SUMMARY 1 LAN202 module Connections via Ethernet Configuration Saving and protection of the configuration Virtual COM Connection via virtual COM Indications on the LEDs Connections a Glossary Read this document carefully for correct use of the LAN202 option. The manufacturer shall not be held responsible for any damages caused by use, even correct, of its products. The data and characteristics of the product may be modified without prior notice 2

1. LAN202 module The LAN202 module consists of an RS232 serial interface plus an Ethernet 10/100 Base T interface which makes it possible to manage ELPRO devices via an Ethernet network (LAN or Internet). Externally, this module features a 9-pin male DB connector for the RS232 serial interface and a RJ45 connector for the Ethernet interface. The RJ45 connector has 4 LEDs that indicate the status of the network connection. The module cannot be used on its own: it is managed by and communicates with the processor of the machine on which it is installed. The Ethernet interface of the LAN202 module is described below. For the RS232 serial interface, refer to the characteristics described in chapter 5. Connections In this document, the Ethernet interface of the LAN202 module will be called simply LAN202. Interface towards microprocessor Ethernet RS232 For correct functioning of the LAN202 module, and therefore of the machine on which the module is installed, it is necessary to configure its network parameters. To do this, use the DST (Device Server Toolkit) software package that can be downloaded from the download section of our site The description provided below refers to the configuration of the LAN202 module regardless of the ELPRO machine used. This configuration refers exclusively to the network connection parameters of the ELPRO machine and not to its functioning mode. 3

1.1 Connections via Ethernet The types of connection that can be made with the LAN202 module on the Ethernet network are indicated below. The ELPRO devices indicated (TZ16) are merely for example purposes. Local Area Network Local TZ16: must have an IP address consistent with the local network Router / Hub Local Area Network Router / Hub Internet Local TZ16: must have an IP address consistent with the local network System dedicated to management of the TZ16 in Internet. TZ16 connected via Internet: must have a fixed IP address System dedicated to management of the local TZ16. At the moment, no authentication protocol is envisaged (user id, password, or other) for management of the ELPRO appliances; therefore, the Internet connection must be used with care because, in this way, anyone who knows the fixed IP address can access the device connected! 4

2. Configuration For configuration, a PC with Windows operating system (98, Me, NTsp4, 2000, XP, 2003 server) is required connected on the LAN Ethernet network or with Ethernet network board. After downloading and installing the DST package on the PC, connect the LAN202 module (i.e. the ELPRO machine on which it is fitted) to the PC or to the LAN (see chapter 5. Connections): if connected directly to the PC, a crossed CAT5 cable must be used if connected to the LAN via hub, a straight CAT5 cable is used For the LAN connection, the PC used for configuration and the LAN202 module must belong to the same network branch as the configuration SW does not permit identification of devices connected on other branches, i.e. with router or bridge inserted between these (this restriction refers only to the configuration SW). Also, if firewalls are used, these must be configured so as to permit connections in UDP port which allow the configuration SW to see the modules connected via broadcast messages. If the Windows Firewall is used, set the Run a DLL as an App option in the exceptions of the firewall. To configure the network parameters of the LAN202 module, the DS Manager program of the DST package installed is used (reference is made to the DST 3.66 version below). DS Manager makes it possible to discover, configure and display the status of the modules connected in the network. The LAN202 modules connected in the network that have been detected are listed in the initial screen page: Note: The modules connected can be displayed setting as Access Mode: Local Device Server (auto-discovery by broadcast) and then clicking on the Refresh button After display of the modules connected, select the module to be configured and click on the Settings button. 5

The settings screen page consists of several folders (the description refers to firmware version 3.54 or later of the LAN202 module): Network: defines the network parameters. Connection: defines module connection mode Serial port and Outbound packet: define the method of communication between the LAN202 module and the processor of the ELPRO machine on which the module is installed. The parameters of these folders must not be modified as this could cause malfunctioning of communication via Ethernet. The meaning of the individual configuration parameters is illustrated below. Network parameters: Owner name and Device name: parameters useful for more simple identification of the LAN202 module connected or to define the DNS ( if used) MAC address: univocal physical address of the LAN202 module. DO NOT modify this field DHCP: is enabled when the DHCP server of the network is to be used for automatic configuration of the IP address, the Gateway IP-address and the Subnet Mask. The main drawback in using a dynamic address is that the host which communicates with the LAN202 module does not know this address. IP-address and Port: IP address and Port number of the LAN202 module. This address must be consistent with the addresses of the LAN on which the module is connected. Registration at ddns Server: use of the Domain Name System network server is required. In this way, it is possible to refer to the device via DNS instead of via the IP address. The name is taken from the Device name + Owner name fields (in the example it would be: LAN202.elpro). If this option is enabled, the subsequent ddns server IP-address and ddns server Port fields referring to the DNS network server must be defined. Auto-registration on Link Server: This function, which uses the Link Server service (Tibbo), is not normally used PPPoE mode: permits enabling of this type of protocol, normally used for ADSL modems, which permits a PPP connection (Point to Point Protocol used with dial-up modems) on Ethernet networks. At the moment it is not used by ELPRO machines. (This protocol can be used if the LAN202 module is connected directly to an ADSL modem and the ELPRO machine on which it is installed accesses the Internet independently) Gateway IP-address: IP address of the access gateway to the Internet (or to a higher network level). To be specified when the LAN202 is accessed from Internet (or from a different subnetwork) Subnet mask: address mask of the subnetwork for packet routing (if intended for the same subnetwork or to other branches) 6

