About this research note: Product Evaluation notes provide an analysis of the market position of a specific product and its vendor through an in-depth exploration of their relative capabilities. VMware vsphere: Taking Virtualization to the Next Level Publish Date: October 6, 2009 The latest iteration of VMware s flagship virtualization product takes server virtualization to the next level - 100% virtualization in a private cloud. However, IT decision makers will have to evaluate whether the next level is worth the price, especially against emerging good enough alternatives from Microsoft and Citrix Info-Tech Research Group

Executive Summary There is no doubt that VMware s vsphere further pushes the envelope toward 100% infrastructure virtualization. However, the competition has also been developing their products and has done so at lower price points. This evaluation looks at the following:» Market overview: toward 100 percent virtualization. Virtualization has been a key enabler of converged utility infrastructures. Though server virtualization has been a strong trend in recent years, there have been limits to how much infrastructure can be virtualized. vsphere aims to break through those limits.» Key new features/improvements. VMware is seeking to elevate vsphere to the level of cloud operating system with features such as: Improvements in VM Size and system resources, Fault Tolerance, Thin Provisioning of Virtual Hard Drives, VMware Data Recovery with Deduplication, and VMware Distributed Switch (vds).» Pricing options and versions. As impressive as vsphere s features are, it is important to note that VMware remains an expensive option. To get it all requires a $3,500 per processor Enterprise Plus license ($7,000 per dual processor server). There is, however, a lower cost package for small infrastructures called Essentials. vsphere is billed as the operating system of both the data center and the cloud. Its feature set and improvements certainly position VMware to play this role in converged utility infrastructures. However, the price will be steep against alternatives that offer many similar features for free. Product Evaluation 2

Market Overview Server virtualization continues to be a hot trend as enterprises of all sizes seek to consolidate server workloads. VMware has been the most obvious beneficiary of this trend and continues to be market leader in x86/x64 server virtualization. With vsphere 4.0, VMware seeks to take virtualization beyond server consolidation to being the common abstraction layer for managing a utility infrastructure. The most immediate benefit of virtualization is mitigation of capital expense and hardware maintenance through server consolidation. These tactical benefits are the most tangible for a virtualization business case. (See Figure 1) Figure 1. Business Case Value for Server Virtualization Source: Info-Tech Impact Research Report: The Business Case in Virtualization. Beyond consolidation, enterprises are finding that a virtual infrastructure is more agile, scalable, and resilient. This is manifest in areas such as disaster recovery and business continuity planning as well as faster more efficient provisioning of application workloads (Items 3 and 4 above). Increasingly Info-Tech is seeing these benefits driving longer term virtualization planning and a move toward a virtualize first approach to server refresh (Refer to the ITA Premium SE research note, Virtual Server Planning: Use a Balanced Approach ). However, unlike the more immediate tactical benefits of server consolidation, the more strategic benefits are dependant on how much of the total infrastructure is virtualized. Product Evaluation 3

Standing in the way of 100% virtual infrastructure have been technical hurdles. Some workloads are too demanding for virtual environments due to limitations in virtualization software and the underlying physical server and network infrastructures (Refre to the ITA Premium SE research note, Avoid the Top Five Pitfalls of Virtualization ). A fully virtual infrastructure also requires not only virtual server management but also management of network and storage resources. vsphere 4.0 aims to bring VMware s flagship virtualization software the last mile to being a full utility infrastructure operating system. These enhancements, along with developments in server hardware and networking, are making 100% virtualized infrastructure a real possibility. Product Highlights vsphere 4.0 is the successor to VMware s Virtual Infrastructure 3 which included both a hypervisored VM hosting server (ESX, ESXi) and a management layer (vcenter). VMware has a confusing (some say annoying) tendency to rename its products with each major release (refer to the sidebar vsphere: What s in a name? below). The package includes a number of new features plus a range of small new features, tweaks, and updates. For its cloud operating system positioning, VMware maps the capabilities of vsphere into two broad categories application services and infrastructure services. Generally, the infrastructure services focus on hardware virtualization servers, storage, and networks while the application services layer focuses on operational features such as security and dynamic provisioning of applications (Figure 2). Figure 2. VMware s Mapping of Features to Virtual Services Source: VMware Product Evaluation 4

