1 Load Balance Application in Dual-WAN Interface Load Balance Mechanism To which WAN port the traffic will be routed is determined according to the Load Balance mechanism. Below diagram shows how Vigor router decides the WAN interface for each packet. Load Balance Policy Application Load Balance Policy is a method of binding specific traffic (such as https traffic) to a particular WAN for the duration of a session. Some applications (HTTPS, FTP, VoIP, Terminal Services, Mail, etc) are sensitive to public IP address. They will monitor if your IP changes and log you out if your IP is changed. For example you may meet the problem that logging into certain HTTPS sites (e.g. online banking) keep booting you out. We will take some examples to explain how to setup the Load Balance Policy for the application that requires traffic to be sent and received from the same IP source. Here we take Vigor2920 series as the example. 1

2 Case 1: HTTPS traffic passes through WAN1. 1. Log into the Web configurator of Vigor2920 router. Go to WAN >> Load Balance Policy. 2. Click the Index number 1. 2

3 3. Enable this policy. Select TCP as the Protocol. Type the value 443 in the field of Dest Port Start/Dest Port End. Select WAN1 as Binding WAN Interface. Source IP address (Src IP Start/End) and destination IP address (Dest IP Start/End) are left blank which mean any IP address. Then press OK. Case 2: Assuming there is a server on the Internet with IP address It acts as Web server, SMTP server and FTP server. You want all the traffic between this server and internal host to be passed through WAN2 due to its higher speed. 1. Log into the Web configurator of Vigor2920 router. Go to WAN >> Load Balance Policy. 3

4 2. Click the Index number Enable this policy. Select any as the Protocol. Select WAN2 as Binding WAN Interface. Source IP address is left blank which mean any IP address. Input the server s IP address as the destination IP address (Dest IP Start / Dest IP End). Then press OK. 4

5 Case 3: Assuming there are two departments in your company. You want the Sales department to use WAN1 and the R&D department to use WAN2. 1. Log into the Web configurator of Vigor2920 router. Go to WAN >> Load Balance Policy. 2. Click the Index number 1. 5

6 3. Enable this policy. Select any as the Protocol. Select WAN1 as Binding WAN Interface.. Destination IP address (Dest IP Start / Dest IP End) is leaved blank which means any IP address. Input the IP address range (e.g., ~ ) for Sales department as the source IP address (Src IP Start/Src IP End). Then press OK. 4. Click the Index number 2. 6

7 5. Enable this policy. Select any as the Protocol. Select WAN2 as Binding WAN Interface.. Destination IP address (Dest IP Start / Dest IP End) is leaved blank which means any IP address. Input the IP address range (e.g., ~ ) for R&D department as the source IP address (Src IP Start/Src IP End). Then press OK. 6. The web configuration is finished. Mode Selection - According to Line Speed for Setting Load-Balance Assuming you have you 2 links, one is Cable connection with 10Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream (WAN1), the other is ADSL connection with 512kbps downstream and 512kbps upstream (WAN2). The router will choose better throughput for sharing the bandwidth. Refer to the steps below to setup your Vigor router. 1. Connect a Cable line to WAN1 port and a DSL modem to WAN2 port respectively. 7

8 2. Open the Web configurator and go to WAN >> General Setup. 3. Configure Load Balance Mode. Select According to Line Speed. 4. Click the WAN1 link. Enter the practical line speed (e.g., and 1000) in the fields of DownLink and UpLink as the threshold value. Choose Always On for Active Mode. Click OK to save it and exit the page. 8

9 5. Click the WAN2 link. Enter the practical line speed (e.g., 512) in the fields of DownLink and UpLink as the threshold value. Choose Always On for Active Mode. Click OK to save it and exit the page. 6. Go to WAN >> Internet Access. 7. Select Static or Dynamic IP for WAN1 and PPPoE for WAN2 respectively. Then press the Details Page button to display the corresponding configuration page. 8. Configure the proper settings for Cable line and DSL line connection in those pages according to the information offered by ISP. 9
