Innovation for network businesses by the world's first SDN WAN technologies - O 3 project - May 22, 2014 Atsushi Iwata a-iwata@ah.jp.nec.com O 3 project NEC, NTT, NTT Communications, Fujitsu, Hitachi 0
Agenda Background and mission Motivation(User's and operator's viewpoint) The goal of O 3 project: User-oriented SDN What we did in O 3 project Developed proof of concept system The demonstration 1
Background and mission 2
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) SDN is a technology to innovate new services and to accelerate businesses. Network will be designed, deployed and operated by business application and orchestration system. SDN architecture SDN+NFV applied to wide area network Source: ONF white paper 3
Motivation (User's and operator's viewpoint) 4
Current status of commercial SDN technology Commercial SDN technologies are mainly applied to closed domain networks, such as enterprise, datacenter, and NFV networks. Enterprise Data center Mobile core DC Network DC Network Virtual Network DC Network DC Network Secure virtual network infrastructure Global multiple distributed DCs Load-based flexible resource allocation 5
Current issues of WANs (operator's viewpoint) Current business environment Change of service cycle: short life cycle Change of usage model : global optimization and collaboration Issues of existing WANs Time-consuming process to deploy, operate, terminate network services, due to negotiations between networks and/or layers. Difficulty of resource optimization for each service, since service resource in each layer are independently managed. Difficult to interoperate or migrate over multiple networks and/or layers between different services. Difficult to integrate operation and management due to the vendor-specific/-defined networking. 6
Solution using SDN (operator's viewpoint) For short life cycle Provides rapid deployment, operation and termination of services For global optimization Optimize WAN service by multi-layer resource orchestration For free of vendor -specific/-defined networking Service-oriented rapid and flexible network deployment Enable SDN to provide wide-area multi-layer technologies and resource abstraction technologies 7
Current issues of WANs (user's viewpoint) Application Programming Interface (API) Usually lead to network-oriented API instead of user-oriented API, and is not sufficiently enough for application developers to develop network service programs. Application Programming Interface (API) Orchestration system Northbound API Southbound API Network-oriented API is not SDN controller (Network enough control for operating application system) developers to utilize. Physical links and nodes 8
Solution using SDN (user's viewpoint) User-driven network innovation User community develops new innovative software Agile cross-industry collaboration Chaining different services builds collaborative services quickly Realize user-defined networking Users innovates new services quickly and flexibly Enable SDN to provide user-friendly development framework without detailed network knowledge (via tools) 9
Goal of SDN WAN Distributing SDN software library enables agile end-to-end service deployments and operations to satisfy service SLA/QoS. Distributing SDN software library among different businesses Distributing SDN software library to different regional networks for global cloud services Service Service Provider Entertainment Service Provider All reuse Apps Provider Service Copy Innovation Service Distribute Wide Area Network Customize Sports Service SDN Software Library Partial reuse Reuse Collaboration Environment Medical Services 8KHD BC Application By provider, vender and 3 rd party DC DC Regional 地域ネットワーク Network Regional 地域ネットワーク Network DC SDN Healthcare services Regional 地域ネットワーク Network ソフトウェア Software DC Regional 地域ネットワーク Network DC Regional 地域ネットワーク Network To start new service by only installation of SDN Software Contribution From Global Innovators DC Regional 地域ネットワーク Network 8KHD BC Application DC Regional 地域ネットワーク Network DC 地域ネットワーク Regional Network DC Regional 地域ネットワーク Network By provider, vender and 3 rd party DC Regional 地域ネットワーク Network OOO Platform By provider, vender and 3 rd party 8KHD BC Application DC 地域ネットワーク Regional Network DC 地域ネットワーク Regional Network 10

Requirements of user-oriented SDN Provides orchestration systems for different user requirements I'd like to change AP performance dynamically. Management for AP provider (ex. Skype, Lync, Facebook) Management for service provider (ex. IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) I'd like to automate service management including IT systems. Management for carrier network (ex. Design, Deploy, Operate) Northband API (Innovation for users) Open network platform Southband API (Innovation among vendors) Packet Optical Mobile Physical network I'd like to control and operate network in fine-grained manner. Flexible network platform for various requests from users. 14
Object-defined network platform of O 3 project Object-defined network platform realizes Fine-grained customized network control for carriers, and simple operation for AP providers and service providers.
