4 1. INTRODUCTION The In-Band Management Chassis is the most versatile and cost effective solution for multiple network media conversion. With a wide selection of slide-in converter modules, the In-Band Management Chassis allows users to upgrade and integrate their existing copper network to a fiber network. 1.1 In-Band Management Chassis The 19-Inch rack mountable chassis is capable of serving up to 16 slide-in converter modules. The system and each slide-in converter status can be monitored through the built-in management module via SNMP. The In-Band Management Chassis supports power redundancy by using a second power supply. 6 1.2 Management Module The Management Module is located on the front-left of the In-Band Management Chassis. The customer may use SNMP to monitor the system and installed slidein module status. The In-Band Management Chassis can be monitored locally through the DB-9 console port or remotely through the RJ-45 10/100Base-T LAN port on the Management Module. NOTE: Please refer to the In-Band Management Chassis Network Management Manual for detailed management functions. 6

7 1.3 Redundant Power Supply (Optional) An optional redundant power supply can be ordered for non-stop running. This is important when the In-Band Management Chassis is used in critical applications. NOTE: Please refer to Section 2.6 for Redundant Power Supply installation. Environmental conditions. - One power outlet for the In-Band Management Chassis internal power supply - One power outlet for a Redundant Power Supply (if ordered) - Proper ventilation - UTP cables should not run in the same duct as the power and phone line cables Required fiber conversion slide-in modules Required Fiber and UTP cables Redundant Power Supply (optional) Rack mounting tools 2.2 Unpacking the In-Band Management Chassis The following items should be checked after opening the shipping package. 1. 10 2.3 Install Slide-In Modules CAUTION To prevent any Slide-In Module damage or failure, please wear a grounding device and observe electrostatic discharge precautions before installing into the In-Band Management Chassis. Procedure 1. Plan the slide-in module slot position - All slots are identical - Slide-in module can be installed into any slot 2. Remove the protective plate from selected installation slot 3. Insert slide-in module carefully into the selected slot - Make sure that the slide-in module is firmly connected with the back plane connector. 4. Screw in modules. 5. 11 22.4 Install the In-Band Management Chassis CAUTION Due to overheat concerns, make sure the In-Band Management Chassis is located in a well ventilated area. Standard 19-Inch Rack Installation WARNING Please mount the In-Band Management Chassis firmly in rack otherwise the In-Band Management Chassis may fall and cause system damage and possibly injure personnel. Procedure 1. Plan the In-Band Management Chassis rack position 2. Attach the mounting bracket into the In-Band Management Chassis 3. Align the In-Band Management Chassis with mounting brackets into the selected mounting rail position 4. Fix the In-Band Management Chassis with mounting brackets into the selected mounting rails position carefully and firmly. Desk Top Installation 1. Plan the In-Band Management Chassis desk top position 2. Place the In-Band Management Chassis in a well ventilated, flat, and firm desk. 2.5 Connect slide-in modules to network Please refer to the User s Guide that comes with the slide-in modules for cabling specifications and direction. 11

12 2.6 Connect Redundant Power Supply (Optional) WARNING Do NOT turn on power switch before connecting to the In-Band Management Chassis. Inappropriate operation may cause system damage or possibly injure personnel. Front View Rear View NOTE 1. Redundant Power Supply is hot swappable 2. Please refer to the User s Guide that comes with the FCM Redundant Power Supply for cabling specifications and detailed connection procedures 2.7 Power On the In-Band Management Chassis Procedure 1. Check the power outlet 2. Connect the power cord to the power outlet 3. Turn on the In-Band Management Chassis 4. Verify the In-Band Management Chassis status - Power A is on - FAN is Spinning 12

13 3. OPERATION The In-Band Management Chassis is easy to operate; no special training is required. However, the customer may perform local or remote status monitoring through, 1. LED status 2. 14 4. MAINTENANCE The In-Band Management Chassis is easy to maintain. We suggest the following procedures when problems occur, 4.1 Fault Identification - Local check - Remote check 4.2 Hardware Replacement Procedures - Replace slide-in module - Replace Redundant Power Supply 4.3 Firmware Upgrade 4.1 Fault Identification Fault identification can help customers quickly locate the problem and take proper actions to solve the problem. Local Check Check all the In-Band Management Chassis LED status and cable connections. Check system setup and configuration through console. Whole System Not Functioning 1. Check Power LED status 2. Check Power connection 3. Reset the In-Band Management Chassis power Certain Network Link Not Functioning 1. Locate related slide-in module 2. Check slide-in module s connection with back plane 3. Check slide-in module s Power LED status 4. Check slide-in module s Link LED status 5. Check UTP connection between the slide-in module and related devices 6. Check Fiber connection between the slide-in module and related devices 7. Reset slide-in module Local Console Not Functioning 1. Check COM LED status 2. Check console connection 3. Check console configuration 4. Reset the In-Band Management Chassis power 14

15 Remote Management Not Functioning 1. Check LAN LED status 2. Check 10/100Base-T connection 3. Check network configuration 4. Check SNMP manager configuration 5. Reset the In-Band Management Chassis power Remote Check The customer may remotely check the In-Band Management Chassis through SNMP. For detailed procedures please check the In-Band Management Chassis Network Management Manual. 4.2 Hardware Replacement Procedures WARNING The In-Band Management Chassis contains no user-serviceable parts. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, open and attempt to repair it yourself. Failure to observe this warning could result in serious injury or death from electrical shock. Failure to observe the above warning will immediately VOID any Warranty. Replace FCM Slide-In Module Procedure 1. Remove the existing FCM slide-in module 2. Insert new FCM slide-in module carefully into the slot - Make sure that the FCM slide-in module is firmly connected with the middle plane connector. 3. Fix the fastening screw. Replace FCM Redundant Power Supply For detailed procedures please check the FCM Redundant Power Supply user s guide. 4.3 Firmware Upgrade For detailed procedures please check the In-Band Management Chassis Network Management Manual. 15
