4 About the LAN Extenders LAN Extenders enable LAN and campus network managers and service providers to use an existing phone-grade wiring plant to extend 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps Ethernet twisted pair interfaces by using Ethernet over VDSL; the 100m distance limitation of twisted pair data cabling is no longer a challenge. Designed with VDSL (Very high-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line) technology, LAN Extenders allow the transmission of data over sub-standard CAT3 and other telephone cabling to achieve substantially longer distances. As a media and protocol converter, LAN Extenders feature the ability to transfer data both symmetrically and asymmetrically. You can also configure bandwidth to ensure users are limited to a specified amount rather than having access to the maximum achievable. LAN Extenders deploy in pairs one at the central office (CO) and another at the customer premises (CPE). Getting to Know the LAN Extenders The LEDs LAN Extenders feature several diagnostic LEDs. The LED functions are as follows: AN Glows amber when Auto-Negotiation is enabled. DPX Glows amber when unit is operating in Full-Duplex. ERRS Glows amber when errors are detected. Sync Glows amber when a link is established on the VDSL Port. 100 Glows amber when Ethernet port is operating at 100 Mbps. LNK Glows amber when a link is established on the Ethernet Port. XMT Blinks amber when port transmits data. RCV Blinks amber when port receives data. Warranty Contact Black Box for warranty information. Federal Communication Commission Radio Frequency Interference Statement This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B computing device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference in which the user will be required to correct the interference at his own expense. 5 Electrostatic Discharge Precautions Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can cause damage. Always observe the following precautions when installing or handling any board assembly. 1) Do not remove unit from its protective packaging until you're ready to install it. 2) Wear an ESD wrist grounding strap before handling any component. If you do not have a wrist strap, maintain grounded contact with the system unit throughout any procedure requiring ESD protection. WARNING! Integrated circuits and fiber optic components are extremely susceptible to electrostatic discharge damage. Do not handle these components directly unless you are a qualified service technician and use tools and techniques that conform to accepted industry practices. 3) Hold boards by the edges only; do not touch the electronic components or gold connectors. 4) After removal, always place the boards on a grounded, static free surface, ESD pad or in a proper ESD bag. Do not slide the board over any surface. Configuring the LAN Extenders Before connecting a LAN Extender to your network, configure a LAN Extender for its hardware-selectable features via DIP switches located at position S1. Refer to the diagram and switch chart below for settings. DC Power Supply Precautions The following precautions should be observed when installing chassis with DC power supplies. 1) Check nameplate ratings to assure there is no overloading of supply circuits that could have an effect on overcurrent protection and supply wiring. 2) When installing 48V DC rated equipment, it must be installed only per the following conditions: A) Connect the equipment to a 48V DC supply source that is electrically isolated form the alternating current source. The 48V DC source is to be connected to a 48V DC SELV source. B) Input wiring to terminal block must be routed and secured in such a manner that it is protected from damage and stress. Do not route wiring past sharp edges or moving parts. C) A readily accessible disconnect device, with a 3mm minimum contact gap, shall be incorporated in the fixed wiring. 3) Grounding: reliable earthing of this equipment must be maintained. Particular attention should be given to supply connections when connecting to power strips, rather than direct connections to the branch circuit. Sets the CO module as a HOST, allowing management of the CPE (remote) module. This switch is N/A for the CPE module; must be OFF. 6 CO as Host for Remote Management of CPE Configuring the CO LAN Extender as a Host allows remote management of the CPE LAN Extender. Configure the CO LAN Extender as a Host by setting the Dip Switch 8 to the ON position. The VDSL ports must be connected and a link established prior to managing the remote unit. The 10/100 Twisted Pair Ethernet Port The twisted pair Ethernet port on the LAN Extenders (hereon referred to as the Ethernet port) auto-negotiates for speed and duplex mode. These also provide the option of manually setting the speed and duplex mode if the connected devices do not have the ability to auto-negotiate, or when Auto- Negotiation is not preferred. Auto-Negotiation The LAN Extenders ship from Black Box with Auto-Negotiation enabled on the Ethernet port. In this mode, the Ethernet port negotiates for speed and duplex (i.e. the LAN Extender autosenses 10 Mbps Full-Duplex, 10 Mbps Half-Duplex, 100 Mbps Full-Duplex or 100 Mbps Half-Duplex with Flow Control). Configure Auto-Negotiation on the LAN Extenders by adjusting the DIP switch. Selective Advertising Selective Advertising, when used in combination with Auto-Negotiation, advertises only the configured speed and duplex mode for the Ethernet port. If Selective Advertising and Auto-Negotiation are both switched ON, the Ethernet port s speed (10 or 100 Mbps) and Duplex mode (FDX or HDX) can be manually configured. Configure the Ethernet port for Selective Advertising by setting Dip Switches 4 and 5 to the ON position, then selecting the speed and duplex. 7 DC Power Supply Wiring Instructions The following diagram shows wiring configurations for 48 VDC power supplies: The chasis is protected against mis-wiring. If mis-wired, the chassis will not function. Before manually setting the duplex mode, disable Auto-Negotiation (Set Dip Switch 1 to OFF.) Configure the Ethernet port for Full-Duplex by setting Dip Switch 6 to the ON position (Default). Configure the Ethernet port for Half-Duplex by setting Dip Switch 6 to the OFF position. Forcing the Speed The LAN Extenders Ethernet port can be manually configured for 10 or 100 Mbps operation. Before manually setting the speed, disable Auto- Negotiation (Set Dip Switch 1 to the OFF position.) Configure the Ethernet port for 10 Mbps operation by setting Dip Switch 5 to the OFF position. Configure the Ethernet port for 100 Mbps operation by setting Dip Switch 5 to the ON position. Flow Control Flow Control is used to throttle the END device to avoid dropping packets during network congestion. Full-Duplex Flow Control will Advertise ONLY in Full-Duplex Mode. Full-Duplex Flow Control functions ONLY if the link partner (end device) also has Flow Control. Half-Duplex Flow Control DOES NOT Advertise. Configure the Ethernet port on the LAN Extenders for Flow Control by setting Dip Switch 3 to the ON position. Link Fault Propagate Link Fault Propagate (LFP) is a troubleshooting feature. When LFP is enabled and the Host CO unit detects that the Remote CPE does not have a copper link, LFP will disable the Host s copper transmitter. Configure CO LAN Extenders for LFP by setting Dip Switch 9 to the ON position. Do not enable LFP on CPE LAN Extenders. 7 4

8 The VDSL Port The data rate of the 10Base-S VDSL port on a LAN Extender (hereon referred to as the VDSL port) depends on the distance in use. This includes bandwidth limiting, via management, of the data rate for various distances. The following graph illustrates the correlation between the distance and the speed. The sum of the Upstream and Downstream data rates is fixed by the distance of the application. For example, if an application requires 1.5 Km, there will be a maximum of 15 Mbps to distribute between the Upstream and Downstream data rates. If Synchronous data rates are desired, configure 7.5 Mbps for Upstream and 7.5 Mbps for Downstream. Otherwise, speed can be distributed in any combination between the Upstream and Downstream rates, making data rates Asynchronous (12.5 Mbps and 2.1; 5 Mbps and 10 Mbps, etc). For example at a 2Km distance, the Upstream and Downstream data rates will each be 10 Mbps.
