1 CHAPTER 1 Cajun P220FE Switch Software Release Notes Software Version 1.2 (November 12, 1998) Document # P220FE Overview The Cajun P220FE switch is a stand-alone switch that consists of the following elements: Fixed CPU/Supervisor Card This card is an intelligent controller containing the system software, an RS-232 console port, a 10Base-T management port, and a Gigabit Ethernet switch port (either a 1000Base-SX or 1000Base-LX). 24-port 10/100Base-TX Fixed Media Card This media card contains 24 Ethernet ports and the switch fabric chips. It is permanently installed in the enclosure. Option Expansion Module Optional expansion modules may be installed into the enclosure and have access to the switch fabric. NOTE: The optional expansion modules are not hot-swappable. The switch must be powered off before you install or remove these optional modules. The optional expansion modules are: - Single-port 1000Base-SX module - Single-port 1000Base-SLX module - Single-port 1000Base-LX module - 4-port 10/100Base-TX module - 2-port 100Base-FX module Optional Redundant Power System

2 Cajun P220FE Switch Software Release Notes 2 P220FE Features VLAN features: - VLANs allow you to segment traffic into a flat switched network that helps prevent traffic from being forwarded to stations where it is not needed. - VLANs have the ability to ignore physical switch locations when creating workgroups. Hunt Groups (also known as link aggregation) aggregate bandwidth from multiple ports so they act as one high-bandwidth switch port. Spanning Tree features: - Spanning tree allows smaller spanning tree domains that results in much faster convergence during spanning tree reconfiguration. - Per-VLAN operation allows you to use more available bandwidth when you have redundant links. Configuration Archival and Retrieval You can save your configuration information to a TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) server. The configuration information is saved as a single binary file. NOTE: Most UNIX implementations of the TFTP server require that the file exist on the server for the transfer to proceed. Therefore, you must create the file before transferring to the TFTP server. The P220FE has the ability to add and delete static routes. This features enables redundant network routes for management of the Cajun switch agent. Per-VLAN Spanning Tree The Spanning Tree default is now PER-VLAN. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) trap support for the following traps: - Cold start - Link up/down - Authentication - Lucent enterprise specific traps - Bridge MIB enterprise traps Capability to initialize user login database. Supports the bridge MIB. Supports enabling or disabling load sharing for hunt groups.

Resource events for virtual switch ports in hunt groups. Known Issues Notes on Configuring Virtual LANs (VLANs) Be aware of the following issues when configuring VLANs: To support the full 1024 VLANs, the hash table size must be decreased to 16. A maximum of 60 VLANs are possible with the default hash table size set to the default of To access the hash table pop-up menu, select Create VLAN. The switch powers up very slowly when large numbers of VLANs (more than 500) are configured. This problem will be addressed in an upcoming software release. If you set a port s VLAN trunking mode to Clear, make sure you do not change the default value of the VLAN Binding Type. The default value: is Static. If you are using both the VLAN autolearning feature and the Binding Type Bind to Received, make sure that you set the binding type before you set Autolearn to Enable. You should not assign more than one VLAN to a 3Com mapping table. Gigabit Ports Do Not Perform Autonegotiation Cajun Gigabit Ethernet ports operate at 1 Gbps, full-duplex and have been widely tested for interoperability with other devices. Currently, these ports do not support autonegotiation. If you connect a Cajun gigabit port to a device that supports autonegotiation, you must disable autonegotiation on the non-cajun device to ensure proper operation. Hunt Groups Load Sharing Hunt groups do not load share if the source and destination traffic and the hunt group ports are on the same fabric port. For example, if you have a 24-port media module, the first 12 ports are associated with one fabric port and the remaining 12 ports are associated with the other fabric port. Consequently, to configure a hunt group on this module, ensure that the hunt group ports are not located on the same 12 ports of the module where the source traffic occurs. Loop Back Errors Loop back errors may be seen if there are hunt group flood ports on the first port of the switch port. For example: 2.1, 3.1, 4.1. SMACII and Port Utilization Errors SMACII and port utilization errors may be generated under certain traffic conditions.

5 Cajun P220FE Switch Software Release Notes 5 Functional Restrictions The switch supports seven concurrent inbound Telnet sessions. If you attempt to create an eighth concurrent inbound Telnet session, an error occurs. The optional expansion modules are not hot-swappable. The switch must be powered off before you install or remove these optional modules. All ports in a hunt group must be the same speed. Currently, software does not enforce this rule. For example, you may have a situation where ports in a hunt group intended to consist only of 100 Mbps ports autonegotiate to run at 10 Mbps, causing the hunt group to not function as expected. Loopback tests on ports may fail when there is traffic present on the link at startup. The circumstances to create this scenario are rare. The P220FE cannot ping its own IP address. The P220FE Agent does not respond to pings that are larger than the maximum Ethernet frame size. Switch port event log entries are identified by internal fabric port and subport identifiers. In the future, they will be identified by physical slot and port. When downloading code from a DOS-based Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server, use standard 8.3 file naming conventions (the default download filenames do not use this convention). The TFTP timeout for the Cajun P220FE Agent is 30 seconds. If you have problems downloading an image, decrease the timeout limit for the TFTP server from which you are attempting to download an image. It takes a few seconds before the Status button on the TFTP Download screen returns accurate information.

6 Cajun P220FE Switch Software Release Notes 6 When the Spanning Tree mode is set to IEEE 802.1D, Bridge Protocol Data Units (BPDUs) are sent out ports in Clear (non-trunked) format even if the port has a trunking format (that is, 3Com, 802.1Q, or Dual-Layer) defined. For ports that have a 3Com trunking format, the receiving end of the trunked port attempts to interpret the clear BPDUs as trunked packets. Consequently, these BPDUs are discarded at the receiving end. In order for Spanning Tree to function properly with 3Com trunked ports, the Spanning Tree mode should be set to per-vlan. In per-vlan Spanning Tree, there is one instance of Spanning Tree for each VLAN and the BPDUs are tagged with the VLAN ID, ensuring they are interpreted correctly on the receiving end. NOTE: Although this restriction does not apply to ports that use 802.1Q or Multi-Layer trunking modes, it is still recommended that you set Spanning Tree to per-vlan when using trunked ports. This prevents an entire link from being blocked when there is a loop in one VLAN. Spanning Tree now defaults to Per-VLAN mode. The current Spanning Tree state is retained. No action is required for an update.
