1 Avaya Solution & Interoperability Test Lab Application Notes for RAD Communications Vmux with Avaya Communication Manager using an E1 interface - Issue 1.0 Abstract These Application Notes describe a solution for integrating the RAD Data Communications Vmux with Avaya Communication Manager and Avaya DEFINITY Generic 3r(G3r) through an E1 interface. RAD s Vmux is TDMoIP gateway that enables the TDM E1/T1 circuits to be extended over an IP/Ethernet network. RAD s Vmux product line deploys TDMoIP technology to extend voice and signaling protocols transparently over packet networks. An Avaya P333R Stackable Switch and C363T Converged Stackable Switch were interconnected to each end of the Vmux device to provide the IP packet network. Information in these Application Notes has been obtained through compliance testing and additional technical discussions. Testing was conducted via the DeveloperConnection Program at the Avaya Solution and Interoperability Test Lab. 1 of 25

2 1. Introduction These Application Notes describe a solution for integrating the RAD Data Communications Vmux devices with Avaya Communication Manager and Avaya DEFINITY G3r through an E1 interface. RAD s Vmux is TDMoIP gateway that enables the TDM E1 circuits to be extended over an IP/Ethernet network. RAD s Vmux product line deploys TDMoIP technology to extend voice and signaling protocols transparently over packet networks. An Avaya P333R Stackable Switch and C363T Converged Stackable Switch were interconnected to each end of the Vmux device to provide the IP packet network. For additional information on RAD Data Communications, please refer to RAD Vmux documentation [3]. Figure 1 illustrates the network configuration used to verify the RAD Data Communications solution. An E1 interface was used between the Vmux and Avaya Communication Manager / Avaya DEFINITY G3r. The configuration details provided in these Application Notes focus on the PBX interfaces between Avaya Communication Manager / Avaya DEFINITY G3r and the Vmux devices. During the test, two types of Vmux products (Vmux 2100 and Vmux 110) were used. Equipment and Software Validated The following equipment and software were used for the sample configuration provided: Equipment Software Avaya S8700 Media Server with Avaya G650 Media Communication Manager Gateway with TN464G DS1 Board (R013x ) Avaya DEFINITY Generic 3r (G3r) with TN464F R011r DS1 Board Avaya C363 T Converged Stackable Switch Avaya P333R Stackable Switch Avaya 4620IP Telephone Avaya Digital Phones Avaya Analog Phones RAD Vmux 2100 Hardware: RAD Vmux 110 Hardware: Generic Fax Machine 3. Configuring Avaya Communication Manager Connectivity between Avaya Communication Manager and the Vmux was done with E1 Trunks. The following sections show the relevant configuration screens for the E1 interface. The DS1 board comes with 24 channels T1 or 32 channels E1 mode. The default is set to T1 mode. To modify to use it as an E1 mode, a toggle switch in the DS1 board must be switched to the 32 channels side. When configuring the DS1 board for the E1 operation, the DS1 MSP and Station and Trunk MSP fields should be enabled in the system-parameters customer-options form as shown below. From the Avaya Communication Manager System Access Terminal (SAT) interface, use the change system-parameters customer-options command. For the purpose of showing the final configuration, the display command was used through out the document, instead of add or change command. display system-parameters customer-options Page 3 of 10 OPTIONAL FEATURES Abbreviated Dialing Enhanced List? n Audible Message Waiting? n Access Security Gateway (ASG)? n Authorization Codes? n Analog Trunk Incoming Call ID? n Backup Cluster Automatic Takeover? n A/D Grp/Sys List Dialing Start at 01? n CAS Branch? n Answer Supervision by Call Classifier? n CAS Main? n ARS? y Change COR by FAC? n ARS/AAR Partitioning? y Computer Telephony Adjunct Links? n ARS/AAR Dialing without FAC? y Cvg Of Calls Redirected Off-net? n ASAI Link Core Capabilities? n DCS (Basic)? n ASAI Link Plus Capabilities? n DCS Call Coverage? n Async. Feature functionality testing verified the ability of the RAD Data Vmux to communicate with Avaya Communication Manager and Avaya DEFINITY G3r, to make and receive calls, transfer calls, and conference calls. Connectivity functionality testing verified that the Vmux devices were able to connect to Avaya Communication Manager and Avaya DEFINITY G3r over E1 using ISDN PRI, QSIG, and CAS. The RAD Data Vmux utilizes the local clock that is provided from the PBX General Test Approach All test cases were performed manually. For each E1 configuration the direct connection between Avaya Communication Manager and Avaya DEFINITY G3r was tested first. Once calls can be made between two sites, Vmux devices were introduced to verify the operation. The following features and functionality were verified: E1 connectivity with ISDN-PRI E1 connectivity with QSIG E1 connectivity with CAS Transfers and Conference calls FAX with various bandwidths Super Tandem feature: When voice data travels through several Vmux-2100 gateways, the intermediate Vmux-2100 units sense that the voice data has already been compressed, and do not uncompress and recompress the data as it moves through the phone network. This ensures that voice data is only compressed once (at the originating Vmux-2100 gateway) and decompressed once (at the terminating Vmux-2100 gateway), resulting in high quality voice, since no losses are incurred from intermediate uncompress/compress cycles. 23 Vmux 110 in place of Vmux Test Results All test cases passed. The RAD Data Communications System provided connectivity to Avaya Communication Manager and Avaya DEFINITY G3r over E1. During the test, no problems were encountered. 7. Verification Steps To verify that the solution was properly configured, the following steps can be taken. After the Vmux devices were connected, make sure that the physical connection (Layer 2) is good by executing test board 1AXX, where 1 is the cabinet ID, A is the carrier ID and XX is the slot number of the DS1 board. If the connection is OK, check the trunk status by running status trunk YY where YY is the trunk-group number. Place calls between Site A and Site B to verify proper connectivity. The fax machines were utilized in Site A and Site B for a proper operation (Tested with 4.8Kbps, 9.6Kbps and 14.4Kbps). 8. Support For technical support on the RAD Data Communications products, call RAD Data Communications Support at (800) or send to techsup@radusa.com. 9. Conclusion These Application Notes describe the configuration steps required for integrating the RAD Data Communications System with Avaya Communication Manager and Avaya DEFINITY G3r. The systems interoperated successfully, providing a suitable solution for TDMoIP in the PBX-to- PBX environment. 10.
