The BlueSPACE Project approach 2 A complementary solution to the 5G C-RAN (functional split) under investigation in the BlueSPACE project to reduce the bandwidth requirements is to use analog radio over fibre (ARoF) transceivers: The radio waveforms are directly modulated onto light for connecting BBUs and RRHs. It can be used in combination with digital RoF solutions for the 5G NGFI Additionally, the BlueSPACE project also considers to include spatial division multiplexing (SDM) for further increasing the network capacity in the fronthaul: It can be deployed with bundles of single mode fibers or multicore optical fiber. SDM can also be used to power the cell sites using Power of Fiber (PoF) devices. The BlueSPACE network architecture also deploys edge computing in the central office for NFV and MEC applications (e.g. video analytics, data caching).

BlueSPACE s NFV MANO extended functionalites The BlueSPACE project proposes to extend the ETSI NFV MANO architecture with the following features that are not currently supported: SDN control of SDM/WDM/Packet network : provisioning of spatial/spectral connections and discovery of resources and network topology in SDM/WDM-enabled fronthaul network and Backhaul/NGFI packet-based network. Management of PNFs: management of PNFs (mainly physical RRUs and BBUs) together with VNFs, as part of NFV network services for mobile communications. Integration with MEC: provisioning and management of MEC Applications in NFV network services, exploiting the computing/storage resources of edge nodes co-located with the Central Office. Multi-tenancy support (Network Slicing) : multi-tenancy and network slicing are adopted to to optimize the usage of the physical infrastructure through virtualization and resource sharing techniques, while guaranteeing high levels of flexibility in the provisioning of dedicated services with customized QoS. Joint resource allocation algorithms: development of algorithms for NFV network service and network slices that performs joints allocation of network, cloud, VNF/MEC and PNF resources. Integration of PoF: Provisioning and Management of PoF devices and spatial channels, as well as the configuration and monitoring of the devices connected to the PoF system (e.g., Batteries, etc). 5

BlueSPACE s SDN control requirements To develop a transport SDN solution to control the SDM/WDM-enabled fronthaul network and packet-based network segments: A single SDN controller comprising the multiple and diverse technologies of the SDM/WDM-based fronthaul and packet-based backhaul is not realistic. Traditionally, network operators fragment their networks into multiple administrative domains for scalability, and security purposes To integrate the developed Transport SDN control solution with the NFV MANO framework to provide NFV network services: Current NFV MANO framework considers the network as a commodity that provides packet pipes with QoS. It can be dynamically provisioned between the specified end-points. Currently, the interface with the Transport SDN defined by the ETSI NFV MANO framework is still lacking of maturity. 8
BlueSPACE Transport SDN controller We rely on a hierarchical Transport SDN control approach with different levels of hierarchy (parent/child architecture): Several SDN controllers (child WIMs) for the fronthaul, backhaul and NGFI-I segments. Another SDN controller on top (parent WIM) acting as the Xhaul transport network controller. The child WIM for the packet network segment is based on a regular SDN controller using OpenFlow or P4 runtime protocols as SBI to configure the packet switches. On the fronthaul segment side, the proposed solution is to deploy SDN agents at the cell sites and the CO. The SDN agent s purpose is to map high-level operations coming from the child SDN controller into low-level, hardware-dependent operations. The child WIMs NETCONF as SBI with the SDN agents and ONF TAPI with the parent WIM. 9

BlueSPACE NFV service platform The BlueSPACE NFV service platform extends the traditional NFVO and VNFM concepts in order to support the: Integrated provisioning and management of MEC Applications in NFV network services, exploiting the computing/storage resources of edge nodes co-located with the Central Office. Integrated management of PNFs (mainly physical RRUs and BBUs) as part of NFV network services for mobile communications. Joint allocation of computing and networking resources, with embedded configuration of the multi-layer and multi-technology transport network as part of the resource orchestration procedures. The implementation of these three features has a transversal impact in all the considered components, from the NFVO down to the VIM and it requires the introduction of additional functional entities. 12
Orchestration of MEC Applications The BlueSPACE NFV service platform and VIM need to support the following enhanced features: At the NFVO level: service orchestration of MEC Apps lifecycle, including the discovery of existing MEC services and the registration of deployed MEC Apps in specific Mobile Edge Hosts. management of an extended NFV-NS catalogue (NFV-NS descriptor with embedded MEC Apps - NFV/MEC-NS, as well as and MEC Apps descriptors - AppD. resource orchestration algorithms able to handle MEC-related constraints. NFVI database extended with MEC-related information, e.g. positioning of Mobile Edge Hosts and availability of MEC services extension of the NFV-NS instantiation procedures to integrate the configuration of traffic rules for the traffic steering among MEC Apps. At the VIM level: support of programmable APIs for the configuration of network routing between MEC Apps at the Mobile Edge Host and advertisement of additional characteristics and capabilities 13
Management of PNFs The BlueSPACE NFV service platform and VIM need to support the following enhanced features: The NFVO should include a dedicated catalogue and record for PNFDs and PNF instances. The current PNFD should be extended to describe specific constraints. The reference point between NFVO and VIM should be extended in order to advertise the PNFs deployed in the NFVI. The NFVO Service Orchestration function should be able to distinguish between VNFs and PNFs, NFVO Resource Orchestration function, the resource allocation algorithms should be able to support PNF-related constraints. A new component, called PNF Manager (PNFM), should be introduced in the BlueSPACE architecture. This component should provide functionalities similar to the VNFM, but applicable to PNFs instead of VNFs. A new component, called PNF, should be introduced in the BlueSPACE architecture as a driver to interact with specific PNFs. 14

Conclusions The BlueSPACE project proposes Spatial Division Multiplexing (SDM) as the key technology to overcome the capacity crunch that the conventional optical single-mode fibers (SMFs) are facing to accommodate the increasing bandwidth demands forecasted for 5G mobile communications in the fronthaul network. The combination of SDM with flexi-grid DWDM enables to exploit both dimensions (spectral and spatial resources) in combination with analog and digital Radio over Fiber (RoF) techniques. Additionally, BlueSPACE also considers the deployment of edge computing for MEC applications and VNFs. This paper has presented the challenges and architectural solutions proposed to enhance the ETSI NFV MANO framework in order to meet the functionalities considered in BlueSPACE. 19
