Introduction Ethernet Banking on Structured Cabling Technology Drivers Classification of Cables Fibre-optic cable Cables in building Cabling Infrastructure

Cabling systems address the networking requirements based on data and voice cabling approaches. Different electrical properties for different cables Resistance- Resistance affects the transmission of DC Impedance- Loss of energy from AC current is impedance Noise- Unwanted low strength signal that affects the original signal Attenuation-Decrease in signal amplitude. All the above factors affect rate of attenuation in a cable Cross Talk- When signal from one cable leaked to another by an electrical field Ethernet # refer chap 3 10 gigabit Ethernet- Extension of IEEE standard 10 times faster than gigabit Ethernet. But it retains Ethernet frame format and the minimum and maximum frame size Ethernet architecture including media access control protocol

Banking on Structured Cabling Cabling infrastructure is carefully designed network of cables installed to provide high-speed communication paths which have been designed to be reliable with minimal mean-time-to-repair Structured cabling as a solution Structured cabling is the first step towards achieving optimum performance from the network. A SCS (structured cabling system) can be described as a system that comprises a set of transmission products.

It offers uniformity, flexibility, scalability, easy, Banking on Structured Cabling low-cost changes and investment protection. Advantages of SC 1. Consistency- Same cabling systems for data, voice, video 2. Support for multi-vendor equipment- Standard based cable system will support application and hardware 3. Simplify moves/adds/changes- Supports changes within the system 4. Simplify troubleshooting- Easier to fix 5. Support for future applications

Classification of cables Components of cable 1. One or more conductors to provide a medium for a signal 2. Insulation of some sort around the conductors to keep interference out 3. Outer Sheath- Encase cable elements Twisted-pair Cable- It is lightweight, easy to install, inexpensive and supports many different types of networks. Each pair is twisted with different pair of twists per inch to help eliminate interference from adjacent pairs and other electrical devices. Wires are twisted to reduce the effect of electromagnetic and electrostatic induction. Unshielded Twisted pair UTP is one of the media types. It can be classified into categories depending on the performance. Category 1- Voice-grade telephone cable. It is not suitable for datagrade transmissions. Category 2- Voice-grade UTP, capable of transmission rates of up to 4 Mbps. Category 3- Data-grade UTP, used for data transmission rate of up to 10 Mbps. Ethernet 10BASE-T network requires at least this category cable

Category 4- Data-grade UTP, supports transmission rate of up to 16 Mbps. An IBM Token Ring network transmitting at 16 Mbps requires this type of cable. Category 5- Data-grade UTP capable of transmitting rate of upto 155 Mbps. Enhanced Category 5 (Cat5e)- It supports frequencies 100 MHz. Used for Gigabit Ethernet. Category 6- It supports frequencies of upto 250 MHz. It is also best available standard for Gigabit Ethernet. It has double BW than Cat5e and improved signal to noise ratio. Augmented Cat6- This standard attempts Cat6 to make it suitable for 10 gigabit Ethernet. Category 7- It operates at frequencies up to 600 MHz and its beyond reach of UTP.

Shielded Twisted Pair- 568-Avstandard for STP is known as STP-A and has system rating through 300 MHz. It provides improved protection against external EMI and also protects against crosstalk between each pair and allows cable to operate at high frequencies. STP-A structured cabling can run 16 Mbps token ring signal and a 550 MHz broadband video signal at the same time. It consists of reflective barrier which prevents RF interference from coupling with differential mode signals on twisted pairs and prevents energy from broadcasting out of the cable. Advantages of Twisted Pair cable Easy to connect devices to twisted-pair cable. STP helps in blocking interference UTP is quite in inexpensive UTP is very easy to install Shielded cables are more future proof than UTP

Fibre-Optic Cable A fibre-optic cable offers near infinite bandwidth and perfect immunity to noise. Single pair of fibres can handle the same amount of voice traffic as 1400 pairs of copper. Light signals not affected by interference from EMI or electrical crosstalk. Light signals do not interfere with other signals. Optical fibres have a much wider, flat bandwidth than coaxial cables and equalization of signals not required. Low attenuation, hence signals can be transmitted further than coaxial or twisted-pair cable before amplification is necessary. It is much thinner and lighter than copper cable It has greater data security than copper cables.

Types of Fibre Single-mode Fibre- Step index fiber with a small core almost unlimited bandwidth (1310 nm nm) due to small core supporting only one light mode. It is used for longer distances. It offers highest performance and used for high speed applications. It has narrow spectral width. Multimode Fibre- Core and cladding material are different but uniform refractive index. Supports high bandwidth ( micron)at high speed. Very short runs but at a lower cost. Multipaths can cause signal distortion resulting in unclear and incomplete data transmission. Step-index Fibre Fibres with an abrupt change in refractive index is called step-index fibre Graded-index Fibre- A cable with gradual change in refraction index is called graded-index cable.

Cables in buildings Horizontal cabling- It includes all the cabling between the telecom outlet (TO) in the work area and the cable connection in the telecommunication room (TR). Backbone Cabling- It provides connection between the telecom room and where the cable first comes into the building and between interconnected buildings.

Pathways- Space allocated for routing the cables. It includes all the structures that keep the cabling safe by supporting and protecting it and must also allow easy and clear access to the cables. Glides- The glide vertical managers attach to each side of the 42U rack ensuring that the front of the rack is left available for the patch panels and other patching equipment. The patented rib cages are designed to accommodate patch cords at the front of the rack and terminated solid cables at the rear of the rack 42U rack Patch panel Glide

Connectors- Connectors are used to make flexible interconnection between cables and optical devices. Types of two most common Twisted pair cables: 1. RJ11- Used in US telephones with four or six contact points 2. RJ45 Consists of 8 contact points, generally used in heavy-duty computing environments. The fibre is mounted in a ferrule with a central hole that produces butt joint with the fibre ends as close together as possible. Two most common connectors are SC and ST 1. SC connector- This is built with a cylindrical ceramic ferrule which is attached with a coupling receptacle. The connector has square cross section for high packing density on equipment and has pushpull latching mechanism. 2. ST connector- The connector is similar to SC connector difference is only that it has round cross section and is secured by twisting to engage it in the spring-loaded bayonet coupling

Wiring Patterns- T568A and T568B are two colour codes used for wiring eight-position RJ45 modular plugs. The difference between these wiring patterns is that assignments for pair 2 and 3 are reversed. Wall plates- Wall plates include one or more jack. A jack is the connector outlet in the wall plate that allows a workstation to make a physical or electrical connection to the network cabling system.

Testing and Certification LAN validation is the final task associated with network installation or upgrade project. It consists of testing, measuring and assessing those network installation aspects that are critical for acceptable LAN operation. Need of cable testing Cable testing provides a level of assurance. Cable verification testers can quickly measure basic characteristics including length and faults.
