2 Application Report SPAA012A - September 2000 Configuring the TI 3000P 6050 ADSL PCI Modem for RFC1483 Operation Yao-Ting Cheng Broadband Access Group ABSTRACT Using an example system configuration, this application report details a procedure to configure a personal computer using the Texas Instruments (TI) 3000P 6050 ADSL PCI modem for RFC1483 operation. The modem utilizes the TMS320C6201 DSP to provide broadband access at up to 8 Mbps with drivers certified by Microsoft WHQL PC99. 1 Introduction The TI 3000P 6050 ADSL PCI modem utilizes the TMS320C6201 DSP as the data-pump engine to provide high-speed broadband access capability up to 8 Mbps.

3 1 Introduction The TI 3000P 6050 ADSL PCI modem utilizes the TMS320C6201 DSP as the data-pump engine to provide high-speed broadband access capability up to 8 Mbps. The modem can be configured to perform in the RFC1483 (multiprotocol over ATM) mode. The Windows driver discussed in this application report has been certified by Microsoft WHQL PC99. Proper procedures should be followed to correctly install, configure, and remove this ADSL modem. What is RFC1483? It is the protocol for carrying connectionless network interconnect traffic [routed and bridged protocol data unit (PDU), such as IEEE 802 family] over an ATM network as described in the following paragraphs. This protocol encapsulates the data (IP/TCP/UDP) before it goes to ATM AAL5. Only the TI 6050 ADSL PCI NIC (as the ATU-R), TI EVM2 ATU-C (as the DSLAM), and an NT4.0 server (as the aggregator), with ATM and RFC1483 installed, to simplify the system are the basis of this application report (see Figure 1). 2 Installation The system components are: Pentium-class 233 MHz (AMD or Intel), or above, personal computer (PC) Microsoft Windows 98, Second Edition TI 6050 ADSL PCI card and NDIS5 Windows driver

4 2 Installation The system components are: Pentium-class 233 MHz (AMD or Intel), or above, personal computer (PC) Microsoft Windows 98, Second Edition TI 6050 ADSL PCI card and NDIS5 Windows driver (Version ) Two telephone cables with RJ11 jacks on both ends Wireline Simulator (e.g., Consultronics XPS-26-M24, DLS-400) optional TI EVM2 ATU-C central site ADSL modem with firmware Rev. 1.00, or above NT4.0 server installed with ATM LAN card and RFC1483 driver To install hardware: 1. Power off the PC. 2. Insert the 6050 ADSL PCI NIC card in an empty PCI slot. 3. Power on the PC. 4. Because the 6050 card is capable of plug and play (PnP), Windows automatically detects the PCI ATM Controller card and prompts you for the drivers (see Figure 2). Click Next. Figure 2. $Specify the location of the drivers, which should be in the directory \NDIS5\LAN\WIN98SE (see Figure 4)$

Locate the ADSL Manager in the directory \tool.ti, which contains the file ti3000pm.exe. This file is the self-extracting executable that includes all provisioning software, help files, and ATM files. Double click on the file name (see Figure 8) to install the TI ADSL Configuration Wizard. Figure 8. 8 11. Double click the TI ADSL Configuration Wizard icon on the desktop. You are prompted to check your ADSL modem, contact your local telephone company, contact your ISP, and consult the ADSL modem documentation before proceeding (see Figure 9). Click Next. Figure 9. Select My ADSL service provider supplied the configuration information to me so that I could configure my ADSL modem manually (see Figure 10), then click Next. Figure 10. 13. Type the name of your ADSL provider or ISP in the Name For Service field (see Figure 11). Select a proper modulation mode. Select RFC1483 in the Protocol field.

In the Connection Type box, check Permanent Virtual Circuit (PVC). Set VPI and VCI to the values that correspond to the setting of the central site. Click Network Configuration. Figure 11. Service-Provider Parameter Settings 14. Specify an IP address that is in the same domain as the central site, and specify the same subnet mask as (see Figure 12). 10 15. The ADSL Manager prompts you to review the final configuration (see Figure 13). Click Finish to complete the setup. The configuration wizard asks for the system root. 18. After system reboot, a small icon appears on the right bottom corner of the tool bar. Double click this icon and the TI ADSL Manager appears on the desktop (see Figure 15).

12 3 Uninstalling The following procedure uninstalls the ADSL Manager software. 1. Go to the tool bar Start > Programs > TI ADSL > TI ADSL Manager Uninstall prompt (see Figure 17). Figure 17.
