HEP Grid Activities in China Sun Gongxing Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences CANS Nov. 1-2, 2005, Shen Zhen, China

History of IHEP Computing Center Found in 1974 Computing Platform -DJS-8(320)(1974) - VAX (1984) - HP cluster (1995) - PC farm (1998) Network Technologies - First internet link (1984). - Network security (firewall, IDS, etc) (1987) - First web server (1994). - DataGrid (2003)

Outline High energy physics experiments in China LCG Beijing site state for CMS /Atlas Site automated installation/upgrade Certificate Authority and BES VOMS Site operation and monitoring Grid-based physics analysis environment Big picture of HEP Grid roadmap

Experiments at IHEP Beijing Electron-Positron Collider upgrade (BEPCII). LHC collaboration for CMS and Atlas experiments. Cosmic ray experiment eas (China-Japan) and argo (China-Italy) at Tibet.

Computing Requirements Table 1: LHC Atlas, CMS,BEPCII/BESIII event rate and size ATLA S Rate [Hz] RAW [MB] RECO [MB] AOD [kb] MC [MB/evt] MC % of real CMS BESII I Plus: ARGO cosmic ray experiment

Experiments Data BES: 4960TB ( tape lib. + Disk cache) for raw, rec., MC, MC-rec., DST. Atlas & CMS: 500TB (Disk cache) for Rec., MC, AOD, ESD, tag. Argo: 240TB (Tape + dcache) for raw, MC., rec., ntpl.

Computing requirement Data processing & re-processing and MC. Rec. analysis. - BESIII: 1504 KSI2K. - LHC Atlas & CMS: 1000 ksi2k respectively. - ARGO: 400 KSI2K. Total: 4000 KSI2K (4000Xeon 3.0 CPUs).

Collaboratories 18 domestic plus 4 international institutions for BESIII exp. Global collaboration for cms & atlas/lhc. Several groups from China and Italy for ARGO exp. Distributed geographically collaboration.

HEP computing model in China Adapt LHC Computing Grid-LCG. Be Compatible with US OSG (Open Science Grid). Be both data- and computing- intensive grid. And high performance, huge data storage and transfer/access.

Network Infrastructure 2.5Gbps international link for cms & atlas /LHC transfer between IHEP and IN2P3/Lyon, maybe Fermi lab, ASCC/Taipei or CHEP/Korean? Gbps for BESIII collaboration among domestic universities and institutes. 155Mbps for ARGO experiment physics analysis between China and Italy. HEP is network bandwidth-consuming application.

LHC computing Grid Built on top of globus and VDT(Virtual Data toolkit) by EU DataGrid. Be quiet stable from lcg-2.6.0, and composed of 171 distributed sites over 40 countries. SC3 ( Services Challenge 3) is been conducting, in particular, data transfer and file catalogue service.

LHC Computing environment Total: Total: Sites Sites ~9299 ~9299 CPUs CPUs TByte TByte

Hierarchical Computing Model Tier-0 at CERN Record RAW data (1.25 GB/s ALICE) Distribute second copy to Tier-1s Calibrate and do first-pass reconstruction Tier-1 centres (11 defined) Manage permanent storage RAW, simulated, processed Capacity for reprocessing, bulk analysis Tier-2 centres (>~ 100 identified) Tier-3 Monte Carlo event simulation End-user analysis Facilities at universities and laboratories Access to data and processing in Tier-2s, Tier-1s Outside the scope of the project

Grid Services (EGEE) Storage Element Mass Storage System (MSS) (CASTOR, Enstore, HPSS, dcache, etc.) Storage Resource Manager (SRM) provides a common way to access MSS, independent of implementation File Transfer Services (FTS) provided e.g. by GridFTP or srmcopy Computing Element Interface to local batch system e.g. Globus gatekeeper. Accounting, status query, job monitoring Virtual Organization Management Virtual Organization Management Services (VOMS) Authentication and authorization based on VOMS model. Grid Catalogue Services Mapping of Globally Unique Identifiers (GUID) to local file name Hierarchical namespace, access control Interoperability EGEE and OSG both use the Virtual Data Toolkit (VDT) Different implementations are hidden by common interfaces

CA/VOMS development and operation Built into IHEP Certificate Authority from OpenCA. Be a working CA and able to issue user s cert, host cert. and service certificate over China HEP community. Set up the BES Virtual Organization for home experiment. Has Issued about 20 certificates of users and host/services. Integrated BES VO with LCG Beijing site which forms a full functional site.

Web-based CA User Interface

VOMS for BES experiment

Site automatic installation-quattor Quattor takes care of the configuration, installation and management of fabric nodes A Configuration Database holds the desired state of all fabric elements Node setup (CPU, HD, memory, software RPMs/PKGs, network, system services, location, audit info ) Cluster (name and type, batch system, load balancing info ) Defined in templates arranged in hierarchies common properties set only once Autonomous management agents running on the node for Base installation Service (re-)configuration Software installation and management Quattor was initially developed in the scope of EU DataGrid.
