parity calculation is computing intensive. This RAID still represents the best compromise between cost, redundancy and access speed. reading Most secure option two hard disks can fail, still safe in rebuild mode, and fast Capacity of two hard disks gets lost 23
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 24 SOFTWARE RAID Data gets shared between at least four hard disks, and you obtain a failure security of up to two hard disks. The system continues working even if up to two hard disks fail. Therefore the advantage is high failure security and capacity at the disadvantage of a lower access rate, since sharing is very computing intense. But an additional advantage compared to Raid 5 is that even in rebuild mode the Raid compound is redundant and one more hard disk failure could be met. 24
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 25 SNAPSHOTS Snapshots are backups of data at a certain point in time. A backup is taken of data located on shares. The backup is a complete copy of the secured shares, folders and files on a single share on a drive at a certain point in time. It generally takes a few seconds to take a snapshot. In the case of lost or damaged data, you can refer to the backup in order to restore an earlier version of the data. Under access rights you can see who is eligible to accessing the snapshots. If for example a snapshot is taken daily or once a week you have access to the data of the last 30 days respectively 30 weeks. After having defined the access rights for the snapshots, you can find the snapshots via "Name_of_the_share_snap". Each snapshot is listed as a single register with date and time of registration. Also you have the possibility to revert whole snapshot to the volume by using the button revert (reboot after this is necessary). Snapshots can be timed or executed on demand. If access is permitted, the iscsi snapshots can be reached via the iscsi initiator like any normal target. Snapshots can be set to be taken at an exact time for example on a selected day or hourly. 25
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 26 SNAPSHOTS Before you can use snapshots there must be a reserved snapshot space on that disk. For taking a snapshot, an already existing data gets accessed while reading, and only the changed blocks get copied into the reserved storage space. The more shares get changed the more storage space is needed for the changes. euronas is calculating the needed storage space for each snapshot by dividing the whole reserved storage space by the number of allowed snapshots on the drive. 26
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 27 HYBRID CACHE TIERING Hybrid Storage Cache Tiering improves the performance of your storage server by dynamically moving frequently used data to a faster, smaller device such an SSD. This way you can build a hybrid storage server that will provide you with higher I/O performance and larger capacity at the same time. euronas analyses automatically incoming data transfer and moves blocks that are used more often to the faster (SSD) disks. The longer the server is in use the more efficient your server will become. Please note that data blocks will be moved so SSD disks should also be kept redundant (RAID Array). For setting up a hybrid storage please go to Storage Management / Cache Tiering. From there you can see the list of all drives. 27
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 28 HYBRID CACHE TIERING Choose a drive, which will be the main drive in the hybrid storage, and then select a drive, which will be the cache drive by selecting the drive and clicking on Set cache button. Note that the cache drive shouldn't have any shares or ISCSI/FC targets on it. On the picture below main drive will be sdc and cache drive sdd. Now go to Details for setting further options. 28
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 29 HYBRID CACHE TIERING Now you can decide how much cache space each individual share or target is allowed to use. The Write Back option allows faster speeds but is risky in case of power failure. Per default Write Back is disabled. Stats button will show you current cache usage and detailed information. 29
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 30 APC-UPS UPS helps the server in case of power failure to shut down the system in a controlled way. UPS service controls the UPS battery and automatically shuts down the system when it reaches a critical status. It is important to note that "battery level" and "remaining time" are both valid. The according status that is reached first decides that the system is shut down. After having configured UPS, check the status of the device if you cannot see the status and/or the website is not responding, the UPS service could not recognize the device. 30
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 31 APC-UPS 31
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 32 SERVICES If you have set notification than you will automatically receive an if there should be any problems whole running the device. The following notifications can be set: Raid UPS notification Server synchronization reports The following parameters need to be set: SMTP server Sender: an account which is known to the SMTP server and/or which gets accepted by the SMTP server Receiver: address of the recipient to whom the notification is to be sent User name (SMTP) Password (SMTP) You can monitor the server using 3 rd party SNMP tools Monitoring service for APC UPS devices (USB / Network). 32
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 33 EVENT LOGS Event logs help you troubleshooting in case of problems. Especially when contacting technical support it is very important to create and send support file as well. This file helps us determining the problem and finding the solution much quicker 33
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 34 STATISTICS Under statistics you can see the server usage. You can see the following information: 34
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 35 STATISTICS 35