Connection parameters: Connection time-out (min): defines the duration of the connection, without exchange of data, between the LAN202 module and the host that manages it; setting this time-out prevents a host maintaining control indefinitely without any data exchange. Transport protocol: defines the type of TCP or UDP protocol. Use of the TCP protocol. With this protocol, the communication session is established with a single host and remains active until it is closed by this host. Any other connection requests are not accepted. The TCP protocol is safer than the UDP as it includes mechanisms that guarantee sending of data packets and management of errors. Use of the UDP protocol. Attention must be paid when using the protocol as communication may be established with several hosts and there are no data packet recovery mechanisms (as provided by the TCP protocol). Broadcast UDP data: if the UDP/IP protocol is used, enables management of broadcast messages Link Service login: This function, which uses the Link Server service (Tibbo), is not normally used Inband commands: permits sending of configuration commands during a TCP session. Leave disabled Data login: enables use of the login procedure when interfacing the LAN202 module (in the Windows environment) via virtual com using the VSP program (see chapter 3. Virtual COM) Routing mode: defines connection mode for data exchange Server mode (slave): connection requests from any IP address of the network (or from a specific IP address if configured in the Accept connection from parameter) are accepted. This is the mode normally used for management of ELPRO machines Client Mode: no inbound connection request is accepted. The LAN202 module can make connections only towards the Destination IP-address:port configured Server/Client mode (master): inbound connections are accepted (as for Server mode) and outbound connections can be generated as for Client mode Accept connection from: specifies the address from which inbound connections are to be accepted (from any IP address or from the Destination IP-address:port configured) Connection mode: is significant in Client modes and defines how to start a connection: in this case, mode 1: On data OR command MUST be selected Destination IP-address and Destination port: defines the IP address from which to accept inbound connections (Server mode) or towards which connection requests are to be made (Client modes) Notification destination: parameter non used. MUST be: 0-Last port. 7

The parameters of the Serial port and Outbound packets folders must not be modified. These parameters are factory set and used for communication of the LAN202 module with the processor of the machine on which this module is installed. However, the value of the various parameters normally used for ELPRO machines is indicated. 2.1 Saving and protection of the configuration When several modules are to be configured (referring to several ELPRO machines), their parameters can be saved on the PC used for configuration and recalled subsequently (Save and Load keys). Also, to prevent anyone who has DST software modifying the configuration of the LAN202 modules connected in network, it is possible to specify a password that will be used in the configuration phase (during login with the modules) for sending and transmission of the parameters configured (Password key) Warning: If you forget the password, it is no longer possible to modify or access the configuration of the LAN202 module concerned! 8

3. Virtual COM In the Windows environment it is possible, for those applications that do not interface the IP protocols directly, to manage the ELPRO machines on which the LAN202 module is installed through creation of virtual serial ports. Creation of a virtual serial port consists in associating a COM port other than those existing physically on the PC to an IP address of the Ethernet/Internet network. This capability is implemented by the VSP Manager program of the DST package. To define a virtual COM, start the VSP Manager program and select the Add key from the initial screen page of the VSP: The Properties screen page is displayed: here, the COM that will be used by the management program and all the network parameters necessary for management of the LAN202 module must be indicated. These parameters must be consistent which what has been configured on the LAN202 module. In the example, the COM5 virtual com is created: the application will interface COM5 as if effectively installed on the PC; in actual fact, the VSP will route the data packets to and from the LAN202 module configured (in this case with IP address :1001). 9

The parameters relating to the Networking section refer to VSP functioning mode: Transport protocol: must be the same protocol configured on the LAN202 module Routing mode: defines the connection mode for data exchange of the VSP with the LAN202 module Connection mode: defines when the VSP must initiate the connection with the IP address configured On-the-fly commands: defines the method of sending configuration commands to the LAN202 module. Leave disabled Connection timeout: defines the duration of the communication session without data exchange between the application that interfaces the virtual com and the LAN202 module Listening port: makes it possible to define the port of the IP address that the VSP uses for the communication session with the LAN202 module in network Indicate the following in the Destination section: IP-address and Port: IP address and port of the LAN202 module to be managed. Enable MAC->IP mapping: makes it possible to specify the MAC address of the LAN202 module instead of its IP address. This makes it possible to establish the communication session even when the IP address varies, as in the case of use of the DHCP server The parameters relating to the Outbound packets and Control lines and Default serial settings folders refer to the method of interfacing the virtual serial line by the application that uses the VSP. Generally, the default parameters set function for most applications. 3.1 Connection via virtual COM Via a virtual COM, it is possible to manage ELPRO machines connected both on the local network and via Internet Local Area Network Router / Hub Internet virtual COM5 manages TZ16 of the local network: the IP address of the local network must be associated to this COM virtual COM6 manages the TZ16 on Internet: The fixed IP address of the TZ16 on Internet must be associated to this COM Local TZ16: must have an IP address of the local network TZ16 connected via Internet: must have a fixed IP address In this example, the PC system manages two TZ16 units, one connected in local network and one connected via Internet, using two virtual COM. 10

