5 Efficiency as a design requirement Energy Efficiency 5G system design needs to dramatically Cost efficiency improve network energy efficiency Energy Efficiency is one of ITU-R s key capability for 5G! Minimizing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the network infrastructure for the operators, and the cost of terminals Spectrum Efficiency Spectrum is a scarce utility, the industry should strive to improve it! 2016 TM Forum 5

6 5G: virtualization A 5G network architecture with native support for NFV enables fast creation of dedicated network instances optimized for specific customers, service scenarios and/or terminal types (network slices), potentially improving user experience and infrastructure resources Network slices could be created by the operator combining elementary functions available in a catalogue. Composition of functions to create slices can be managed by the operator though the NFV Orchestration Platform Integration of multiple RATs in the network slices, including WiFi Examples of slices: Smartphone: fully-fledged functions distributed across the network Automotive: security, reliability, latency at the edge. Cloud node + open API for vertical applications. Sensors: avoid mobility, basic Control plane functions (e.g. authentication) 2016 TM Forum 6

7 5G Progress in 3GPP 5G RAT features will be phased as it will be not possible to standardize all in time for Rel-15 completion and early deployments Release 15 will aim at a first phase of expected deployments in 2020 Release 16 will target the ITU IMT-2020 submission 5G Requirements study (SMARTER) will be completed by June 2016 (Rel 14), for: Massive IoT Critical Communication (e.g. industry automation, public safety) Enhanced mobile BB (e.g. higher data rates, higher mobility, ) Network Operation (e.g. network slicing, efficient content delivery, ) 2016 TM Forum 7

8 Radio requirements: Architecture Support tight interworking between the new RAT and LTE Different options and flexibility for splitting the RAN architecture shall be allowed RAN architecture shall allow for deployment flexibility (e.g. to enable context aware service delivery, low latency services) RAN architecture shall allow for C-plane/U-plane separation RAN architecture shall allow deployments using Network Function Virtualization RAN architecture shall allow for the operation of Network Slicing The design of the RAN architecture shall allow the deployment of new services rapidly and efficiently RAN-CN interfaces and RAN internal interfaces (both between new RAT logical nodes/functions and between new RAT and LTE logical nodes/functions) shall be open for multi-vendor interoperability 2016 TM Forum 8

9 Feasibility Study on new Radio Access Technology Target a single technical framework addressing all usage scenarios, requirements and deployment scenarios (June 2017) Radio Access Network architecture, interface protocols and procedures Study the feasibility of different options of splitting the architecture into a central unit and a distributed unit, with potential interface in between Study and outline the RAN-CN interface and functional split Study and identify specification impacts of enabling the realization of Network Slicing 2016 TM Forum 9