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 36 CLUSTER ADMINISTRATION euronas HA Cluster software uses advanced technologies that synchronize the Data between 2 servers in real time. Its intelligent services detect if one of the servers goes offline and takes over the services and the network address of the failed server without requiring administrative intervention. Users and Services that use the storage will continue to work normally. Without clustering, if a storage server is down, the data and all related applications and services will be unavailable until the server is back online This benefit is not only for the failures and crashes that inevitably happen in the computer world, but also for planned maintenance. A server in the cluster may be taken offline for maintenance and brought back online without interrupting your users or customers euronas Cluster uses automated tools that helps you configure it in few easy steps. There must be one or more reliable IP Addresses on the Corporate Network that both servers can reach for proper operation of the High-Availability/Custer features An example would be the router which is on the Corporate Network or connects the servers to the Corporate Network For best performance and high availability the server should have 4 individual Network Interface Cards with a minimum bandwidth of 1 Gigabit. They should be configured as two separate bonded networks One of the bonds should be connected to the Corporate Network The other bond should be connected directly to the other server on a private Replication Network If the servers are in the same location they should be cabled directly to each other without any switches between them if possible For top performance the Replication Network should be 10 Gigabit If dual-port cards are used each port on the card should be assigned to a separate bond so that the failure of one card does not break the entire bond Card 1 Port 1 -> bond0 (Corporate Network) Card 1 Port 2 -> bond1 (Replication Network) Card 2 Port 1 -> bond0 (Corporate Network) Card 2 Port 2 -> bond1 (Replication Network) Quad-port cards should be avoided DHCP should not be used unless static leases are provided Using DHCP without static leases will cause the cluster to fail when the IP addresses change 36
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 37 CLUSTER ADMINISTRATION Before cluster is created it is important to configure network settings and to initialize drive / RAID. Make sure that all NICs are configured prior creating cluster (later this IPs should not be changed) - you need at least 2 NICs - one for internal communication (replication network) and one for communication with network clients (corporate network). Click here on "Create New Cluster" Confirm the cluster creation 37
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 38 CLUSTER ADMINISTRATION Select here network cards that you wish to use and provide admin password of the other server. Here you should also set "Network Test-IP" - this IP is used by cluster to find out if it can reach the clients (it will ping them regularly). Ideally it should be more than one and should be systems that are running 24/7 - for example your router, printer, other servers... 38
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 39 CLUSTER ADMINISTRATION Both servers will now build and optimize for cluster. This can take several minutes... After the successful creation you can see the overview and that both servers can see and communicate with each other 39
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 40 CLUSTER ADMINISTRATION Cluster is now ready and you can create a cluster drive. HA Cluster R3 provides you with several different options for cluster drive creation. You can select them depending on your license and requirements. 40
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 41 This drive will be assigned to one of the servers. If both servers are online selected server will be primary server for this drive - in case that primary server goes offline - secondary server will take over. You can also split the capacity and create more than one cluster drive and assign it to the other server - in this case you can balance the server load between both servers and achieve greater performance. With the optional Active/Active license you also make both nodes active at the same time. Both nodes will simultaneously provide iscsi Targets to the clients. Clients will be able to connect from both paths at the same. This way the failover time will be reduced to absolute minimum (time that client needs to switch over to 2 nd path). This mode should not be used for round robin or any port aggregation features on client side. Its main purpose is reducing the failover time. 41
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 42 Both Nodes share the same storage and can access it simultaneously. This can be SAS, FC or iscsi storage. euronas is ALUA/MPIO aware. Active/Active and Active/Standby multipath connections are supported. For shared SAS and Fibre Channel storage please select the option Shared, for shared storage via iscsi please select iscsi-shared When using iscsi-shared, for multipath, you need to enter the IP addresses of all portals (IP,IP2,IP3 etc.). For SAS and Fibre Channel multipath is detected automatically. For FC ALUA is required. 42
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 43 CLUSTER ADMINISTRATION Now you can create resources on this drive. For this select tab option "Shares & iscsi". Following resource types are supported iscsi Target iscsi Target Lun NFS Share NFS / CIFS Share CIFS / SMB Share with WORM and AUDIT support CIFS / SMB Share with AFP and Spotlight support You can define as many resources as you like - resource will be accessible via the IP Address of the cluster drive. When enabling Spotlight it will keep the common database on the first resource created 43
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 44 CLUSTER ADMINISTRATION Resource is now ready for use and you can reach it under its IP Address - list of resources shows you their current state and server that they are currently running on. Also you can edit resources Depending on which IP and for which node the cluster drive resource is configured it will be accessible through this IP Address and will be running on that node. In case that this node fails, resource will automatically move to the functioning node and fail back as soon as the failed node comes online and syncs its drives. 44
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 45 CLUSTER ADMINISTRATION When editing resources you will get more options for tunning your ressource With NFS resource you can set which IP addresses are allowed to connect to this NFS share and also the IP address from which this NFS share will be accessible from Some clients such as KVM are creating sparse files - if your application does it you should enable this setting 45
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 46 CLUSTER ADMINISTRATION iscsi supports different types of access permissions. You can define which IP addresses are allowed to connect to the target (for others this target will not be visible) or define user/password authentication (CHAP authentication). 46
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 47 47
User Guide for euronas Software P a g e 48 CLUSTER ADMINISTRATION This resource also supports local users and group authentication and authentication via Active Directory domain. Spotlight is only supported for AFP protocol and requires that database is saved on one of the resources. If enabled all AFP resources must run on the same node. Since resource can run on 2 different servers it is not recommended to use name resolution for this resource or adding manually the IP Addresses to the DNS server. WORM and FULL Audit functionality works only with CIFS. It can be defined which client operations will be monitored and logged. Sparse file support should be only used if required by the client (for example KVM) since it can influence the performance. 48