4. Indications on the LEDs The RJ45 connector integrates 4 leds that indicate communication status and the status of the Ethernet link. 2 Status LEDs (one red and one green) for readout of communication status 1 100BaseT LED (yellow) switches on when the LAN202 module is connected to a link at 100 Mbit/sec. This led is off if the link is at 10 Mbit/sec 1 Link/Data LED (green). This led lights up when the cable is inserted in the connector and usually remains on. It switches off briefly on reception of a packet from the network. At restart, the two status leds flash at the same time and then switch off, subsequently showing the following conditions: Green and red LEDs off: no active connection Green LED flashing: opening of a connection Green LED ON: connection established Red LED flashing: error condition Red LED always ON: overrun condition 11

5. Connections Ethernet 10/100BaseT port connector: RJ45 8-pin female Pin Signal 1 Tx+ 2 Tx- 3 Rx+ 4 non connected 5 non connected 6 Rx- 7 non connected 8 non connected Ethernet connections Connection between LAN202 and HUB (straight cable) Connection between LAN202 and PC (twisted cable) Side A Side B Side A Side B RS232 serial port connector: DB 9-pin male Pin Signal 1 non connected 2 Rx data 3 Tx data 4 connected to pin 6 5 GND 6 connected to pin 4 7 non connected 8 non connected 9 non connected The communication characteristics of the serial line, such as Tx/Rx speed, data bits, stop bits, etc., depend on the ELPRO machine on which the LAN202 module is installed. 12

a. Glossary 10/100BaseT: transmission standard (IEEE 802.3) characterized by a transmission speed of 10/100 Mbits/sec in baseband. T indicates the standard of the physical medium used: UTP cable (Unshielded Twisted Pair ). Bridge: network device that operates at Data Link level (Level 2 ISO/OSI), dedicated to distributing the packets between different segments of a network. CAT5: category 5, referring to the cable normally used to wire LANs Client: program or device that accesses network services or which requests services from another device or program connected in network (server). DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol): protocol that is used for dynamic assignment of IP addresses to devices connected in a network. DNS (Domain Name System): service that permits conversion of URL network names into IP addresses. Gateway: a service, normally provided by a router, that makes it possible to forward packets to outside a local network (or subnet). Is identified by an IP address. Normally permits connection of a LAN to Internet. Hub: simple network device network that routes the packets received from one of its ports towards all the others. Can be considered similar to a repeater. IP (Internet Protocol): protocol for packet switching networks, level 3 (network) of the ISO/OSI model The IPv4 version (address expressed on 32 bits) is used at the moment IP address: 32-bit univocal address, inside a network, that identifies the devices connected in order to permit communication between these. MAC address (Media Access Control address): is the physical network address. It consists of a 48-bit numeric code divided into 6 groups (bytes). This address assures univocal identification of each device produced to the world that will be connected in network. This address includes the identifier of the manufacturer and that of the device and is assigned by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers). Port: 16-bit numeric code that identifies a particular connection (or service) amongst those active on a network device. The codes of the port are catalogued by the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) so that a particular service is always recognized by the port assigned (port 110 identifies the POP3 service, 80 identifies HTTP, ) Proxy: is a program inserted between a client and server that permits monitoring operations, guaranteeing privacy, optimization of accesses towards a server, etc. by several clients. Generally, the client connects to the proxy and then the proxy connects towards the server and routes requests and replies from one to the other. Router: complex network device that routes packets between different networks. Packets are routed considering the IP addresses (level 3 ISO/OSI). Network routers communicate with each other using suitable protocols in order to guarantee update of the internal tables used to route the packets to the devices connected. Server: program or device that performs a specific service and accepts requests from other programs or devices connected in a network (client). Subnet mask: is used by the device that must communicate with another IP address in order to establish whether the addressee belongs to its own sub-network or whether it must route the packets towards the gateway of its local network. The logical AND between the IP address of the addressee and the subnet mask is calculated. TCP (Transmission Control Protocol): protocol corresponding to level 4 (transport) of the ISO/OSI model. This protocol manages reformation of the packets and management of retransmission in the case of error UDP (User Datagram Protocol): protocol corresponding to level 4 (transport) of the ISO/OSI model. This is an efficient protocol but (unlike the TCP) it does not manage sorting of the packets or retransmission of these. URL (Uniform Resource Locator): is the univocal address of a network resource: a file, web page, etc. 13
