About Pathport VIA s Pathport VIA is a 10 port +1 Gigabit Ethernet Switch, designed specifically for DMX-over-Ethernet entertainment lighting systems. The VIA is intended for signal routing use between Pathport DMX-over-Ethernet nodes, or similar equipment, and Ethernet-aware lighting control products, such as consoles and controllers. The VIA, like all Pathports, is a routing device and is not a source of the control protocols or the data being passed. It only provides management and control over the data path. Upgrades implementing further Layer 2 and Layer 3 management features will be released on the website from time to time. The VIA is easily upgraded using Pathport Manager software, a free download. Installation Instructions The Pathport VIA is intended for desktop use, or for mounting in a standard 19 equipment rack, using the rack ears included. Truss-mount adaptors (#9002) and wall-mount kits (#9003) are also available. The Pathport VIA is intended for installation in a dry, indoor location. Operating conditions: 0 C - 40 C; 10-90% relative humidity, non-condensing. Warning: The AC socket outlet shall be installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible. Warning: This equipment relies on building installation primary overcurrent protection. Warning: Except for the IEC chassis plug marked for AC input, all ports on the Pathport VIA are intended for low voltage data lines only. Attaching anything other than low voltage sources to the data ports may result in severe equipment damage, and personal injury or death. 3

Power-over-Ethernet Allocation The IEEE 802.3af standard Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) provides a method for operating power to be supplied over the same cable as data. Devices that operate on PoE are classified according to power consumption. Generally speaking, Class 1 devices consume up to 5W, Class 2 up to 10W and Class 3 consume up to 15W. There is also a Class 0, which is a device that cannot report its power consumption, so it is considered equivalent to Class 3. The Max PoE Allocation feature allows the user to determine the maximum PoE that will be made available on a given port. Since, by default, the VIA powers up each port sequentially, starting with Port 1, it s possible to exhaust the on-board PoE supply of 60W before all ports are powered. This feature allows the user to ensure critical equipment will be guaranteed power by the management processor. VLAN Support and Configuration Overview A VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) is a group of ports on the switch (or switches) that are configured to pass traffic to one another, but not to ports on any other VLAN. When multiple VLANs are established, some ports on the switch may need to be configured specifically to pass all VLAN traffic, to ensure overall traffic is routed correctly. This feature allows the user to arrange lighting consoles, nodes and other network gear into groups of equipment. The usual purpose is to minimize unnecessary traffic to the equipment, or to segregate equipment so that the network does not get flooded with redundant data. VLAN capability is available with VIA 10+1 firmware of and higher. Upgrading to this firmware takes 60 to 120 seconds. Definitions VLAN naming practices are very confusing. The following terms are paired interchangeably in this manual: Normal and Untagged; Uplink and Tagged. Normal/Untagged ports belong to a specific VLAN as configured by the user, and will only pass traffic that belongs to that VLAN. Uplink/Tagged ports pass all network traffic with VLAN tags within the VLAN range established for that switch (see Range Configuration below). Tag refers to the marker added to (or removed from) the data packet as it enters or exits from a Normal/Untagged port on the switch. The Tag determines which VLAN the data packet is assigned to. Management VLAN refers to the VLAN the switch s management processor is assigned to. Care must be taken that the Management VLAN is used by at least one Normal/Untagged port on the switch, or the ability to configure the switch may be lost. It 7