Below we will look at five key areas of product advancement: Improvements in VM size and system resources, fault tolerance, thin provisioning of virtual hard drives, VMware data recovery with deduplication, and vsphere: What s In a Name? VMware distributed switch (vds). 1. Improvements in VM Size and system resources. Memory and network bottlenecks have been two key limiting factors for virtual machines. These can make virtualization unsuitable for certain high capacity application workloads. In vsphere 4.0 a single VM can now address up 255GB of RAM (previously the limit was 64GB). A VM can also be provisioned with up to 8 virtual CPUs or vcpus. This is double what was possible with VI3. There is also support for 10 Gigabyte Ethernet. More vcpus, memory, and network bandwidth equal higher performance for high utilization application workloads. vsphere also has the capability of hot adding vcpus and memory to a VM without rebooting. Note, however, that the operating system running on the VM must also support hot adding (for example, only the 64-bit version of Windows Server Datacenter Edition has this capability). 2. Fault Tolerance. It is called vsphere 4.0 though there never was a vsphere 1.0 through 3.0. For clarity s sake, know that vsphere is the latest edition of VMware s flagship server virtualization and management software. The product history includes: 1. Separate VMware ESX Server 2.0 (hypervisor) and Virtual Center (Management) products. 2. Virtual Infrastructure 3 (or VI3) which included ESX 3.0 and Virtual Center. 3. Virtual Infrastructure 3i (VI3i) with ESXi and vcenter (former Virtual Center). 4. vsphere 4.0 (includes ESX 4 and vcenter 4). In Fault Tolerance two identical VMs are run as a cluster on two separate physical host servers. If one of the two physical nodes goes down the application continues to run. As with VMware s high availability (HA) and vmotion, the two VMs share a common virtual hard drive on a SAN array with VMware s cluster file system VMFS.» In HA a second VM is automatically started on a second physical host node (server).» In vmotion a clone of a running VM is started on a second node and the two briefly synchronized before the original VM is shut down (creating the sense that the VM had nondisruptively moved from one node to the other).» In Fault Tolerance a second clone VM is started on the second node and synchronized however, unlike vmotion the synchronization is not temporary. The two VMs remain permanently available and synchronized. Product Evaluation 5

For most applications HA is likely adequate to meet availability objectives. Fault Tolerance is aimed at mission critical applications with very high availability requirements (zero downtime, zero data loss). It is worth noting that the criticality of these workloads may lead administrators to wait for fault tolerance to prove itself in the field (and perhaps move to versioin 2.0) before they use it. 3. Thin provisioning of virtual hard drives A virtual hard drive for a virtual machine is essentially a file. In the past the virtual hard drive file was the same size as the hard drive it represented. A VM that required a 20 Gigabyte hard drive would therefore require a 20 gigabyte file. With thin provisioning that file only need be the size of the actual data stored on the virtual hard drive. For example, a VM with a 20 Gigabyte drive but only 2 Gigabytes of data stored on that file will require only a 2 Gigabyte virtual hard drive file. Storage vmotion, VMware s feature for moving a virtual hard drive from one physical storage platform to another, has been enhanced with conversion features for thin provisioning. A thick disk for a VM can be converted to a thin provisioned disk during the move. 4. VMware data recovery with deduplication VMware Data Recovery (vdr) is an integrated appliance for virtual servers. Backup schemes for virtual machine environments traditionally use VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) which has now been renamed vstorage API for Data Protection. In spite of its name, VCB is not a backup application but rather set of utilities for creating snapshots of SAN-based VM volumes and mounting them for backup by third party backup software. vdr uses VCB which has also been updated with new features such as support for incremental snapshots. Data Recovery runs on a virtual machine as a virtual appliance and is managed via vcenter, providing agentless disk-based backup of VMs. On the all important recovery side, the appliance can do both full virtual disk recovery and individual file recovery. It also employs data deduplication for more efficient disk utilization. Deduplication removes redundant data blocks to reduce the amount of disk required for storing backups. In the case of virtual machines, each virtual machine hard drive will likely have significant data redundancy as each could well contain the exact same operating system files. One limitation of vdr is that it is aimed at primary operation VM backup and recovery. It does not support longer term backup features such as backup to tape or backup to another location. This is primary-layer disk to disk backup only. Product Evaluation 6

