Wi-Fi Technology; Where are we and what to expect (?) Dr. Srikanth Subramanian, CKO, Nanocell Networks Wi-Fi Rates and Speeds IEEE Standard (1997) b (1999) a (1999) g (2003) n (2009) ac (2013E) 80 MHz (160 MHz optional) ad/ay 1.8 GHz ax Max. channel bandwidth 22 MHz 22 MHz 20 MHz 20 MHz 40 MHz Technology Max. PHY layer Data rate FHSS/ DSSS DSSS (CCK) OFDM OFDM 11 Mbps 54 Mbps 54 Mbps MIMO + OFDM Backward compatibility is always kept in perspective 2 Mbps 600 Mbps MIMO (SU/MU) + OFDM Beam forming +SC/OFDM Upto 7 Gbps Up to 7 Gbps OFDMA+MU- MIMO Upto 10 Gbps Spectrum 2.4 GHz 2.4 GHz 2.4 GHz 2.4 GHz 2.4 GHz 5 GHz 5 GHz 5 GHz 5 GHz 60 GHz

MU-MIMO in 11ac - Summary Sounding; NDPA, NDP MU-MIMO only on DL and in 5 GHz only Can support upto 4 users on DL but 4x4 preferably upto 3, 3x3 upto 2, 2x2 -none Access Point wave 2 Along with a capable AP u need atleast 2 active MU- MIMO capable clients to get benefits Client 1 Client 2 Client n Works only with high SNR clients and has no impact on range/cover age 11ac MU-MIMO ACK and Feedback processes are inefficient Can 11ac MU-MIMO Solve the HD problems? Expensive sounding process; polled feedback, large sizes Client measurements, heavy duty processing to be done quickly, potential for errors in feedback No UL mechanisms to support sending of and TCP ACKs efficiently MU-MIMO (802.11ac) 11ac MU-MIMO not a great fit for short-packet HD use cases High processing load to separate user transmissions by AP; works only in certain conditions, good SNR, no mobility etc.

Key concept in ax STA6 A-MPDU to AP AP A-MPDU to STA4 STA4 A-MPDU to AP AP A-MPDU to STA1 AP A-MPDU to STA2 STA1 A-MPDU to AP STA2 A-MPDU to AP AP A-MPDU to STA3 STA5 A-MPDU to AP STA3 A-MPDU to AP DL Multiuser Frame Exchange; OFDMA or MU- MIMO or a combo UL Multiuser Frame Exchange Efficient parallel transmissions of short packets SIFS 11ax Technology Summary Better IOT Support Motivation high density of STAs, large number of BSS in a given area OFDMA, MU Techniques, Spatial Reuse Efficiency Improvements, coverage, outdoor deployments Better OFDM, larger CP, Support for XR Preamble 11ax Technology Enhance Wi-Fi and withstand competition from LTE-U/LAA/MuLTEFIRE Miscellaneous 1024 QAM, 2.4 and 5 GHz support, PS features,..

Wi-Fi Competition?; LTE and Unlicensed Spectrum Control signaling Mobility User data EPC Unlicensed Spectrum- 5GHz Primary Cell LTE-U/LAA MuLTEFire; standalone LTE based unlicensed technology Aggregation of Licensed + Unlicensed LWA/LWIP also in the picture 7 LTE Unlicensed Deployment plan across the globe Enough operators, network vendors, chipset players for handsets seem to have announced solutions for LTE unlicensed approaches Source: GSA

Wi-Fi Features IOT Handling STA 1 Security STA 2 RRM, Band steering, etc. STA 3 QoS Location and related applications Mobility Wi-Fi systems using Mesh/WDS/.. Why do we need multiple home?. Better Wi-Fi Signal everywhere in a large home especially 5 GHz signal seems to lead to a better user experience.. Running wires/using powerline etc. have been tried and have not been successful IOT, Wi-Fi Calling and so on have made this compelling especially given that 2 and 3-radio solutions are becoming quite common Enterprise features coming to home Wi-Fi products!!

Managing Clients Motivation for MBO and OCE Info. Sharing with AP2 How to use 2.4 and 5 GHz bands more effectively? Do not allow such associations Associated to AP1 (Sticky client) WFA Proposing multiband optimization (MBO) and optimized connectivity experience (OCE) Closer to AP2 De-authenticate when client moves far away. How to inform clients about neighbourhood for better roaming/selection etc.? MBO Do we need new IEEE Standards? v wireless network management to help steer users r for fast roaming once you steer an associated user to a new BSS u for preassociation related exchanges using ANQP k radio measurements for exchanging info. about other APs and their signal strengths Wi-Fi Agile Multiband Some WFA IEs to help manage the features w management frame protection to secure exchanges

OCE: Short Connection Times Auth.Frame Higher layer packet containment IE added to assoc. frames Auth.Response FILS AUTH FILS AUTH EAP- RP used to reduce delays; FILS key generated during initial authentication with AAA Assoc.Request Assoc.Response Request for IP address can be piggybacked DHCP Messages AP can send IP address Avoids delays due to security and IP address assignment 60 GHz Wi-Fi 60 GHz ad..will 11ay become a hit (?) ; current Implementations are for backhaul.. Device 1 Challenging RF overcome by beamforming Cable replacement technology for high bandwidth aplications; VR (?) Device 2 5G mm wave move could help overall technology Potential future band (?) due to large bandwidth availability

AP Evolution Story Typically 1 antenna, 2.4 GHz radio, multiple Ethernet ports, b/g days, no RRM/mobility.. Multiple antennas, multiple radios (2.4 and 5 GHz, dual band concurrent radios), multiple Ethernet ports, integrated cable/dsl/.. For retail markets Lots of antennas, 3 radio support, sensing/traffic generator plus normal AP functionality, application layer monitoring features..rrm/mobility/mesh..iot..60 GHz (?).. Location.. Future of Wi-Fi (?) MBO for smoother band steering and transitions..load balancing.. association control IEEE ax for HD and IOT..use of multi- BSS Beacons..and TF-R and TWT OCE for faster connection times..avoid unnecessary probing etc. What all are needed to make Wi-Fi great Help manage multi-ap products.. Mesh..Channel assignments..backhaul etc. No low rate beacons and probe frames w management frame protection to secure exchanges WPA3?