is strongly recommended that the Management VLAN be identical to the VLAN Range Start. VLAN VID# is assigned to Normal/Untagged ports and determines which VLAN that port operates within. Currently, the VIA 10+1 only supports static, port-based VLANs. A Normal/Untagged port may only be associated with one VLAN VID# at a given time. Front Panel Configuration Plan the VLAN layout first. The creation of a map of the network, showing which devices to associate with which VLAN, is strongly recommended prior to configuration. VLAN Enable From the default front panel screen (which shows the switch name, IP and PoE usage), press the encoder knob. The Base Configuration Screen will be shown. Base Configuration IP Address: x.x.x.x Subnet Mask: x.x.x.x Turn the knob to the right to scroll down until the VLAN support setting is shown. Base Configuration Gateway: VLAN Support: Disabled Serial #: PPxxxxxx With the line highlighted, press the encoder knob. Choose Enabled, then press the knob to accept the change. The Base Configuration screen will have changed, with the following new options now visible: Base Configuration VLAN Range Start: 1 VLAN Range End: 64 Management VLAN: 1 VLAN Range Settings The VLAN range is used by Uplink/Tagged ports to determine which range of VLANs the port will forward. Only data packets with VLAN tags that fall within the VLAN Range will be forwarded by Uplink/Tagged ports To change the VLAN Range Start, highlight the line on the screen and press the encoder knob. Scroll up or down the list to the value desired. Press the encoder knob to accept. 8
To change the VLAN Range End, highlight the line on the screen and press the encoder knob. Scroll up or down the list to the value desired. Press the encoder knob to accept. A range of up to 4096 VLANs is allowed. Setting the Range End value to slightly more than the number of VLANs required is recommended. Management VLAN The switch has a management processor, which must be assigned a VLAN when the VLAN feature is enabled. It is strongly recommended that the Management VLAN be set to the same value as the VLAN Range Start number. To change the Management VLAN, highlight the Management VLAN line on the screen and press the encoder knob. Scroll up or down the list to the value desired. Press the encoder knob to accept. Only VLAN ID#s within the VLAN range used by that switch will be available as options. Port Configuration Once VLAN is enabled and the parameters set, the individual ports need to be configured. By default, all ports will be configured to the same VLAN, typically with the VID# of the VLAN Range Start. To configure a port, start from the top level screen and turn the encoder knob to reach the port you wish to configure. The LCD should look similar to this: Port 1 Port 1: 100Mbit Full Duplex PoE: Class 1 1.3/15.4W Push the encoder knob to enter the port configuration menu. Turn the knob right to scroll down to the VLAN options. Port 1 Configuration VLAN: Untagged (Normal) VLAN ID: 1 <Back> By default, a port is shown as Normal/Untagged, and is joined to the VLAN shown on the VLAN ID line. The next step depends on whether the port is connected to an end device, such as a node or console, or if the port is connected to another switch. If the port is connected to an end device, leave the port as Normal/Untagged. Highlight the VLAN ID line and press the encoder knob. Rotate the knob to select the VLAN required for this particular device. Press the knob to accept the selection. Only VLANs within the VLAN range will be shown as options. 9
If the port is connected to another switch, the port may be configured as a Normal/Untagged port set to a specific VLAN. In this case, only the traffic tagged for that specific VLAN will be forwarded from this port onto the next switch. If traffic from more than one VLAN must be forwarded to the next switch, then the port should be reconfigured to be Uplink/Tagged. To change the port type, highlight the VLAN: Untagged (Normal) line (in the example above) and press the encoder. Rotate the encoder to select Tagged (Uplink) and press the encoder to accept. The screen will return to the previous display, but the VLAN ID option will no longer be available. Software Configuration VLANs may be configured from builds of Pathport Manager software that support this feature. Refer to the Pathport Manager documentation for configuration instructions. VLAN Guidelines Generally speaking, ports connected to end devices will be configured as Normal/Untagged and given a VLAN ID#. Ports connected to other VIA switches will either by set as Normal/Untagged, if only a specific VLAN needs to be communicated between the VIAs, or will be set as Uplink/Tagged if multiple VLANs must be forwarded between switches, or if a VLAN must be forwarded through an intermediate switch (where it is not used) on to a third switch beyond. It is strongly recommended that ports used to connect switches should be set to matching configurations. Firmware Upgrades Firmware upgrades may only be done using Pathport Manager software, available on the Pathway website: 10