5. VMware Distributed Switch (vds) vds represents a significant step forward in the management of networking across virtual infrastructures. Previously each VMware host server did its own switching for all its VMs. In vsphere switch management for all host nodes is managed via vcenter. This streamlines network management especially for larger implementations. For example, a network administrator no longer needs to configure/modify ports on each server separately. Other benefits of vds include:» The ability of network configuration characteristics of a VM to follow that VM if it is moved from one physical host to another with Vmotion.» The ability to create trusted zones (vshield Zones) for better security. Again the zones are maintained even if the VMs get moved around to different physical machines.» Support for third party virtual switch appliances. The first of these is the Cisco Nexus 1000V. The Nexus uses the same APIs as the vds but adds the additional features of the NX-OS switch software which runs on a virtual appliance. Pricing and Packaging for VMware vsphere 4.0 As impressive as vsphere s new and improved features are, data center decision makers will have to contend with the fact that VMware remains an expensive option. To get it all requires a $3,500 per processor Enterprise Plus license ($7,000 per dual processor server). This represents a significant premium on top of the capital costs of the server hardware. Not every enterprise, however, will want all the bells and whistles of vsphere 4.0. VMware has a graduated pricing structure for various tiers of functionality. There is also an option, VMware Essentials, for smaller enterprises with more limited physical infrastructure requirements (three physical servers). Essentials and Essentials Plus Small enterprises have proven to be a big market for VMware products. The Essentials bundles are an attempt to provide a low cost entry point into VMware s management stack for enterprises (and branch offices) that have a relatively small server infrastructure (for example approximately 20 virtual servers running on three physical servers.) For basic consolidation, 20 workloads can be hosted on three servers for free with VMware s ESXi hypervisor or its Virtual Server product. Essentials, at $166 per CPU, provides vcenter to managed this virtual infrastructure. Essentials Plus at $499 per CPU adds High Availability and the Data Recovery snapshot/backup functionality (See Table 1). Product Evaluation 7

Table 1: VMware Essentials Pricing Source: VMware Includes: Price: Essentials» 3 licenses of VMware ESXi and VMware ESX (deployment-time choice)» VMFS (Virtual Machine File System)» 4-way Virtual SMP» VMware vcenter Server Agent» VMware vstorage APIs / VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB)» VMware Update Manager» VMware vcenter Server for Essentials $166 per CPU ($995 across three dual CPU servers) Essentials Plus» Everything in Essentials plus:» VMware High Availability (HA)» VMware Data Recovery $499 per CPU ($2,995 across three dual CPU servers) Note the Essentials bundle does not include VMotion for live migration, a feature provided free by rival Citrix in XenServer 5.5. However, Citrix does not provide high availability for free. For that the $1,500 per server Essentials for XenServer is required. VMware and Citrix are at odds as to which feature HA or Live Migration is the must-have for smaller enterprises. Enterprise Licensing Licensing and bundling for midsize and large enterprises is also tiered, ranging from a basic Standard version for $795 per CPU, up to the Enterprise Plus version for $3,495 per CPU (Table 2). 10 VMotion, Fault Tolerance, and Data Recovery all become available at the Advanced licensing level. Storage vmotion and Dynamic Resource Scheduling are available with Enterprise. For the Distributed Switch as well as Host Profiles (a method of centrally managing the configuration of all ESX servers), the Enterprise Plus level is required. Note also that hardware hosts with more than 256 GB of memory and processors with more than six cores require Enterprise Plus. This means that leading edge server platforms will require the Enterprise Plus licensing. Key Takeaways 1. The most features for managing a virtualized utility infrastructure. For enterprises that are strategically focused on moving toward a 100 percent virtualized utility infrastructure for application provisioning (sometimes called a private or internal cloud) vsphere has a comprehensive set of enabling technologies. VMware has been a virtualization leader and continues to push the envelope in terms of product capabilities. 2. Consider lower cost alternatives depending on need. Certainly not all enterprises are driving toward full virtualization in the near term. For basic server consolidation, free alternatives exist from a variety of vendors (Citrix XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V, Oracle) as well as from VMware (ESXi, Virtual Server). As well, for managing virtual infrastructures, lower cost alternatives with many (though not all) competing features exist. For example XenServer 5.5, has a range of features, including live migration, and is free. XenServer Essentials has additional competing features at a lower license cost than VMware. 3. For small enterprises, focus on management. Smaller enterprises and branch operations considering Essentials and Essentials Plus can achieve basic sever consolidation with free alternatives. Consideration of whether vsphere is worth it should focus on the value of the advanced management features across all virtualized servers, particularly high availability and data recovery in the Plus package. Bottom Line The latest iteration of VMware s flagship virtualization product takes server virtualization to the next level - 100% virtualization in a private cloud. However, IT decision makers will have to evaluate whether the next level is worth the price, especially against emerging good enough alternatives from Microsoft and Citrix. Product Evaluation 10
