GEOMANAGER WLAN Administration Guide Introduction TVG 850 and ilm 3100-W Series devices can be configured as the access point for a wireless network (WLAN), enabling mobile workers to access the internet by connecting to the wireless network provided in the vehicle. Internet access enables mobile workers to carry out a number of activities without needing to return to the office, for example: Viewing company data Viewing technical manuals and information online Closing work orders and job tickets while at the customer location Remotely accessing customer contact or status information Placing orders in company inventory systems Completing any other company documentation. The WLAN Security Administration feature enables administrators to configure access point security, authentication, and other parameters from within GeoManager. Administrators can view the current access point configuration at any time on the WLAN Security Administration screen. WLAN access point administration relates to two types of data: configuration data and usage data. Configuration data includes all the parameter data required to configure the access point. Usage data includes hourly statistics of traffic through the WLAN interface. The WLAN Security Administration screen contains four links: WLAN Main Page enables you to edit the access point configuration of a single mobile device. WLAN Edit Multiple Devices enables you to assign the same configuration settings to multiple mobile devices. WLAN CSV Upload enables you to upload a CSV file containing the configurations of many mobile devices at once. WLAN Admin Audit Report enables you to generate a report of any configuration changes that have taken place for the selected mobile devices in the reporting period. The WLAN Hourly Usage Report is available from the standard reporting pages, rather than from the WLAN Security Administration screen. The descriptions in this guide assume that you have logged into GeoManager as a user whose role includes all the WLAN security administration capabilities. For more information about these capabilities, see Role-based access on page 39. 1

Configuring the access point for a single device 6 Enter the wireless configuration settings that you require: Field Wireless LAN Description Click Enable to enable the wireless LAN. The WLAN is disabled by default. SSID The Service Set Identifier is the name of the WLAN. All wireless devices on a WLAN must use the same SSID. Change the SSID from the default of ssid to a unique name that identifies the access point, for example, fbloggs. The SSID is case sensitive and can have a maximum length of 32 characters. SSID Broadcast Enable or disable the SSID broadcast, the continuous announcement by a wireless (Wi-Fi) access point that it is running and available. 1 If SSID Broadcast is enabled, then the access point transmits its name so that wireless stations searching for a network connection can discover it. If SSID Broadcast is disabled, then the access point is invisible unless a wireless client already knows the SSID or is using monitoring tools to discover it. Note: The mobile worker will have to know the SSID and security settings to be able to connect to the wireless network. Channel Select a channel from 1 to 11 from the list or select Auto. In automatic mode, the access point automatically selects a usable channel. If the access point will be used in an area where there are many other wireless networks, you can minimize interference by changing the channel to one less used by other networks. 6

GEOMANAGER WLAN Administration Guide Field Wireless Security Description The type of wireless security to be used for the device: None: no security (not recommended). WEP: Wired Equivalent Privacy. An IEEE standard security protocol for wireless networks. WEP has been superseded by WPA. WPA: Wi-Fi Protected Access. A security protocol for wireless networks that superseded WEP. For more information about the WEP and WPA protocols, see the following tables. We recommend that you use WPA passphrase security as a minimum level of security. WPA radius security is more secure but requires an authentication server. WEP settings: Authentication Type WEP Length WEP Method WEP Passphrase WEP Key 1 4 Type of authentication used for the device. Select Open, Shared or Both. Shared key authentication uses a secret key that is shared by the client and the server. Number of bits for the WEP. Select 64-bit or 128-bit. Type of encryption method for WEP. Select passphrase or key. The passphrase avoids the user having to enter complicated keys by hand when adding devices to the WLAN. The passphrase is automatically converted into complicated keys. Ensure that you choose passphrases with the same care as important passwords. 1 If you have selected passphrase as the encryption method, enter an alphanumeric string. If you have selected 64-bit WEP, enter a passphrase of 5 characters. For example, pepz5. If you have selected 128-bit WEP, enter a passphrase of 13 characters. For example, nt123gdhduasd. Use of punctuation marks or symbols is not allowed. If you have selected key as the encryption method, enter a unique hexadecimal key for each WEP key. 1 Hexadecimal digits are the numeric characters 0-9 and the alphabetic characters A-F. If you have selected 64-bit WEP, enter keys of 10 hexadecimal digits. For example, abc. If you have selected 128-bit WEP, enter keys of 26 hexadecimal digits. For example, abc abc

Configuring the access point for a single device Field Selected WEP Key Description The number of the WEP key that devices will use for authentication. 1 WPA settings: WPA Passphrase You can choose to use a passphrase or a RADIUS server for WPA authentication. RADIUS authentication delivers a one-time, unique, WPA encryption key for each session, and avoids the need for a common passphrase. If you have selected WPA Passphrase, enter the phrase that will be used for authentication as a character string of between 8 and 23 characters (inclusive). Any value on the keyboard is allowed, including embedded spaces. Choose passphrases with the same care as important passwords. For example, trz_abdg14567x3c4v6b6$. Note: Panic Buttons require WPA passphrase security. 8

GEOMANAGER WLAN Administration Guide Field WPA Radius Description The RADIUS server is an authentication server that provides automatic key generation and enterprise-wide authentication. If you have selected WPA Radius, enter the details of the RADIUS authentication. Radius EAP Type: Select PEAP or TLS-EAP. EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) is a protocol that acts as a framework and transport for other authentication protocols. PEAP (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol) is a protocol that encapsulates EAP within a Transport Layer Security tunnel. TLS-EAP (Transport Layer Security) is a well-supported authentication protocol. Radius Auth IP: The IP address of the radius authentication server. Radius Auth Port: The port number used by the radius server. Default is Radius Auth Secret: The server half of a shared secret password used to verify a user. Enter a string of 1-23 alphanumeric characters. Radius Acct IP: The IP address of the radius account client. Radius Acct Port: The port number used by the radius account client. Default is Radius Acct Secret: The client half of a shared secret password used to verify a user. Enter a string of 1-23 alphanumeric characters. 1 The system must be using Firmware 5.3 or later for these changes to take effect. Table 2: Wireless Configuration Settings 9
