Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Makes it Wi-Fi Wi-Fi Alliance Introduction
Wi-Fi Alliance Overview Founded in 1999, non-profit international association of more than 300 member companies ( Thought leader and worldwide certification body for WLAN technology Enable ecosystem collaboration: manufacturers, standard bodies, regulators, operators Wi-Fi CERTIFIED ensures interoperability and better user experience to WLAN technology Full list of member companies at 4
Wi-Fi Alliance Mission Grow the global market for Wi-Fi CERTIFIED products and services across all market segments, platforms, and applications Certify the interoperability of products and services based on IEEE technology Influence and help define the strategic development of technologies, standards, services and applications 5
What Does the Wi-Fi Alliance Mean to the Value Chain? Manufacturers Certified product interoperability Category growth, promotion and market education Industry roadmap for success Channel Partners Easier sale Fewer returns Customer satisfaction Consumers Positive user experience Mix and match products from different manufacturers Economies of scale will drive value 6
Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Makes it Wi-Fi Wi-Fi Market Update
In a few years Wi-Fi has become something people don t want to live without About half a billion Wi-Fi users Over 200,000 Wi-Fi registered hotspots to connect on the go at airports, trains, hotels, parks etc. More than 1,000 official municipal networks using Wi-Fi to connect communities, attract investment, and serve citizens 8
Growing strong: 300M Wi-Fi units shipped in 2007; on the road to a billion units a year 1,800 1,600 1,400 1,200 1, Wi-Fi Chipset Shipments, by Category, in Millions (ABI Research, May 2008) Handsets (Single- and Dual-mode) Consumer Electronics Other PCs and Networking Gear Mobile Internet Devices & PDAs Installed base now exceeds 450 million people worldwide* Near-100% attach rate in notebook computers** 500M Wi-Fi enabled handsets to ship by 2012** Portable consumer electronics and digital home to comprise 24% of total shipments in 2012** * In-Stat ** ABI Research 9
Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Makes it Wi-Fi Certification
Certification Activity Program is voluntary Over 4,500 certified products Strong growth trend Most products carry several certifications for various capabilities Program continues to expand into new segments, products and applications as Wi-Fi adoption grows 11

Wi-Fi Alliance Convergence Initiatives Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Makes it Wi-Fi
VoIP Phenomenon According to Skype: Skype's 309 million registered users have made more than 100 billion minutes worth of free Skype-to-Skype calls VoIP is penetrating both the home and the enterprise Wi-Fi is a VoIP enabler. In supporting VoIP, Wi-Fi Enables wireless connectivity Enables many additional applications and product features beyond VoIP Supports carrier and enterprise service strategies Allows users to do more with fewer devices 17
Wi-Fi is now a must-have in all the coolest handsets and consumer electronics 18
Wi-Fi CERTIFIED handsets deliver security protection and the best user experience 172 handsets have been Wi-Fi CERTIFIED to date Programs test interoperability and security protocols Optional tests to optimize battery life, support multimedia applications Optional Wi-Fi and cellular radio coexistence mapping (with CTIA ) 19
Introducing: Voice Personal Certification The first performance certification from Wi-Fi Alliance, Voice- Personal marks an important evolution in Wi-Fi CERTIFIED testing The test network taxes the network with simulated traffic streams Four simulated voice calls Simulated video and data traffic Voice-Personal performance criteria include: Packet loss of less than 1% with no burst losses Latency of less than 50 milliseconds Maximum jitter of less than 50 milliseconds. 20
As the market for voice-capable Wi-Fi devices grows, our programs will expand Voice Personal certifications are foundational for future programs Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Voice - Enterprise: planned for 2009 This program will add to the Voice Personal performance testing to include enterprise-grade roaming and security WMM Admission Control 2009 help ensure bandwidth availability for QoS sensitive applications 21
Wi-Fi Alliance collaborates to ensure the best user experience with convergence products & services Collaboration to articulate market requirements Address inter-technology issues (e.g. handoff) Develop testing programs (CTIA) 22
Wi-Fi/Mobile Convergence Work Areas: CWG-RF This is our joint program with CTIA Provides standardized performance characterization when Wi-Fi radio coexists with cellular radio 1. Transmit power 2. Receive sensitivity 3. Coexistence (desense) 23
Next-generation Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi CERTIFIED n draft 2.0 This program launched in June 2007 A Wi-Fi signal that blankets the whole home Video and audio streams move from device to device on a high-throughput link Back up large files in a snap First handsets with n expected to enter the market soon 24
325 products are now Wi-Fi CERTIFIED n draft % also support Wi-Fi Protected Setup 38 are enterprise-grade networking products 100% support WMM Quality of Service 25
September 2009: IEEE n Ratification with Wi-Fi Certification Launch Wi-Fi Alliance will certify products conformant to the ratified n standard Will incorporate advanced.11n features (beamforming, for example) Wi-Fi n Handheld Profile will be incorporated into this program applicable to converged devices Also: CE Profile 26
